"Forcing?" Says who? People will either want the bonuses, and thus join a guild, or they won't, and then they won't. It's that simple. City building, like guild participation, seems completely voluntary and optional.

Personally, I'm going to actively campaign for a guild, the purpose of which is to make an enclave, but that's just me. With luck, I can find 24 like-minded people out of the 100,000 or so out there ready to play the game...

I gotta say that for me, it starts to take off after level 20. I've had a lot more fun with the 20+ content than I did with the early stuff; the Train missions are a blast, the AVs and personalities are great, and the linked mission sets in Striga and Croatoa are extremely cool. Better temp powers, better PvP, CAPES, and really, for the new players, it's a chance to respec, pick up the needed powers that you skipped, and power on through to the really cool mid-list power. My TA/A Defender is level 26, and he JUST NOW got cool with his oil slick that he can set on fire, Endurance reducing powers, and in two more levels, his sniper attack. What's not to love?

My other character is 34th level and his adventures are even cooler. The new zones and new maps just blow the Hollows and Perez Park away. I've also written a number of binds for this character so that he's more "animated" and "super-heroic" when he fights.

In the end, the game is what you make of it. I wanted something that simulates comic book super heroes. This game does that better than anything else out there. If you're a casual gamer, or prefer fantasy games, then I'd suggest going elsewhere. But for playing super heroes, nothing else scratches the itch like CoH.

I think in the end, this will be another level of customization that the players always seem to want. New enhancements for powers (MY dark dark scrapper is now different than YOUR dark dark scrapper), new costume pieces, and temp powers to either keep or sell (thus making the at-home-cyber merchants giddy, and also satisfying my need for a jet pack), have me really anxious to see more.

Personally, there's nothing more super hero-ish than inventions. Spidey's webshooters. Reed Richard's Ultimate Nullifier. Tony Stark's armor. Batman's utility belt. The list goes on and on.

People are weird. Gamers freaking out over new powers has to be a first.

As a relative newcomer to MMORPGs (I play CoX), I have seen a number of female gamers active online, in chat, and on the CoX message boards. I think it's great, and long-overdue. While I can't say that the article broke new ground or anything, I'm still always a little stunned when I find out that the female character is actually run by a female player. This is mainly from gaming in the 80's, when women-gamers were scarcer than hen's teeth. So, from an "old dude" point of view, it's surprising in a cool way that there are exponentially more women-gamers out there.

This review and subsequent discussion has been interesting. I'm actually new to the game, but I'm coming from a different angle. I'm no stranger to Mmorpgs, but I've never been interested in them prior to this because I don't like a lot of the people who are online gaming--the power levelers, the one-hit killers, and the young Leet-speakers (I'm 36). My friends all have the game (or just got the game, like me) and we decided that we'd rather play with each other, chatting through TeamSpeak, than interact with a bunch of strangers to go on missions.

That socialization part, the in-jokes, and talking out tactics and strategies before we rush the goons, has brought the old role-playing vibe back in. We're all really engaged now, even the early-adopters among us with 40th level characters. We also all logged on with a pre-set idea that we'd form a super group, and it would have a theme--and we built our characters to reflect that theme. Other players have already noticed it, and it's been a blast to run our similarly designed characters down the street.

Now, playing alone or with just one or two of my pals, I can sorta see through the veneer of the game--I mean, it's got "monster" generation, "dungeon" missions, even characters with "spells" and big, ugly "monsters." CoH really hides those elements as well as anything I've seen (CoV, a little less so, since you're dealing with more monsterous characters. I'm fighting snake-men, for cryin' out loud; I should have built a barbarian king named Kull!).

Nevertheless, like with most games, it's the group you play with that makes CoH/CoV so much fun. If you're playing with strangers, it may not be the best way to mine your own personal comics knowledge. If you're playing alone, well, that's cool, too, but it's just not going to be as much fun as when you're in a group.
