This could be the game that brings back challenge to MMORPG's.  I know many of us have been missing that in most recent MMO releases.

I'll be there tonight...  And when you have interest in lore and good stories... Just make sure to put this on your agenda.

How is yet another 'fighting game disguised as a mmorpg'  considered Fresh and new?

Mmo Devs all seem to have de-volved to remaking Virtua Fighter.

The fighting system of TCoS (on paper) looks to me like a good mix of action (fps) and tactics (choosing your skills). Somehow i hope that when playing this game with a whole different combat system then anything we have ever seen before (Mobs are ought to actually have AI) not to be constantlky remembered of games i played before.

And beleive me, i tested/tried/played all wellknown MMO's

But we will never know for sure if i'm right or wrong untill we tried the game for ourselves...My hopes are still high.

They definately want to do things that are different. I wonder how well people will accept things that go against the grain over conventional standards.

Swimming isn't being implemented until a later date.
No healing pots.
The majority of abilities make you stand still during the time the animation is playing.
Healing abilities have additional effects just like attacks.
No form of resurrection allowed.

Looking forwad to the next chat.

about the swimming i don't think it won't be missed much since there probably won't be any large lakes or something, you know all those shards and exploded pieces :p

the healing pots is a daring move, same for the no resurrection, they really want people to focus on their skill and not just waste their character. but as they said, there will also be shrines inside the instances, so it's not like it'll be a large problem :)

Every class has some form of abillity to heal himself... So healingpots will not be missed, next to that.... I don't remember any healing potions in EQ and DAoC or Vanguard..... Healingpotions will only be missed by people that compare all and everything to WoW... and a lot of those people will keep playing WoW because they are still addicted to its gameplay.

Just watch all these video's :

 www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/setView/videos/gameID/207/videoId/1112

And this one , It shows the first MMO with real AI :

 www.jeuxonline.info/video/374/ia-development-diary-the-humanoide-opposition

And then head over to the News archives at TCoS.com to read all about the game...

 tcos.com/en/news/

And then you'll know why i am expecting so much from this game.

Either you're gonna love this game, or it may be to action paced for you, but this game still looks and feels like the most fresh developer MMO project since EQ.

You may think I'm stupid for it, but I've lost all desire to play this game. I've been in the cue for beta for almost two years, and haven't even received a single email on updates or anything. I think they hate me.

They even told me it would raise my chances if I talked in their forums, but still I hear nothing. Seriously, it's one screwed up system they've got for this beta I think.

Hah!  I gotcha beat.  I won along with I think 99 other people a beta invite to the Chronicles of Spellborn contest probably at least 18 months ago.  I have yet to have heard from them.

Edit:  I found the promo contest for beta accounts.  http://mmorpg.com/spellborn_promo.cfm

Just search for my name and I haven't heard anything from them.
We are sorry but this contest closed at 9PM EST on 11/01/2006. We will be selecting all 250 winning tickets and contacting each one by e-mail as well as MMORPG.COM private mail. The winners will have 24 hours to claim their prize...after this time they may be disqualified and re-selected using a method of our chosing (typically another random drawing).
Maybe you did not claim your price on time....

Next to that, it got me wondering how many of those 250 people are still enjoying the beta, as this was more then 2 years ago.... An early beta phase like that chases most people of intoo the mountains....

That video started out looking pretty good until i saw the HORRIBLE looking battle sequences. It looks like a korean cheap F2P game. The animations looked like those fast animations in the korean games ,where looks like 3 ani frames make up a sword swing.

The screenshots had me thinking terrible mapping work also but that video looked alot better.I know from other experiences some screens and videos don't always do proper justice. However i still can't get over those battles in the video just bad, bad, bad. The character animations are very weak, also they tend to be running with there arm in the same stance the whole time, never showing realistic movement.Hate to say it but i would fire there animation team, and get some people with better skills.Or did they purposely keep the whole poly count down to keep systems from lagging?i really can't wait to possibly hear some feedback from the spellborn team as to why they chose to look like a korean grindfest in there animations.

LMAO very sorry ,but i got as far as the first post of the video before i made my post.I then went on to read the other posts after i made mine and was very surprised everyone eluded to the animations.I thought i was the only one that paid attn. to detail [lol],but it seems pretty unaminous from the posters that the animations are brutal...really too bad,it may make or break this game.

Well, its a bit outdated , thye are using Unreal 2.5 (Heavilly modified)

But the movement annimations are not final yet.... these annimations will be a lot better at release. They decided to do the final annimations as llate as possible, as it would be a loss of time if they did annimations for something that would not make the final game...

Mythic is doing a instant city raid for one reason. To stop what was happening in DAOC 300 ppl in one spot at the same time. A very bad thing alot of people systems crashed because their computers couldn't handle it.

Sorry to burst your bubble but Mythic already said they were going to deinstance (they were instanced) City Raids because they were no fun.

I've got mixed feelings. I too remember the famous Relic Keep defenses/assaults in DAOC and trust me, with 200 or more players in the same zone, the game literally slows down to 3 fpm.  (like watching a very slow slide show)

If Mythic can figure out a way to stop that from happening in WAR, great, lets have one big instance, however if they can't, you'll learn the meaning of frustration when you hit this problem.

3 fps ...if you where lucky.... i sometimes went under 0.1 fps which ment wayting 15 secconds for a screenupdate

For games to be fun, lag needs to be reduced to a bare minimum.... If that requires instancing, so be it...

But for City raids... weren't it PvP quests that where done in instancess.... to my knowledge these quests still excists... but there will be mor enormall open non-instanced PvP battles added to that.

I mean, its good to see they add great things like castle sieges, but they can leave some things to expansions. I mean ok polishing is always good, but I think they can add things later, still.

Make haste! I am bored! =P

They decided to change some of the key feautures, because of response from the Beta testers...things like that take time and can't wayt till after release. that just takes time... And it seems that devs finally have learned that you need to release a somewhat finished product instead of a payed beta game.

Way to go Mythic...

Well... if there are many more people like me, i don't choose a race or side, i choose a class, and go with the race i get with that..Then things will be harder to ballance.

May i add TCoS, Spellborn, The chronicles of spellborn to that list..

It will be very action pact for an MMORPG and the first one to really blend an MMO and an FPS game together ...

I predict a slow start for TCoS... but it could be like a snowball, picking everyone tired of the standard MMO up along the way...... All depends on what they can deliver, but what i have seen is really promissing.

From the choicess you presented me i'd have to choose WAR... if PvP is anywhere near the fun i had in DAoC, then its a winner too. AoC dissapointed me uptill know , the combat still looks clumsy as allready pointed out. Aion, will just be another mindless grind festival, just not my cup of tea.

For DAoC up till atlantis everyone had access to comparable gear.

The Atlantis expansion changed that, They did some wonderfull PvE things with gear..... ((swords that grew in power the more deamons you killed with them, and awesome abbilites tight to gear))... But then i must have been the only one that really really liked what they did with their Atlantis expansion.

Most PvP ers disliked it... I myself are more a middle man in between PvE and PvP... But i hope some of the Epic gear we know from atlantis, gear that has to be leveled, will be available in WAR right from the start...

<hides behind some barrels of beer>

Seriously... I think WAR at release might be more on par With the DAoC at release gearwise...but thats nothing but a wild guess.

To my knowledge its been delayed for financiall reasons from March to April 2008.... The new financiall year starts 1st of April... So i am still guessing April 2008, and with the positive reports from the restarted closed beta comming in all over the place, i think they are right on schedule.

Next to the fact that we do not know anyhting yet about the Crafting and gathering of materialls in this game, i have a lot of unanswered questions about the PvE part of the game...

I know there will be generall quests that evryone joins when they enter a new area...sounds great, But are there also old fashioned Epic quest lines ?

And will there be single player tasks / chores (Which are also quests) like go kill 10 boars or gather 20 red flowers... In addition to the area quests?

Will there be PvE raids and will these raids give Uber loot, so everyone wants to do the PvE raids in addition to the PvP part of the game?

Will i be able to solo in PvE and still have a feeling of accomplishment ?

How good will MOB AI be compared to other MMO's, if you want to make solo PvE fun then it needs to be challenging and it requires some sort of good AI with the NPC's that attack you. Personally there isn't one MMO available that has the AI to make soloing an interesting thing.  Thats the main reason MMO's are much more fun in a group.

Will it be easy to find PUG's for PvE? I actually like meeting new people...PUG's is a nice way to meet new people.

Vanguard failed because soloing is boring in that game.

<serious> thats just one of the reasons it failed for me, and is failing again in my free month.

But the rest of them are allready named.

I am truly gonna be dismayed when the trial comes out and the newbies areas are revamped. For many pure adventurers, that was the only lore they got to experience for many levels until grouping in some dungeon areas. Who knows how SOE will handle this. Maybe they will put in NPCs to tell you how things used to be in the "old days". Of course, knowing SOE you will probably get XP for listening to their tales.

Well they fired the person who was working on Lore, probably the only one who knew the lore in the game so I dont think it's a big concern for SOE.

There is a huge amount of Lore in this game, sadly its mostly tight to diplomacy....

You allways will

Because they are invisible zone boarders with loading times...its because the Unreal engine does not allow for larger zones... And in early stages Sigil did not bother to program around that...

It will probably never change , as it is hidden deep deep very deep in the code.

Just have a look at the video Avery linked in the post above... and you'll see that mammots will only have their use for traveling and siege warfare,,,

On a normal battlefield they'll turn so slow that the horse mounted riders will have a huge advantage...they could allways make circles around the Mammot.. never be in reach of its weaponry teeth and kill the mammot of fast and quick.
