1. the results are based on more than just popularity (like many things in life) 2. the results are based on votes of people on this site (who have tried many other games) someone above me made the comment that many WoW players don't even know what an MMO is. they just find that one fun and never (and i mean never) look at any other MMO. people here are exposed to every MMO out there. 3. being the biggest does not automatically make you the best 4. the list is always skewed when a new release comes out 5. the one you see on the main page is basically the admins of this site and their views. it is a good list but again its their list and not everyone will agree.
WoW is a good game don't get me wrong, but it is not one of the best around.
SWG-------------------------Guild wars-----------WoW---------------------(insert really good MMO that you like)
i did not put an MMO into that last slot as i know many would flame me for it |

i played for 2 weeks before the NGE and for 1 week after (lucky me)
population? it was good (on my old dialup it was killer...the most (on my server) populated city is the start point for all new players...that was murder on my system). PvP was crazy and was everywhere. i saw 3 bounty hunters take out targets in the middle of a (packed) Cantina to the shock of everyone inside. endgame did not exist as the game was basically all about your (everyday) life in the game.
now for the NGE very small population, most people you see are inside cities and they are basically there spamming trade stuff (or have robots doing it for them). bots are out in the wilderness (but they wont trouble you, there is plenty to kill out there). Player cities are everywhere (its bloody annoying to try and drive across the planet with cities every 500m or so). PvP is more focussed (only happens in a few locations). i never got to the endgame but it was pretty much raids for better gear.

both games (and every game set to come out in the last quarter) will strive (read work their a## off) to be released for the Christmas sales (which are insanely high). however Blizz is in no real hurry (except to get those sales if possible) and WAR is in a hurry (no game would EVER want to be released next to the biggest and most established game out there).
my prediction: WAR for a February release WOTLK for a April/May release
but what would i know? all i got is their press releases |

good combat system and it does not drain your system.
one thing i would want to see is an increase in the world size. (80 people on 1 map is nuts)
i think first we shall see a multiplayer mod (by someone with mad networking skills, really mad skills) |

something i just though of.
the world is huge right now...and its only going to get bigger.
google a map of middle earth and see how friggen tiny the area we are currently in...now look at all the areas that they will no doubt add (Rohan, Isenguard, Gondor and Mordor). its gonna increase by well over 20x its size right now. take the population of your server (how many people do you normally see when your out leveling?) then divide that by the increase in the size of the world (20x (roughly)if they add in all these lands) and its going to be low no matter what.
i think they need to really think hard about how they are going about this and really (and i mean really) think hard about every land they add in. |

again day of defeat is small maps.
simulations (google some and see how limited the graphics are) take a hell of a lot out of systems in the first place. a trade off for the great game play, seamless world and opportunities (like having several battles going on at once that have real time consequences for example) is always the graphics.

what would i love to see in an MMO? to be honest...i hate player run economies, the reason? i love RL economies and i know how they work. in an MMO where you got pretty much nothing to loose there are far too many retards stuffing up the economies. when i say stuffed up i dont mean in a WoW like way (twinks and stupid prices) but stupid prices (20c for something that cost 25c to make. or something that takes forever (effort..a big part of prices) to get and sells for a pathetic amount)
so what i want is a dev controlled/NPC controlled economy. supply and demand, inflation and changes in the market. i want wars to start that increase the arms market, celebrations to increase the goods market. things like that. SWG had a decent economy (could have been better).
the 2nd thing i want is events that shape the world. wars, famines, discoveries, advancement. |

SWG had a good idea. random pop ups. you know when you register for a site and it comes up with the weird text that bots cant read? put that in random pop ups in the game (every 2 hours or so) and make it worthwhile. e.g in Star wars it popped up when you were mining for minerals. it would say that a more concentrated source of the mineral (easier to mine) is located nearby. ask the player to type in the text he sees (and bots cant) and then give him a waypoint/minimap marker to the location.
as for gold sellers...you cant get rid of them. what cant discourage them is if crafting is a vital part of the game. raids and their epic gear only fuel more gold sellers and levellers. if a crafter (after a lengthy process) can craft (some) of the best items in the game then it would reduce the selling slightly. |

new releases always score 8.5+ then eventually drop back down to the low 8.X's
if you bother to look at the ratings of all the games you will see very few under 7.7 and i have seen some really really bad MMO's (FTP of course) getting 7.9.
in short...the rating system is seriously distorted |

any other Activision titles? |

it is. and if you like WAR then i doubt you will like AoC enough to warrant the $50 ($100 here...damn monopoly in the games market).
all i can suggest is one of the old MMO's ($5-20 usually) but they are a tad old. |

sorry but to me that is a complete and utter waste of an IP. starcraft on the other hand is set for an 09 release and this new MMO should roughly be around 2010/11 so thats a good gap between them. Starcraft 2 will always be popular as long as there is a South Korea (no offence intended).
