Beta = unfinished build of a game, bugs and problems still present

Open = open to the public eye, no NDA

Payment and information required are directly related to the developer company. Don't expect an M rated game to have a no registration/ no proof of age of some sort.

Most people confuse open betas (pre launch) with free trials (post launch).

Actually the most financially successful games were delivered unfinished at launch. So completion upon launch does not equate financial success.

You mean AO snares, not roots, right?

To Grunties:

Open beta equals no NDA for the participants. What you're describing is irrelevant.

This my friend, is the very definition of trolling.

Do you think that other people trolling justifies doing it yourself?

Yes, if they can troll, I can troll.

Second its not trolling if I am responding to a post directed at me.

You sir are the first person on these boards I consider blocking from view. At least you're an honest troll. There are others that will not openly admit that they have zero input on the threads they post and they just do it to stir trouble.

To be honest, I was surprised that the general impression was more positive than negative. Given the past few weeks and the changes I've experienced, I now believe that the game will have a good launch.

What remains to be seen is whether it will keep the people drawn to it once the honeymoon period is over. And no, the honeymoon period is not the first month. The first month is only for the people who have done no research and just bought blindly a copy (most of them don't bother with forums of any kind).

To Xris375:

Well, I consider myself to be an active MMORPG player, thus the reason I'm frequent these boards. I'm not here to just post on the board for the sake of it. There are people negatively and positively oriented towards the games presented in these boards. And that's perfectly fine, we can't all like the same stuff. The best we can accomplish is to like similar stuff.

You also have to realise that the people frequenting these boards are the minority of players active in MMOs. The vast majority doesn't care about them, unless they are in a transition phase. I'm in a transition phase myself. I'm torn between a game that is soon to be released (AoC) and a game already active (LOTRO). If I had a choice however to play a futuristic game, in the sense of AO or SWG or a wastelands game, I wouldn't be playing the ones I mentioned. I don't however. So I'm going to play one of the two.

None of all the games I mentioned are "crap". They are probably not what you're looking and they probably lack so many features that you won't be playing them even if it was the only choice. But that's your taste. They taste crap to you. I respect that. I also respect the fact that you believe that Darkfall has something to offer. I don't believe it, but I respect it.

Now, to cooky cutter builds. Once upon a time in UO, the tank-mage build was reigning supreme above anything else in PvP. The majority that was PvPing had adopted the build and everyone that was competitive about it, was following the trend. You see, in the end, regardless of whether the system raises skills or raises levels, people will open the spreadsheets and find the min-max build that suits their particular play style. It is inevitable and it only takes time. The only difference is that level based archetype builds prevent exact carbon copies.

Skill based progression supremacy over levels is an illusion. A myth. A fallacy that was created over time due to the nostalgia associated with the games of the past. The reality is that both systems are equally valid. Both need their balance and both can be fun.

OP, you may want to update your drivers to the 174.xx range. nVidia claims that they resolve issues causing stattering, at least in Crysis.

Even if your in beta and you know for a fact?

Even if we're in beta. If that is you, you need to log more than once every 3 days ;)

Some people hate the game, it's ok, they are entitled to.

To  Ahiles :

We finally agree on something. You're assuming the things that are not currently presented will not make it at launch. You think your assumptions are well based. Well, if you want to know the truth, I have made myself the same assumptions. Check my own history to see for yourself.

Please understand that while I agree that I don't believe that everything will be in place at launch, I do believe that everything will be in place for the semi-casuals (aka the majority of the player base) to experience.

As long as the performance is spot on and the game is fun, the game will succeed for the people that like it. And more important, it will keep the company financially viable, which is something that is needed for future expansion and further development.

He is talking about the closed general beta, not the PvP event.

For the love of sweet mighty zeus, none of that is in Genral or any other magical game build, or fantasy build you think they have.  Spellweaving and massive pvp will come 2-3 months after launch.

Where exactly did I say that these are in the general beta? Please don't put words on my mouth. And do keep your assumptions for yourself. You assume the things that are not available won't be available at launch. You may be right, but you also may be wrong. It's just a prediction and nothing more than that.

The OP mistook what the developer said about features missing from the PvP event as features missing from the GB. Some are missing from both. The issues he described and I commented on may have been in the PvP even but are not ... this is pointless. Only the build number can clarify this.

Do you remember the build number you played in the PvP event? It shouldn't break any NDA mentioning that.

I don't want to be harsh, but I hope you realise that you put a considerable amount of faith that Darkfall will even see the light of day, let alone have the features you're hoping it has (being from the same country as the developers makes me even more sceptical of their ability to organise it).

Graphics is a client issue, usually amended by dropping the detail level.

Balance is like the wine, the older it gets, the better it tastes ;)

Seriously people, this game has gone GOLD,  now you will now see how bad the ACTUAL game is and not the tech test pvp weekend they had, there is no miracle internal version of the game.    This game will deliver on Vanguard proportions, so much for next gen mmo.  There is absolutely nothing next gen about this game whatsoever.

Beta was played on a 2month old client, and even if it was played on the actual client they have 1month to improve some stuff. If this game launches tomorrow, It will be NOWHERE near VG launch. The question isnt if this game is going to flop, It's wether it will be acceptable, good, or excellent.

Here is a newsflash beta is played on the actual version and I mean general not setup Tect test which is was the same as the pvp weekend.  There is nothing they can change and improve now till rlease, bacuse you know why?  ITS GONE GOLD.

Actually, as I previously mentioned, the issues the OP described are not present in the closed GB. Whether you want to take my word for it or not is something you got to decide for yourselves. As I keep on telling, try before you decide to do anything regarding the game.

The claim that nothing can change because the game has gone gold is also ridiculous. In all the MMOs I participated for the first time, the very first thing I did was to patch them. With a big patch. That usually fixed a lot of last minute issues. I don't see anything different happening in this case either. Worse case scenario, the DVDs carry the heaviest load of data, ie textures, voice overs and intro videos. Anything else can be patched from scratch with minimal fuzz.

Actually what was told is that the beta test client does not currently have directX 10 support. As far as I know, the developers stated that the directX 10 support will be available on the released client.

Not even the closed general beta testers can answer that since, obviously, all experience gain was accelerated.
