This will be primarily a PC game with console versions available so all of this discussion is pretty much pointless.

It really depends on the NDA but most don't want you to discuss it in any way. That includes telling others that you were accepted. You'll want to read the NDA of the game you were accepted into to make sure but if you want to be safe just don't. Oh and by the way... Congrats!!!

Originally posted by Xrazor Your first mistake is your judging PvP by PvE games that added PvP as an afterthought by adding PvP servers. These are about the worst example of PvP that you can get as it is usually totally unrestricted PvP with no rule set and it just becomes a total gank fest. Who the hell would want to play that? A true PvP game is written with PvP at the core of the game play and the rest of the game is written to support it. They also incorporate a PvP ruleset to cut down on out and out ganking/PKing. The Lineage series is staggeringly popular and is a good example of this principal. If you want to see what true MMO PvP is like try one of the many MMOs that were produced around their PvP system. Most of these games use a FFA PvP rule set so there are no "PvP" servers... there is no need as it's a core part of the game itself.

Ah, OK... All I saw was Tasos's announcement and missed the other post. I always asume the worst when it comes to the internet so I assumed it was a scam by the way Tasos worded the announcement. I guess others did too if Brannoc felt the need to clarify what Tasos meant.

There is a post in the news section on the Darkfall site about some pre-orders being offered by another website. You can read it here. Aventurine is warning people that they didn't authorize any pre-orders. Just thought I'd give everyone a heads up.
Update: Brannoc later clarified what Tasos meant in the above announcement. You can read that here.

Well the way I see it there are four possible reasons:
I think you'll find everyone who bashes Darkfall fits neatly into one of these four categories.

I can say that playing a female, I get more free gifts, assists, and am not seen as a jerk when I do things selfishly or am insulting (as some of my characters are). It's also harder to shake off the opposite sex with a simple "no" or "go away". As a male, I'm expected to be more confident, calm and forgiving in difficult/angry situations. If there's any flirtatious gesture, "Thanks, and please don't take it personally but I'm not interested in a relationship" is more than sufficient. It's sad that our real-life gender expectations play over into the game, but I guess many people can't separate themselves from the reality they know. It's usually easy to spot a guy playing a girl character many times though. They're way too inviting and have no self-respect for their character's body/appearance. Men seem not to be able to disengage themselves from their own libido. I don't know many girls who play guys. A few do, but they don't appear to find it as enjoyable as playing someone they wish to be. These are all generalizations however, and there are exceptions to the rule surely. I also seek out the most odd-ball comination of race and class: Gnome warrior, Hulking Towering Priest, or an Elf that doesn't cry. It's funny that you mention how to spot a guy playing a girl. Most guys will pick names/looks that are dead give-a-ways. Names like Bimbolina, BettyBigOnes and the such as well as wearing the most revealing clothing the game has to offer. They are usually the first to ask guys for hand-outs also.
Usually when I play a female toon I pick a well thought out female name as I'm a roleplayer by nature. I also usually pick attractive yet functional clothing/gear for my character and not what is 'sexiest'. When I play I usually play no different from when I play male characters as in I play up the role of the character I'm playing and never ask anyone for anything other than maybe a party here and there. I also usually turn down gifts as that will just encourage them to continue. As a result of the way I play females I've actually had guys not believe me when I've told them I'm really a guy. I have actually had several guys acuse me of just saying I was a guy to get them to stop hitting on me. It can be quite amusing at times.

Yeah, a good PvP centric sandbox game is usually a roleplayers dream as the world is what you make of it. Also the open PvP atmosphere allows players to directly influence the game world to a degree that just isn't possible in a PvE game. I'm sure that the percentage of roleplayers will be higher in Darkfall than even that poll indicates. People will be roleplaying without even realizing it as they will be interacting with the game world in ways they can't even imagine at this point.

There is so much wrong with this lineage of posts. First of all, I'm neither troll nor fanboy. I really don't care if this game succeeds or fails, but I would like to point out what is wrong here. Has it occurred to any of you (who are bordering trolling) that the "community" for Darkfall is so rotten because they constantly interact with people trolling? By trolling them, you have polarized them to a point where their personalities are exaggerated.
As for the final post by Bladin. I hope you realize how much of what you said is just wrong. You seriously wouldn't play a sandbox game because of the community? I don't think you've ever played an MMO before. Just for comparison, UO and SWG (two sandbox games) had GREAT communities. SWG wasn't that great of a game, but the community was what kept the game going for a while (until SOE killed it). Now let's look at non-sandbox games. I'll take WoW as an example because it is the most successful and is a great representative of the opposing play-style. The WoW community is generally looked at as pretty childish (Barrens Chat anyone?). Now, I will admit that I'm being a bit misleading, but I think you get the point. Communities in sandbox games and non-sandbox games are actually pretty similar. There are always going to be the elitists, casual players, friendly people, gankers, etc. You claiming that sandbox games aren't worth playing because of the community just shows that you are trolling and most likely have never played a sandbox game.
Oh and one more thing... If you want to see blind rabid fanboyism at it's finest go and check out Bladin's posts in the WAR forum. They are a real hoot!

No offence but the Hype-meter here is a joke... always has been a joke.... always will be a joke. No one that has been here for a long time takes it seriously anymore as this type of thing has happened many times in the past. Believe me when I say that it's nothing to get worked up over.

He has had many names here over the years as he gets banned a lot for starting these trolling flame fests. You guys may know him as Tweedle from the Warcry forums. We have just gotten used to him and can spot him quite easily as he always uses the same old tired arguments.
The news of Beta and the new vid must have thrown him a bit though as this is the first of his alt accounts we've seen here since that time. He's changed his tune a bit as his old 'vaporware' arguments are pretty much null and void now but his style is still the same. Just ignore him completely and he will go away to regroup for a while. I didn't want to reply in this thread but I think it's gone on for long enough.
The only thing that is a huge failure in this thread is Tweedle himself as he has no life but to troll Darkfall forums. You'd think Tasos ran over his dog or something the way he hates this game for no real reason.

I play both male and female characters in games. The way I look at it is a MMO character is not an extension of myself but more like me roleplaying a completely different person. Whenever I get the urge to play myself I just go outside and do stuff in the real world. I play games to escape being myself for a little while and sometimes that includes female characters. Now I'm not one of these guys that tries to fool other guys though. If asked I will tell them I'm really a guy as I don't need any boyfriends.

EVE has more like 250k Subs and for a game from a small indy developer that is a huge success. WoW is the exception not the rule and if you try to compare every game to WoW's sub numbers than every game produced since is a huge failure. We know this isn't true. Indy developers don't need a million or more subs to be a success because they don't spend nearly as much to produce their games as a large mainstream MMO company does. Darkfall will be considered a huge success with as little as 100k-150k subs as this will allow them to show a profit within the first year. Smaller investments require smaller returns.

Yeah, Darkfall seemed like a cool idea until I found out what its community was like. Time to get back to the warrior priest, I guess. Those that you're talking about actually are a small percentage of the overall community and I agree that they give people a bad impression about what the in-game community will be like. One thing to consider though is that in a game like Darkfall if you don't like someone's attitude the solution is very simple. Kill them and strip them naked and if they come back for more... do it again. Those tough talking forum warriors will change their attitudes in a hurry once they are subjected to repeated gankings for running their mouths in game I'm sure.
As for Blizzard taking over the game...no thanks. Aventurine is only interested in making a fun PvP based game whereas Blizzard would want to turn it into a watered down version that my grandmother and my 4 year old nephew could play without getting their feelings hurt so they could reap maximum profit. Really this is nothing against Blizzard as SOE, Mythic, Turbine, Funcom as well as some other big name developers would do the same thing in todays MMO marketplace.

Ok... I understand I used a non-common word so let me define it for you guys. All 'finite' means is it's 'not infinite'. You know they are opposites. This means that people wont be able to carry every item ever made in the game all at once. Never did I even hint that inventories are going to be small by any means but by not making them infinite people will fill up and have to sell or bank eventually. As for being encumbered by carrying a lot of stuff that we just don't know. They have actually said very little about what the player weight limits will be and how they will effect your character. We just know we will be able to carry lots of stuff.
