It looks like Blizzard is trying to offset PvP migration to Warhammer. |

Not unless Mythic fixes the basic mechanics by launch, specifically the UI response, movement, animation and AI pathing. WAR has some good features and can be great fun to play, but it looks and feels clunky in a way that detracts from gameplay. |

Wound or maim yes, but kill no. Long time WoW players will try WAR first and maybe go to WOTLK for a while, but later return to WAR, or even play both. There could be a mass migration of serious PvPers from WoW to WAR. The competition will be interesting to watch. We can expect a whole new round of WoW free trials, bonuses and beta updates as WAR nears release. |

1) I sometimes mistype homophones in haste, such as 'there' for 'their', because I'm thinking of the pronunciation first, not because my spelling is bad. 2) Proofreading chat or a post is often an afterthought, hence the common sight of an asterisked correction in game chat. In forums it definitely helps to use the preview function. 3) We need to distinguish between word abuse and phrase abbreviation. For example, typing 'ne' or '4' instead of 'any' or 'for' is confusing and either pseudo-hip or lazy. On the other hand, abbreviations such as 'afk', 'dot' and 'wts' are easy to recognize and save typing. 4) Chronic misuse, abuse and misspelling of English has a ripple effect. If you take time out from games and forums once in a while to read a few well-written books then we will all benefit. Buy a dictionary and challenge yourself. Rent the movie "Educating Rita" |

For me the combat system is too complicated and clumsy. A good skill-based system would be like Fable. |

Last November TCoS got a big publishing deal in Japan, "...the license deal is one of the largest closings for a single product for the territory of Japan in the history of PC games." It is extremely unlikely they could have made that deal for a poor-quality game, since it included a substantial cash advance. Several major US publishers already have their own MMO's in release or development. The competition this year and beyond is going to be intense.

Dynamic, personalized quest content is a feature of Hero's Journey. The Hero Engine has been licensed by Bioware for their MMO. Perhaps CoS is using HE? Dynamic world content sounds good, but seems to be difficult in practice. For example, the ramifications of destroying a quest destination must be handled effectively. Just the killing or distraction of a quest NPC can be a nuisance or time drain. Another commenter cited risk as a motivation, but that is only one of several for players. I'm an explorer at heart, so I want a big world in which to journey. If you can succeed at making it a changing world then that will be very interesting indeed, so I wish you luck. In any case, the adventurer in me wants something new in MMO's, beyond grinding for equipment. |

Oblivion and Fable are examples of comparable skill-based combat systems. My description of sigils was slightly inaccurate. The categories are item and skill, and item includes weapon and jewelry. Item sigils can only be installed or removed at a forge for a fee. Skill sigils are swappable out of battle. |

Sorry to say daylight01, you are wrong. Those dates are from 2007, not 2008. Development has been delayed, just like all the other major mmo's. TCOS has not announced a release date other than Q1 2008, and that is Europe, not US. |

Lord.Bachus's description of sigils is somewhat inaccurate. There are three categories of slots for sigils (which are like gems): skill, weapon and jewelry. Skill and weapon slots are associated with your *character*, not your equipment, and the number of slots increases as you level. Jewelry is the only equipment with slots, but it is not visible on your avatar. It is very interesting and exciting to note that sigils can be swapped for different stat configurations, when you are not in combat, but any sigil you use is soulbound. Let me add here that combat is entirely skill-based. There are no chance procs or dice rolls determining whether you hit or execute a spell or strike. This requires more FPS aiming skill and judgement, but it is not clear to me whether it is like the approximate aiming of Tabula Rasa.

Facts: 1) BioWare now prefers it own IP's, of which it has three, Jade Empire, Mass Effect and Dragon Age. 2) Jade Empire has no known lore development beyond the original game, and there are current MMO's with a similar theme. 3) Mass Effect is XB360 exclusive for the forseeable future, and planned to be a trilogy. 4) Dragon Age has received extensive lore development over several years. Speculation: I conclude that Bioware's MMO is Dragon Age Online. SP Dragon Age could be released in 2008 while DAO is being finished and polished for 2009/2010 launch.

Like GW, HGL doesn't have massively populated zones, apart from the hubs, but otherwise qualifies for the genre. |

It's better for PE's reputation to cancel GnH than release a turkey, but they could have handled the cancellation more gracefully. The game was a good concept, but they seemed to have chronic problems with the engine. (Maybe PE could license the GW Nightfall engine and rebuild.) In any case, the combat system was too clumsy and slow, probably to accomodate the minion system and fancy animations. Pacing is critical. |

I think Ozmodan is right on about KISS -- Keep It Simple Stupid. Playability + Fun + Stability = Success. You don't have to imitate WoW, just understand the principles, and learn from the mistakes. There is an MMO coming soon that has stated up front that they will add crafting and pvp after release, in order to get it right. They are taking the time and effort and expense to polish and stabilize the core game. Time will tell for sure, but I'll bet you they won't fail like Vanguard. Even LoTRO, with noticeable shortcomings, got the above formula right, well enough that it is quite successful. |
