You know I play L2 and I dont think I ever "griefed" anyone. In fact I dont think anyone I know does. Its sorta looked down on to hassel low levels. I've gotten "even" a few times but generally Im to busy trying to level and make some cash in that god aweful economy. Its a strange game.

sorry to hijack but...

Awesome sig Osyyrus!

The OP is clearly asking for something that very few people really want. I read those links to his past comments and he seems to be really mixed up. Eve would seem to fit what he is asking for. He probably burned to many bridges in that game judging from his post. Good vs Evil RPGs have nothing to do with the wholesale slaughtering of random people. Its not even worth arguing about with him.

I hear ya Greatness,

But it happens in every game. You want to see real cheating? Log onto a WoW server. They are overrun with gold farmers. Also, something no one on this site (MMORPG.com) mentions very often is the fact there are tons more private WoW servers then L2. I don't see why anyone would need to buy any gold at all in WoW as it is the easiest game ever created and there are hardly any money sinks beside a few pieces of gear.

I guess it depends on how the cheats impact you. I hate in L2 when bots are hogging a spot. On the other side, in WoW its just as bad if not worse because alot of the farmers are live and try to give you problems.

Its not the games fault, its the jags who run the the bots/farming and the jokers who buy the crap. I really don't know what a company can do to prevent it. I try not to let it bother me, as long as its no one I know or associate with what else can you do? Report them at every turn is about all.

NC Soft could help the problem by doing something about the economy. As it stands its the games greatest issue. Increasing the drops isn't going to help because all that will do is inflate the prices more. The item drop in PvP may be the only solution as the gear is over inflated to begin with. Also maybe some lower end A, B and C grade stuff at a vendor to keep things in prespective. The AFK shop feature just needs to be dumped altogether and a central market is needed. There is nothing you can do in the AFK shop that you cant do in a central market.

The OP must have his games mixed up is the only thing I can think of. I guess I could invite him to have a conversation about PvP outside the town or something

I agree with the comments on the gameplay for the most-part. This is more of an Arcade game then an RPG. The world isn't explorable and the primary "content" is in the PvP (I guess, not there yet)

However, I know this is subjective as everyone has a different experience, the community is almost as bad as WoW or GW. The primary problem (that both WoW and GW suffer from also) is there is not enough interdependance and the direct gameplay. The general chat consist mainly of people calling each other "noobs" when someone ask a question. Kill stealing of sorts and people trying to grab your loot while you still fighting another mob...I usually don't complain about this sort of thing but again its a trend in the newer games that I really don't like.

So, again, this makes it a non-keeper unfortunately in my book  The community isn't even close to the quality of games like AC, DAoC, the old SWG or L2.... But games like these promote interdependance. You don't have forced grouping in those games but it always more beneficial to have friends and group then not.

L2 you needed the community for help with the brutal economy and mutual protection, SWG you needed a community really just to have something to do because the grind was sooo basic and dull (worse then this game), and AC because monarchies where just cool to be in. DAoC because it was a pain to solo and you would never really have any fun at PvP not being in a guild.

So although you can't really fault a game for its players, this game just isn't doing it for me....

Well brihtwulf, I don't know if I am completely disappointed but I don't if its worth 15 a month either. I would probably have a warm fuzzy about it if there where at least vehicles or the PvE was a bit more imaginative or at least sci-fi like. All it is, is monster hunting like a fantasy game but with guns. (also the game is so poorly explained its not even funny).  I don't think its narrow-minded on the PvP end, its the rest that is hurting.

The potential of the Sci-Fi genre is so great but all we hardly get any games. The ones we do get are so badly made it just ticks everyone off. (SWG is a prime example of that, as you know) What do we get instead? An endless parade of mediocre fantasy games. Is it to much to ask for one decent sci-fi game in the MMO list?

I gotta say I like this better then D&DO. That was a major disappointment in my book. I mean, how can you not get D&D right? Theres like 40+ years of background and material for it and Turbine screws it up. I played PnP back in the 80s for awhile and my kids even kick it around sometimes nowadays. This game doesn't even come close to the PnP IMHO.....but thats another story. (the reason I bring this up is I tried D&DO first and I was so disappointed I tried RFO instead lol)

Well NWN2 is coming soon

edit- and more importantly Hero's Journey OR Vanguard are on the way also!

It depends what you want in a game. FFIX and WoW are both primarily PvE games. This game has a PvP focus. The PvE is a simple skill developement chore (grind)

If you go in thinking you are going to be entertained like in WoW, you will probably not like it.

If you are looking for something a bit different, its not bad. Do your homework on the offical site or some fansites first though, this site useless for the info you really need to know. All that you can get here is peoples love/hate opinions.

Yes I was finally able to get in.

edit - I took your quiz, I got ...

You are Nyarlathotep!
The Crawling Chaos, you serve your masters the Outer Gods with an open disdain for their mindless ways. You yourself are smart, twisted, and, unlike most Gods of the Mythos, have a recognizable personality; you are funny, mocking, and thouroughly evil.

Well I lied, I saw the game in the store yesterday after work and I grabbed it on a whim (despite my wifes protest lol) Anyway I was curious after reading all this love hate messaging and had to find out for myself. (especially since I'm not really playing anything right now)

Granted I only played yesterday evening but I thought I would post a few of my first impressions. Again, I'm no fan or hater, I was just overly curious and bored with my current game selection.

The first thing that struck me logging in was the nice music but no option to create an account. Just a log in. Weird, I had to fumble around and go to the web page.

Once in, the graphics look terrific! It is like jumping into a hard core anime show. I really liked the style except for one thing, why are there TWO elf looking races??? Since there are only 3 races, you are kinda stuck playing either a big elf, small elf or the robots. Given they all look good, but two similar looking races is a waste IMHO. A straight Human or a completely different looking alien might have been a better choice. Oh well, they are stuck with that design decision now. Note on the character creation - I didn't see any explanation of the 4 class picks. Do your research before you create.

Once I got past the character creation I did the tutorial. I always check out a games tutorial in case it has some info I need to know before I get into the world. (RF gives you the choice to skip it) Do yourself a favor and skip it. The tutorial itself provides no info you cant figure out on your own in about 2 minutes of opening up the menu and looking yourself. Not to mention it is the longest and most basic tutorial I have ever seen.

In the game now - The starting city (the short elf guys) looked really cool. The graphics looked really good. Its all very bright and colorful, very striking. It is not like a game like EQ2 where everything has a more subdue look. Again it is like jumping into an anime show. The movement is all point and click with rotating camera control. Pretty easy stuff. You can use keys if you like. (I didn't look at any customization, sorry, I overlooked it) I didn't like the chat window either. I was sorta clunky to use. Other then that the interface is pretty standard and straight forward. Very clean looking and does not intrude on the game play.

Other then that, its pretty straight forward. I liked how the "quest" are transmitted directly to you from an NPC, I'm guessing from a sci-fi communicator or something. It eliminated the need to hunt for NPC's. The "quest" themselves are simple kill task. Very straight forward. Go kill 5 and 10 of this. It pretty much what I expected. All the while the in game chat was busy with messages about Cora players making their way into a tunnel. (I'm not to familiar with the game but I'm guessing they where somewhere in the area. That did bring a bit of "life" into the atmosphere. I can see if all you had to do was follow the kill task, where you would find the game very dull. However with the perceived threat of enemy players, it made you feel like you are part of a world with much more going on then grinding. Like DAoC with its realm broadcast.

Combat was very easy to get into. Select and attack. Pretty standard. Manage your special abilities and watch your "blue" bar. I don't know where everyone got this, there are no skills to manage" stuff. I have about 2 or 3 specials per weapon type and a few buffs. (warrior) I really liked how the fire arms worked. Playing a sci - fi game, personally I have no interest in swords and shields. I can play my WoW account for that. Give me gadgets and goodies. The players of the game are leaning heavily toward to melee weapons I noticed. There may be a technical reason for that, I didn't look into the game enough to find out why. The machine guns and shot guns worked just fine and where actually fun to use. Loot drops where plentiful and cash easy to  come by. (at least at my point) I kinda understand the PT system, the useless tutorial could stand to address this subject rather then the 5 minutes of camera control.

(note - the healing potions. RFO has NO support class like a healer and such. I guess the design concept is to put everyone into the action of fighting. Without support classes, the healing potion is really the only way to go. You will use alot. I guess it works in the design idea, not sure if I like it though. In the end, it does speed up combat play but makes you dependent on having healing potions)

It still feels like its missing a few core sci - fi standards. Starships and controllable vehicles. This is a mistake I would hope they address in future updates. I understand they are adding more worlds over time but the absence of vehicles is very noticeable.

Its a decent game, no award winning material here but worth a try if you like the look or the genre. It definitely needs some work. The chat interface is pretty bad and its missing a few core sci-fi things like vehicles and ships. (so did SWG at first in all fairness) The potential of the game is pretty good given they are planning on bringing 9 worlds total into the game. I would assume vehicles would eventually appear also. It has pretty clear cut PvP with clear goals and areas (unlike SWG which fumbled around with its PvP until it was more or less abandon by the devs) It has a definite DAoC feel in that respect. Personally I would be a bit more gung-ho about it with my experience if I had more to pick from then 2 elf races and it had some vehicles. I can see where people who do not like grinding wouldn't like this game out the door. It is very basic in that respect. A better more engaging integration of the PvE would have been a better design choice OR just eliminate it all together and base skills on a planetside like system. As it stands right now, grinding simply provides equipment and XP. If you look at the larger scope, you can easily see the PvE is inconsequential to the game as a whole and not the focus.

The game performance, considering its new, is excellent. I had no problems at all. Smooth log in, smooth game play. Although I found the wilderness terrain to be out of place. Very basic looking. Oh well, its not a game about looking at the trees. Take it for what its worth, it appears to be a quality game with a future in front of it.

I dont mean to be dispespectful but how could you not know about that until 60?

If you liked the game otherwise, why not just go to a PvP server? That should be closer to what you want. There are still the BG's but you can pick a fight anytime you want with opposing faction.

Nothing really prevents you from doing that in a non PvP server either. You just need to get the other guys to flag. Lead a group to the crossroads or something, depending on your faction. You would be surprised to see how many people will show up to a good fight.

I agree with the OP. So far we haven't seen really any concrete info to get excited about. I know I am really looking forward to this game -- based on what I think it might be like. Even some of the post here in this thread are speculative.

Its great there are GM's here on MMORPG but really, forum sites only account for a small percentage of players. The official site should be leading the way with info not fan sites.

Outside of screenshots, a single movie from the last E3 (made by a fan it looks like) and the Q&As here, I really have nothing to go on. Fan site info....well how do you know its accurate?

One reason I struggle between this and Vangard is that there is so much more info available for Vangard. If I want to know about something, class, race, magic, skills, I can look at the Vangard site and find out. I think this game (HJ) sounds much more promising, but don't alot of them?

I hope it is the calm before the storm They gave out a vague Q2 release timeframe but I hate to say it, Q2 technically starts in a few weeks and we still have an information blackout. So far the pre-release hype from this game is striking out. There have not even been any magazine interviews. Games not releasing this year have already gotten their hype out in most of the industry mags. Like any product there needs to be a strong advertising campaign if you want the public to know about your product and make a fair buying decision.

I would hope they would put out some info we can sink our teeth into very very soon.

DDO is sorta like Guild Wars except it...

Only has one city and there is no world whatso ever, you can't get any NPC henchmen, there is no PvP, and no storyline not even a basic one.

Yeah I tried it and I can't tell you how disappointed I am Thats what I get for putting any stock in anything Turbine does. These guys just need to stop making MMORPG's.

(edit - yes, I knew most of that going in however, I didn't expect it to be that small scale. Literally the only place to go is the "tavern" where you pick up a mission. Thats it.)

(I didn't care for the art very much either. I like playing Dwarves but the DDO Dwarf looks more like a short fat guy then a fantasy Dwarf. I also didn't like the interface, it felt cluttered. IMHO)

The scope of this game is so limited you may as well play a console game. All that time and hype over this game and all it is, is a stripped down version of GW with a monthly fee.

Never say never, games like EVE and UO have demonstrated time and again that Open PvP is possible and can be a very meaningful part of the game if implmented correctly.

OK so I stand corrected . I never tried EVE and I did a trial of UO recently but the 2d and interface really just gave me a headache. (I don't mean that as a comment about the game itself, it literally gave me a headache, everything is so freakin tiny) I was thinking more along the lines of WoW, GW, DAoC and L2.

In the end, it comes down to a matter of taste. I agree that DAoC looks like they have the best concept going so far. While WoW and GW PvP is fast paced, well balanced and fun, it is in instanced zones that have absolutely NO impact on the persistent gameworld whatso ever. In WoW its basically all about grinding out honor so you can get new gear. Thats about as uncompelling as you can get IMHO (outside of FFA) GW has even less reason to really PvP, you just move up a later system.  Like I said, both are fun but really, what is the point?

DAoC there was a point, you fight (or choose not to fight, there was stuff to do otherwise) for your realm. Out in the frontiers there are castles and relics that have a definite impact on everyone in the gameworld. Even a game like RFO (I haven't played it yet) looks like its PvP has a point. Get control of the mines for your "realm". WoW and GW are simple "shooter" formulas. While there is nothing wrong with this approach, it adds ZERO to the RPG element of the name MMORPG. Capture the flag is about as non-RPG as you can get. The market appears to really like this base simplistic approach.....go figure.

FFA will never work out simply because for each person having "fun" there will need to be a "victim". It would be an unstructured mess that would probably drive people away (as it has) The market has proven FFA PvP is NOT what the players want in a MMORPG. Proof - look at any of the FFA games out right now, all are dead and dieing games, with the exception of L2 which holds on strong in Asia with about 2 to 4 million subscribers. L2 is a difference case though as it does have a mix of both. The compelling reason is the control of the castles at higher levels. There is a sort of FFA aspect BUT it does have consequences. North Americans appear not to like this mix as L2 only holds about 70K subscribers here.

Structured WORLD impacting PvP looks like the way to go. There needs to be a compelling reason (aside from getting mathematically enhanced equipment) to PvP if its to be really engaging. I see many post post about how FFA is what the players want but the market demographic clearly shows people are not interested in this type of PvP. If that was the case games like AC - Darktide would be overflowing with people despite the age of the game.

Do you have a point to your post, because all I see is some spiffy highlighting without addressing what exactly it is your trying to prove ... I had addressed many of the crap posts I see people complaining about in this game.  Things they expect from it and stuff they wish was there ... But in the end they are being wishfull dreamers. The stuff they asked for no one ever said was going to exist. This game is wholely designed around its PVP elements and in that regard it is actually a very well done game. Don't play this if you want PVE and for people that think it sucks because it doesn't ahve PVE is just being foolish and/or self-centered ... Not everyone wants the same crap over and over and not everyone wants the same things in games. This game Caters to a crowd that is often left with table scraps in the Western MMO market. PVP in western games frankly sux, and thats why most westerners find themselves playing FPS's and what not for that PVP element. That doesn't mean we don't like Sci-Fi, Fantasy or MMO elements ... and when presented with a game like this we actually ENJOY it. Its jsut sad that we have to rely on hand me down Eastern market games for decent PVP. Because of course these games will often have translation issues and lack other things we "could" desire. Even so that doesn't change the fact many people do find this game enjoyable and theres a ridiculous amount of crap talkers who didn't like the game because they went in expecting something else, meanwhile most the people that do like it arent on here saying so because they are to busy playing it to really care....

This is more or less true in the sense that the North American crowd really doesn't know what it wants in an MMORPG. No matter what a company tries, the NA audience does not seem to go to it. WoW is the only mass NA hit vs the dozen or so worldwide. The MAJORITY of WoW players are not even NA's. Games like L2 are clear hits in Asia while almost nothing can as easily be defined as a "success" in NA. (with the exception of WoW) The PC game market is by far much much larger then the MMO crowd, but MMO's are doing something "wrong" and just not drawing them in. NA's gamers (as a whole -console, PC and MMO's) do not appear to like the idea of "leveling" or "grinding" for the sake of doing it. Almost ALL NA game designers have failed to recognizes this. WoW clearly saw that, hence the easy progression. GW allso saw this and allows you to skip the progression altogether. Both are market successes. EQ2 did not...and as one can see, it is not have near the success of the other 2 games. (EQ2 has been running in damage control mode since launch) NA's "appear" to want to get to the point of the game right away. (I know I do) If it has a primary PvP feature, well let me get to it...not 50 levels in. However MMO's designers continue to put up barriers. Asia is a bit difference. It appears the Asian crowd really doesn't care about PvE. It appears to be seen as a side "task" to improve character abilities or progression. Asians look to be much more focused on community driven rather then task/static game content. (as demonstrated by the overwhelming success of both Lineage games) neither game is known for its "content" but are clearly community/player based.

The basic problem with the NA (WoW) approach is keeping the game "fun" or engaging enough to hold onto a subscription for a long period of time. As you can see with WoW, the easy progression means your crowd gets to the endgame quickly and hence "finish" and loses interest in the game just as quickly. The lack of "community building" and dependance of provided content loses many players once they solo to cap and can't find anything they like to do because at cap, the game becomes group centered. The game has promoted soloing and individual play up on to the end then expects the player to shift gears at cap.

Games with torturous grinds like L2 keep gamers away because it simply take far to long to "get to the point". (although the point is fully realized, its just to hard to get to)

Again arguing about what game has better "content" is like arguing who has better tasting water. The content of ALL MMO's to date is very poor and uninspired. No dynamic implementation of anything. Static kill task for st
