That's why kids are bad LOL

You fell into the trap set up by society to say that you must have kids! - don't belive a word of it, kids mean your life as a free individual are over! permanently!!!  Don't listen to stories of how kids bring joy to your life - its propoganda made up by women to trick you into having kids!!! :)

Say goodbye to your life, you will never be able to do what you want when you want EVER A..G..A..I..N!  (or at least until your too old to be bothered to actually do anything fun)

muhahaha :P

Jking BTW - congrats :)

AoC - is there any limit to the depth this genre can plummet to?

We had seamless worlds in 1997 with UO, in 2000'ish with AC, not long after with DAoC, and then the immense SWG.

Planetside with its up to 300 people in the same battle, I heard that Runescape can have 1000vs1000 (can that be true??) in the same battle. DAoC had easily several hundred in the same battle as well.

Now AoC has hit with such a huge success. What the hell is happening? How can the players accept the freedom being taken away from them? How can they accept being confined with technology more limiting than the singleplayer game Oblivion?
Battles confined to instanced battlegrounds chopped off from the world's reality? 48vs48 in each battle - slightly more than Battlefield2 and ALOT less than Joint Operations?
Heavy instancing of the main world, making it totally inconsistent, and allowing for such artifacts as people fleeing combat by switching instance? Two people being at the same spot in the world, but cannot see each other? A nightmare of inconsistency and immersion-breaking, while at the same time crippling (supposedly) important elements like PvP. Proceeding in the world by talking to an NPC, so you can be transported to one of a number of instances of the next area instead of just simply walking there?

Are the players really willingly sitting there, as the developers chip pellet after pellet away on the very foundation of Massive Multiplayer?

The mainstreamification of this genre looks more and more like a curse.

Preach it brother!

I want a seamless world.  And yeah, maybe the old mmo's had seams but they were invisible.  Well whatever, semantics.  I don't care how they achieve the magic, I just want it how it used to be.  Screw instances.  I say knock the graphics down a notch if that's what you have to do.  It's more about gameplay than graphics anyway right?

And screw classes and levels.  We don't need them.  Give us points to spend wherever we want.

Damn straight to all of the above!  Anyone who says otherwise hasn't played enough MMOs to realise it's right! or is a console junky weaned on instanced crap console gaming.

Yes, we all get it, Darkfall is "vaporware" because it's been in development for ages.

Instead of spending valuable time marketing the game and making as much media noise as possible to get people sold like countless other let-down titles in the past, perhaps they're actually more concerned with developing their ideal game. That's just my own rational stance on the matter, though.

Unfortunately for Darkfall, it's been in production for far too long. Theres no way possible for the game to live up to all the production time its been in. Look at what a dissappointment Tabula Rasa was after its 5 year production time/rewrite.

So what? Darkfall is an indie project, the more time they spend developing the game, the better it will be in the long run.

And Tabula Rasa was only hyped by ignoramuses. I never thought highly of it, even in its early stages when it wasn't even an action/FPS.

And 'Darkfall' is only hyped by delusional fanbois.  Anyone in their right mind can see that Darkfall will never happen, it's beyond belief why it's still listed on this site.  It has become a laughing stock to entire community.

All you did was name the companies of some games that you liked, not actually successful games..  Blizzard and NCsoft made quality MMOs. No questions asked.

Puhleeze!  NCSOFT?!  Lineage II ring a bell?  Complete and utter piece of trash and one of the biggest flops at that.  NCSOFT is no different from Funcom, as far as I'm concerned.

No.  I've played every mmo out there and I can safely say that Mythic and Blizzard are the best at what they do.

you must be joking, while i have tried Lineage II and decided it wasn't my style and wasn't for me, you cannot argue the fact that Lineage I & II were some of the most successful MMORPG's of their time.

Successfull yes, Quality a big NO.  Successfull does not = Quality.

I have been waiting for Warhammer for a long time.  I absolutely loved Dark Age of Camelot.  It was one of my top MMO games of all time and one of only a few that I played for longer then a few months.  When I heard that Mythic was making a new RvR game I was so stoked about it.  I have been hyped for a long time.  I really really enjoy the way they make their games.

But I wish they had made Dark Age of Camelot 2 instead.  I don't know but even though I know better I can't help but feel "WoW" while seeing the game.  Which sucks in my opinion because I just got done playing WoW and do not want to go back.  At least Dark Age of Camelot had a total different feel to it.  I wish that WAR looked more like DAoC then WoW.  Now I know why it looks like WoW.  I know all of the back story on Blizzard & Games Workshop.  And while I am not a tabletop gamer I do know that they are matching the art style of Warhammer.

I just can't help but wish that WoW had never came out.  Then I would be even more stoked about the game.  I still have the collector's edition on preorder but I just wish that they had decided to continue with their DAoC franchise instead.

I mean how awesome would it be to play a new DAoC with no ToA messups and a new engine with better animations and a better UI.  Heck DAoC with the LoTRO engine would be awesome.

Oh well I guess it is just wishful thinking.  Maybe after I get past the look of the game and experience more of the game play I will be more happy with it.  Because I do know that Mythic will get the RvR right and it will be really good.

I'm sorry, but how shallow to base all your opinion upon the graphic style of a game. I assume like me you have played AOC long enough now to have the shine removed from your eyes. Have you not noticed how little graphics matter in the end? I have. AOC is pretty, but it took me less than two days to stop noticing how pretty it was and start to notice the gameplay, and not in a good way.

People have been saying Gameplay > Graphics for years, and I agreed intellectually if not in practice, but now I AGREE completely. Gamplay is EVERYTHING. It is where the fun comes from, it is where the re-playability factor comes from. A game with great gameplay and ok graphics will run and run, where one with the opposite is not going to get the chance to get beyond a jog.

Exactly been saying that for years to people, and many AoC folks, maybe through lack of gaming experience, just don't get it.

Graphics last a week, Gameplay lasts forever.

As the big swingometer starts to move away from the Elf and goblin side towards the sci-fi / futuristic side of the MMO trend I think we will see something very similar to a 'Planetside 2'

I think we are entering a period of sci-fi / alternative MMOs very shortly and a Planetside 2 or similar will be on the cards eventually.

Exactly right, there will be a natural convergence of the technologies as we are starting to see with cross-over gaming titles.

In the end practicality will mean that consoles just can't be produced fast enough to keep up with the latest gaming technology unless the next generation will be able to be upgraded with new hardware, in which case with the price of a decent PC system becoming proportionally cheaper each year it will not be worth the money to invest in a console, when a PC system of similar cost can do so much more and be upgraded with 3rd party hardware whenever its required.

The next generation of Consoles (IF they are ever even released) will be the last, instead we will see a new generation of Hybrid PCs  designed from the ground up for gaming and for gamers with no computer knowledge.  i.e. running a cut down version of windows gaming* (similar to what an Xbox is now but with a great step toward the hardware and specs of a PC)

6. Ready for market? Eh, arguable. There's definately some things that should have been fixed (traders, anyone?) by release. BUT, I understand why companies do this. You can't blame the developers. You ahve to blame te financial backers. The people who paid money to build this game want to see their efforts rewarded, and they could NOT have been happy with the many, many delays AoC had in launching. So they pressured Funcom to release a product faster than perhaps advisable. At least FC isn't sitting here doing nothing. Some serious problems (traders, Lachesis plains freezing) have been fixed already. We can only hope there's more to come.

Anyway, what I'm saying here is yes, AoC is NOT a finished game. But by definition, no MMO really can be finished. Now, it's also not a perfect game...but I doubt any really ARE perfect, either. I think this one started decently and will continue to improve though, in time.

You forgot a lot of stuffs. Let's just forget about what was promised. Just focus on what are in the game.

- Character stats have no meaning. I am trying not to use the word broken. Although Funcom admitted on the official board that it's "something need checking". By this, I don't mean just a stat is bugged. The majority of character main stats (str, dex, int, wis, ...) across all classes currently contribute nothing to your character. You do realize that AoC is still being advertised as an RPG right? Character stats is a foundation of any modern RPG. If this is broken, you can throw everything else out of the window. Everything they do to adjust balance now will have to be done again once this is fixed.

- The above leads to item system also have no meaning. A sword with +str is just as good as a white sword store bought. This, in addition to the generic looking of equipment right now, killed all incentive to get new items. While someone could argue that AoC is trying to focus on "skill" instead of "item", in an RPG, "item" still play a big part in character development.

- Crafting is very buggy and not working for the most part. A lot of factors contribute to this one. Trainer NPC not available in player city, broken recipes, bugged harvesting, and oh, this one is good, un-rewarding craft results. Player city is also incomplete. You cannot level up your city therefore keep siege is impossible.

- Many feats do not work, as in do nothing. This is across the board, found on all classes, not just one particular class. This is another foundation feature of an RPG. If this have problem, everything they do now to adjust the balance will be out of whack after this is fixed. Like character stats, this is one of the core elements of the game that should be functioned when the game is released. Bugged, as in sometimes it does not work right, is ok. But flat out not functioning is not.

- Many skills also does not function like they are intended to. Most regen skills fall into this category.

- Lacking of contents, although Funcom already admitted this but let's look at it again. The amount of quests in low level zone is not enough. Yes, low level. Now, a lot of people might jump right on this but let's calmly look at the situation. From level 20 to level 40, you cannot just stay in your race area, there is simply not enough quest to do, you are forced to move to other race areas to do green or lower level quests if you don't want to grind. This will kill the re-playability because if you level one character pass 40, you basically have seen pretty much everything and do most quests in all 3 races area. After 40, the amount of contents drop sharply from where it was. After 50, the amount of contents drop exponentially.

- Bugged contents, there are many bug quests especially above level 40. There are many dungeon/instances that allow you to do the wrong things (allow you to go into area that you not suppose to go until a certain trigger, allow you to kill some key quests mobs before you can get the quest....) just to realize at the end of the dungeon that you just simply cannot proceed anymore and the whole time you invested in the dungeon was just wasted. These are logical flaws in addition to many many technical flaws like mobs disappearing ...

- Chat, communication system is very bad, very hard to use.

- Guild system is primitive, in complete. Why put the guild roster and the friend list together?

The list could go on. Mind you, most of these issues have been found in beta, Funcom knew about this, yet decided to do nothing. Contents were withhold from closed beta testers and basically, contents pass level 40 were largely untested, hence a lot of bugs pop up in release.

You can like the game, I know I do, but honestly, you think this is ready for market? Either you just too easy to please or you just plain ignorant about the state of the game.

PS: Oh, I forgot to mention, the closed beta NDA still exist. It has never been lifted.

i like how heaps of people are not even attempting to counter this guy's voluminous post.

the FC viral marketing team are hard at work today...

Counter it? How do you counter an OPINION that is "right" as far as the poster is concerned?

That's about all there is on this board. A bunch of subjective opinions. There aren't too many facts to be seen.

I rarely drop by here anymore... having too much fun in the game! Why get into a battle of wits with those who are only half prepared? (Some of them, anyway.)

In that case his post must be the FIRST post EVER in the history of online discussion not to have his OPINION countered by someone elses OPINION.

i.e. You have virtually just admitted that his post is factually accurate and therefore you have NO argument or counter to produce without sounding like a liar.

Therefore AoC should not of been released and will lose subscribers over time until they fix it.

Come back in 6 months and tell us how great the game is, by then the fanboism will have worn off, the haters will have moved on.

Only time tells how successful an MMO is, not the first few weeks experienced players know this even if the fanbois don't.  AoC isn't going to be a long term success story, but will tick over for a few years.

Population is way up, had some great fights over the last week.

At a guess I would say pops feel like they did about a year and a half to 2 years ago, hopefully it will last for a while :)

Also there are more people in the caves than I have ever seen in years.

The easiest way to avoid them is to stay out of the Darkfall forums.

The reason for this is naturally the sheer amount of people who is playing the game right now, and while we staffed up significantly for the Conan launch it wasn't enough for what we are now facing. We are actively staffing up as fast as we can in order to reduce the waiting times, and get back to our standard of being among the best, which is always our goal.

Check out the whole Q&A here.

No! its not the "sheer amount of people" that are cause customer service issues, (other games have high populations and deliver fine), its the sheer amount of friggin problems and bugs THAT is why their customer service is being overwhelmed.

So that time of year has come round again, when all the fanbois get round the campfire and sing songs of the great darkfall and how it will release this year.

They should really make this an annual holiday or something, or more correctly a religious holiday?  Every time they announce the release of this game (lol) , there seems to be less and less fanbois singing its praises.

Maybe in time the children of the fanbois will take up the torch and their children after them and so on.  The darkfall legacy will live on no doubt when all of us are dead and buried and still they will come together each year and claim that, YES!, darkfall is coming out THIS year and the rest of the world is wrong.

So a thousand years from now, when the Earth is a global greenhouse of dust, the last man standing  may lay dying, and holding in his hand  a  scribbled note  with the words, "darkfall is coming....soon!"

it's actually more like "quarterly"... or at least twice a year.  Normally Quarterly.

There's the first one when they release that yearly vid in like Jan/Feb.
it sparks up again around spring time while the kids are on spring break and don't do anything but surf the net and a new round of fanboi's roll in.
Again during summer.

And finally my favorite:
During the fall, every year, "inside information because our guild has a Dev on it" about Beta starting.  Normally like Novemberish. (a story I've heard the past 2-3 years)

Randomly insert the ongoing war of "DFO VS *insert game releasing*" posts about twice a year being the hot topic.

After all these phases, there's a calm portion where the fans go their way to erect new shrines, and the trolls are bored and go their way to play a game.
