sorry but there never will be a king of pvp,

pvp can be broken up into 2 current groups

WoW-like:  fast gameplay with very little skill involved.  imbalanced greatly affect this style of pvp but it proves to be quite popular (WAR and AoC are like this)

SWG-like (only example i could think of off to the top of my head):  much more complex and slower than the other one.  usually open world and fights are never controlled (fight breaks out next to the noob lands or near a castle, there are no set PvP zones).  this one caters to the more hardcore pvp'ers (they like to loot the corpses of their foes and enjoy the complexity of skill based MMO's)

both have a strong following (the WoW one has more though) and both cater for the pvp crowd.  you can never have a pvp game that caters to both crowds as it would be lackluster at best and somewhat illogical.

i ditched quests after i finished WoW.  cant stand the stupidity of them or the time it takes (i dont care what people say it feels longer than grinding).  since then i only ever do dungeon quests or storyline/vital quests.  i grind quite a bit and find it much more fun and alot faster than questing (at least for me).

devs need to go back to the old pen and paper style of quests.  they task you to do one thing and you always find extra stuff along the way

e.g

kill the orc leader

hes in the middle of an orc camp so naturally you need to kill some orcs along the way.  but its not a part of the quest its up to the player to do (we like control )

more quests like that and i would actually bother with questing

as a hater of quests and lover of grouping i found Vanguard to be great at delivering on my fun needs.  i remember spending 4 hours under the world (some ancient asian ruins with clay warriors) with a group of people going backwards and forwards and killing anything in our path.  we came across several other groups along the way and exchanged friendly greetings with them.  as a cleric i loved to rez other people for the hell of it.  found a party that had wiped and rezed them all,  they thanked me and one gave me some cash.

i think Vanguard was great its just the bugs and glitches really hurt the game.  my only gripe was (currently) i am on a piece of crap machine (made in 2004) and i could never get above 22fps.  ever tried playing an open world and buggy game with 22fps?  its bloody hard.  i tested Vanguard on my friends PC (a beast of a computer) and managed a steady 60fps, bugs were alot less noticable.  so maybe when i hook up my new net and maybe when my beast of a computer gets access to the net, maybe i will go back to VG

Lotro is quite pretty (if your card can handle it).  endgame is a little small atm (i think 3 raids are currently in-game and monster play (pvp) is the other endgame.  crafting is a big passtime for many).

grouping is only forced when you follow the main storyline (best loot) and only for about 1-2 chapters or so per book (about 10-14 chapters per book).

when the Mines of Moria is released (close to December or early January) lvl cap will be raised and new dungeons implemented.  a new system where you can find a weapon and have it level up with you (find a sweet axe but dont want to get rid of it?  level it up with you, never give it up ).

as for diversity at the start you will look fairly similar to everyone but by lvl 10 or so everyone starts to look different.  dyes, outfits (basically you buy extra showy clothes that allow you to look different to everyone else but still retain your armour bonuses) and the character customization (coupled with titles) make everyone fairly unique in the world (more so than most MMO's).  the people who outfit their characters always look unique because there are so many pieces of clothing in the world+dyes and you can combine them in any way you see fit.

and as an added bonus is it the most casual  MMO in the market

so yeah Lotro sounds like a good game for you.

as for f2p...your never gonna get decent graphics from a f2p.  try guildwars if you really want graphics but that game doesnt have weapon variety or diversity like most games.

1st off there is the standard player base for every faction.  then toss in the kids because chaos are badass (at my local store and almost every kid that picked up the WAR box said he would play Chaos).  Chaos will be very popular and (unfortunately) Empire does not appear to have such a strong following.  Mythic does have a system in place to balance it so if you like to play underdogs then play Empire

what you fail to realise is the community has changed so much over the years.  UO vets were (mostly) older gamers (above 21) and so PK was fine because few abused it.  bring in Runescape and WoW and suddenly the community went from mature aged gamers to kids who wanted to grind for 100's of hours and pvp 24/7.  the kids come in and abuse (heavily) any PvP and PK system.

if you implement such a system now or give a FFA-PvP system to such a player base (like in AoC) it only ends badly.  the kids abuse the crap out of it, they camp, they spend so long online there are no safe times and whats worse they are jerks (sometimes rubbing it in or abusing you in chat).

sorry but the community has changed far too much to allow such a system.  only EvE can attempt at such a system (and they have done it well) because their game takes time to level up in.  kids want to grind to max lvl in 5 days, raid for the best gear then smash people who cant possibly beat them.  take away the 5 days leveled and all of a sudden you have a lot less kids in the game.

i doubt DAoC will die due to WAR.  it is a far more complex (wait 1-3 months after WAR's release and you will see why this is a good thing) and will retain a relativly healthy player base (about 1/3-1/2 of whats currently there if most people are only there for RvR)

also why do we even care?  they are both games from Mythic.

i dont give a toss how you did it.  unless you did it like the rest of us (grinding/questing) then it doesnt count.

as a person who could hardly kill anyone in AV i found myself smashing the AFK'ers on honour just by being on the frontline.  sure my average time spent alive would be just over a minute and most of my time was spent waiting for a rez but i had fun and got decent honour for it.

plus if you fight there is that (slim) chance that you might suddenly gain some skill, kill a few opponents, then loose that skill (had a few fiights with me against 2-3 guys and somehow end up being the only one left alive)

lol so many memories.

1st day of DnD 4th ed release (i needed a PhB to play in the session that night...relax...i picked up my official copy the next day) and spent ages watching the seeders slowly rise and the peers slowly fall.

best program for torrents would be Bit torrent as you can pause easily (if needed) and there is always someone seeding.

hell no.  the kind of people that go to those are scary.

my friend was lucky enough to pick the short straw (literally) and got the midnight release of TBC.  he said it was really scary dealing to so many freaks at once (normally he would get 1 or 2 in a day).

i went in the next day (9:10am, shops open at 9) walked up to the counter, no one in the shop but me, my friend and the clerk.  grabbed my copy and walked out.  all done in less than 3 minutes.  back on the bus and playing by 10:00am.

i find that a hell of a lot better than standing in a line with a bunch of sleep deprived freaks waiting for my copy and dreading the drive home (p.s its winter here too...)

big guilds effect every game.  look at WoW.  11 million subs and many many guilds that dominate areas in one way or another.  does it bother anyone?  not really

i'm playing Lotro (Lifetime sub) for what it is and more so for what it will become (were only just about to enter Moria...that what...half a book into the 3 book series?).  as an MMO gamer i think its a requirement that you are optimistic as things will always change in the game and the game is always evolving.  buy a fps and thats exactly what you paid for.  the game doesnt change at all (unless expansions or major patches are used) and it will still be the same game 5 years from now.

midnight launch...sleeping...then i will wake up and laugh at those who were at the launch (the guys with bag under their eyes) and who (for some unknown reason) actually bothered to turn up to school/work

if its a normal daytime launch.  i'l pop into the store...take a look at the actual box and then leave.

  • pvp balances that effect PvE (to me its bloody lazy programming)

  • childish pvp (not everyone should be able to kill everyone easily.  some should be epic fights were a roll of the dice (or random numbers) determine who wins and gear doesnt play a role)

  • reduction in the effect of stat boosting items.  stat boosting items should only be in high level dungeons and should only give a slight boos (+5% accuracy or damage)

  • some more skill based MMO's (half and half really.  levels are ok in some games)

  • rethink endgame.  dungeons are good fun (5 or 6 in a group) and we need more, endgame should be easy to get into and fun to play.  rewards are only an added bonus

  • boost xp in grouping do not penalize it

  • always (emphasis on always) be looking to improve the 1-max level content NOT always focussed on endgame)

the big one for me is the last one.  i am happy to keep playing the current crop of MMO's (even if they are a bit frustrating at times) if they implement that.  we all like the first run from 1-max level but the 2nd and 3rd times are harder.  its even worse if said game has been out for years and nothing has been added to the low level zones.

a lot of it comes down to skill.  as a hunter (when we were "overpowered" in pvp) i found myself killing most classes ( a nice mix really but i tended to go for softer targets (rogues out of stealth, mages, warlocks and priests) and i got nailed by every class out there (rogues did not bother me as i usually positioned myself so that my teammates would be the first to feel the daggers of doom .

i think a lot of the problems with this kind of PvP is people expect to stand around (or do the same thing over and over) and expect things to work for them, for their opponents to follow a set path (like AI's).  get that out of your head and start thinking properly and you wont die so much, you wont have trouble with certain classes and you wont be frustrated (i found it enjoyable to kill 1-3 guys in a row before getting 2 or 3 shotted by a rogue or mage,  it did not bother me in the slightest).   you have to also think about it from a lore perspective.  some classes are supposed to be killers (rogues, hunters and mages).  yes it is a game and yes its supposed to be fair (or close to).  the devs are only human and you have to accept that some classes will always be better against your class than others.

yes atm there are 4 really OP classes and the others can hardly kill each other, thats a problem.  however only 1-2 OP classes and everyone else able to kill each other is fine in my eyes.

anyway what would i know?  i only played the pvp for 4 weeks before the BC (guess why) and never went back

i dont think WAR is going to be the be all end all.  hell it wont even be all that different from the other games...but i will still give it a shot.  just because every other game out there burned you out does not mean every one that is released will be the same.  you never know, WAR might be your cup of tea

man you people wont give up will you?

WAR may take a couple of thousand WoW players in NA and (maybe) EU (not so sure since i hardly play with anyone from there).  it wont dent the millions of players in China and, with 11 million subs, they have plenty to fall back upon.

look at the statistics for every "major" MMO that has launched in the past 2 years.  all have never broken the 1 million subs mark.  most hover between 250-500,000 and most are slowly declining (aparently).  if you think WAR will be any different you are sadly mistaken.
