The problem with "replacing" TR is the sad fact that 95% of current MMO's are fantasy grinders. There are no real Sci-Fi, near future games really out there.

You could hit SWG or AO but really thats it outside of maybe CoH.

Gonna have to sit tight for KotOR, Fallen Earth, Earth Rise, The Agency or maybe APB. /shrug, whatcha gonna do?

Well at least NC gave it a try.....

It just boggles me that they can't leave one server going...there are something like 30,000 playing this, isn't there? Ruthless Koreans.

IMHO they are only doing this because the game has "Richard Garriott" plastered all over the title. If he wasn't such an egotistical tool maybe the game wouldn't be in this boat.

What do you guys think, would you play a post apocalyptic style MMORPG?

Want to feel like Mad Max?

Or like you're living in the world of 'fist of the north star' ?

I think it'd be totally sweet *thumbs up for 7 seconds*

HAve you looked at Fallen Earth?

I'm not defending their ethics; I'm defending their profitability and they're a f*ckton more profitable than NCSoft is.  You need to understand that business success =/= customer ethics.

Here's a link to Sony's Q2 Financial Report.  From the 2007 annual financial report SOE reported a revenue of $880,647,506.00.  Now, since NCSoft only release quarterly reports, and they reported an earnings of $56,223,834.43 in Q3 of 2008, we'll just quadruple that to simulate a year.  So in one year NCSoft managed to pull in $224,895,338.00.

Edit: My math is teh suck and I think I may have screwed up with the decimal.  There's a very good chance the annual revenue is 8 billion and not just 800 million but I'm way too lazy to double check it for some random forum yahoo.

Also, I said 'triple" when I meant "quadruple."  The math was correct, however.

LoL

Thats not SOE, thats ALL of Sony. (everything from movies, cell phones, console....)

Nice try though.

Yeah i for one think it is fucking ridiculous , a game that lasted not even 2 years!!! Ooooooooohhhhhh a whole free month of game play , what the hell is the point in playing and advancing your character when service will stop.

Why is it "ridiculous"?

It's called business. The game obviously wasn't paying the bills so they are pulling the plug. NC isn't like SOE and keeps everything running on a welfare "pass thing" with 2 games basically keeping 7 or 8 alive. MMO's are business and business wasn't good for Tabula Rasa.

Be honest, not enough people cared about this game hence the subscriber rates being as low as they were. If the game was making money, it wouldn't have gotten unplugged. NCSoft announced a while back they were looking to do this so its not a big shock.

Its not like the current subscribers aren't getting anything from NC. They are basically getting a bunch of free time on their other games plus beta and free time to Aion. It's over $100 in free play time.

* 3 free months of City of Heroes including digital client. $45.00
* 3 free months of Lineage II including digital client $45.00
* Aion beta access (coming soon)
* Aion pre-order access (available in 2009)
* 1 free month of Aion including digital client (available in 2009) $14.99

Did you even subscribe to the game???? If not then it's "ridiculous" that you think it's "ridiculous" that they are shutting it down. Maybe if less people thought it was "ridiculous" and actually paid for the game, it wouldn't be shutting down.

It's actually more than what you just quoted above because you're also getting the L2, CoX, and Aion clients which one would otherwise have to purchase seperately from a subscription.  Well, CoX and Aion at least.  I don't know dick about L2.

Yeah I'm not sure about that "client" part. You may end up paying for the client once the free time is over. That blurb isn't specific enough at this point.

Why's that?

IMHO they are much better at running a business then those knotheads at SOE.

LOL, SOE pulls in WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY more cash than NCSoft could ever dream of.

Oh, and that Smedley fella?  Yeah, since he's been in charge SOE profit has increased.

Sorry bud, you're just wrong

Why's that?

IMHO they are much better at running a business then those knotheads at SOE. Their game welfare system hasn't exactly produced a bunch of games that have grown over time with what they perceive as "improvements". All they have managed to do is set up a system where EQ and EQII produce enough money to keep all the rest of their deserted games running on a handful of empty servers. Have you played VG / Matrix / PS lately? EMPTY....(yes my station pass shut off last month so I have seen them) PotBS...almost EMPTY. EQII isn't all that great in pops either IMHO...almost EMPTYyyyyyyyyy....... SWG....EMPTYYYYYYYYYYYY.

SOE games are for people who don't like to play MMOs with other people.

Tabula Rasa wasn't cutting it so they shut it down. IMHO more companies need to learn when to throw in the towel and admit when they lose rather then continue to burn the paying customers with weak half hearted attempts to give the illusion the game is alive and happy.

That list on the left...50% of those games are a waste of the consumers time for the simple fact that the servers hardly have any people in them and they are barely supported.

OP -

no this game wouldn't do well with one of those stupid "shop F2P game" companies. Its not designed as a free to play game.

NCSoft doesn't sell off its old / shut down games, ask Auto Assault.

I played TR in Beta and for about a month or so after its' release. IIRC, I made it up to somewhere in the low to mid 30s before I quit.

So, first let me say that I liked the game and am sad to see it go. That said, I'm not terribly surprised that it happened.

All through Beta (at least from the time I entered into it), the Devs were adjusting the classes. Not minor adjustments, but fairly major ones. And then, once it went retail, they adjusted things again between final beta and retail. All these adjustments, changes, re-thinking, etc led to lots of bugs and unintended consequences. Abilities and features that were supposed to be part of the release were absent. Higher level content was sparse. Higher level zones were much like lower level zones, only with different colored and more plentiful MOBs. Instead of feeling more capable as you gained level, you felt less -- I did, anyway.

Quests were broken (not surprising early after release) and, especially in the higher levels, text was grammatically... bad. Really bad. It just seemed sloppy.

So, ultimately, I'd say that while the concept was very good -- I liked the plot quite a bit -- the execution was not there. Their reach exceeded their grasp. The buzz -- much like what happened to Conan -- went negative fast, and as this was not a big name IP, it stood even less of a chance of recovering from its early days than Conan, and I think we all know Conan is a failure that will eventually fold under its poor subscriber base.

I wish TR had waited longer before release. I wish they had a better and more consistant vision of how the classes would work and how effective they should be and that the Devs *stuck* with it. Instead, their changes put them behind the 8-Ball and they never got out from that spot.

So farewell, Tabula Rasa.

R.I.P.

Yeah I just finished a trial last week and I gotta say it was pretty good. I also just won a free copy from massively.com. I was kinda hyped to play this game. Now I hope my copy gets here before they shut it down lol.

TR is just another victim of a really poor launch and another over inflated ego driven "visionary".

Oh well.

Like everyone said this was no surprise really. I posted a topic last week speculating the game would shut down because I was concerned about subbing.

Looks like I missed out on a free copy of Aion and I could have used the 3 free months to CoH.

Cool your jets mately.

NCSoft made a very nice package for the people currently subscribed. Very, very nice.

First off, it's important to note that all of these goodies are only available to people who were subscribed to Tabula Rasa at the time of this announcement. That's right. There was no warning, or time to prepare. They are rewarding those who have stayed subscribed to the game, rightfully so.

* 3 free months of City of Heroes including digital client.
* 3 free months of Lineage II including digital client
* Aion beta access (coming soon)
* Aion pre-order access (available in 2009)
* 1 free month of Aion including digital client (available in 2009)

Think about all of that for a moment. That's basically three free games, three free months of play in two of the games, beta access to what may be one of the most highly-anticipated MMOs in 2009, one free month of play in that game and special pre-order access to same game. Even though I'm sure most TR lovers would gladly trade in all of that to keep the servers going, NCsoft is being quite generous with their severance package.

So for all of you out there who will be able to enjoy these rewards, you deserve it. We will mourn the loss of Tabula Rasa at the end of February, and you can certainly count on more TR news and coverage from Massively up until the last server is disconnected.

Dude, how many times have I told you that I'm f*cking psychic?

So you gonna play CoH with me and the wife now or what?

I don't remember you call the demise of TR but since I haven't played that game in months (may'ish) I haven't followed the TR boards much.  Its a shame, we really need other genres in the MMO market other than the standard fantasy dwarf, elf, orc crap. Hopefully someone will make a sci-fi MMO that breaks the niche mode they are in currently.

No, no COH for me, I just can't get into that game.

Anyway, I'm sad for all the players who enjoyed the game. It always sucks when sh*t like this happens.

Sorry to hear guys.

I didn't think it was a bad game at all with the trial I just did. /shrug. Blaim it on a sh*t launch and that idiot Garroitt. If he spent less time stroking his ego and playing spaceman spiff maybe the game would have had a better run.

I am baffled by chronic haters and defenders.

I can see voicing your views and opinions but I just don't get people who don't even play a game or haven't in a while but feel compelled to haunt a forum and reply to like every post anyone makes that goes against that persons dislike for the game.

There are more then a few of those here any they are just wierd. I mean its just not normal to compulsively keep hanging on to the forums and bashing on a game months or years after you stop playing.

Fanbois I can understand a bit more, they are actually  playing and they feel the game is worth their time and are excited about them. Its like any other hobby.

Haters...its like going to a football game and theres a dude yelling outside the wall that football sucks.

Developers have just been too lazy to release their MMO in a finished and bug free kind of state.

And no, I don't think that the market for online games has become saturated because it has been growing steadily with each passing year.

I don't think the market is over saturated with MMORPG's...

IMHO, it is over saturated with poorly made / launched FANTASY MMORPG's. AoC, Vanguard, Fury and a dozen others.

Also it is over saturated with WoW / EQ look alikes. LotRs & WAR immediately pops to mind. Uninspired and uncreative gameplay that frankly has already been done better.

Well back on topic

Nope, no modern or early historical war game MMO's

About 2 years ago they were talking about a Call of Duty MMO but it looks like that went out the window with CoD 5 releasing (back to WWII, Pacific this time)

There was also a brief mention of an war MMO based on Tom Claney's novels. That one disappeared and was never mentioned again.

IMHO, the last 3 years of failed fantasy MMO's have given this genre a serious blackeye and I don't think to many investors are interested in them right now.

You could give Planetside a try. That's Sci-Fi but it use to be a great persistant shooter back when people played it.

Tabula Rasa is a pretty good Sci Fi action MMO. They have capture points, psuedo FPS style combat (but in the third person) and rocket launchers that actually kill stuff in one shot plus a fairly strong RPG aspect. Its problem is that its PvE focused.

Other then that, stick with regular shooters. MMO's make poor wargames, they are to slow paced and simple. If they speed up the play tempo to much like in Tabula Rasa's or Planetsides case, the general community can't deal to well with it. MMOers like that slow paced auto attack play. Throw them an EQ or WoW clone where they can kill 10 rats standing front of them and they are happy little campers.
