But more to the point I'm really curious about this MMO with a self running faction because I'd love to play it while I wait for Aion.

P.S. WoW invented the internet too

Your very first sentance in this paragraph is the perfect description of a good IT project.  For example just look at the iPod or the iPhone.  They popped a hard drive into an mp3 player instead of using flash memory and bam, top selling product.  Same thing with the iPhone, lots of different technologies combined into one device and they've got another winner.  By your description its the exact same situation with WoW.  You don't have to create something new, you just have to know how to put things together.

Failure and success are a matter of perspective, doom and gloom posts are sister to rise and shine posts, and even poor people need entertainment.  As hypocrtical as it is of me to say, you should appreciate what you have more, or atleast think about it more before you project your financial logic onto the rest of us.

lol.... the title "TCoS, hype, and you" made me think this could be a "group session". So let me share with the group:

I remember xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx in xxxxxxx xxxxx. It was the first time I've actually xxxxxxxx anything, coming from a poor rural family in the deep south. I had just sold our second house chair to buy a new game for christmas, but held off because of this xxxxxxxxxxxxx. When xxxxxxxxxx finally came and still no xxxxxxxxxx, i was crushed, and feeling very depressed and un-entertained. The promised xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx made me think that if I ever did get xxxxxxxxxxxxxx, it would be for only a couple of xxxxxxxx. I went ahead and spent my chair money on booze. When it finally xxxxxxxxxx, it was the xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ever seen. Knowing it was not going to really xxxxxxxxxxxxx to at least xxxxxxxxxxxx, I reformed myself through a jesus (can leave that correct?) infusion and have since gotten over my mmo addiction. (but I'm still un-entertained).

Edited: for legal reasons, at Thatim's request... (thanks for the heads up)

oh yea, and the point being....

it's better to not hype at all than to hype and not deliver.

(hope this helps the forum).

This story made me very xxxxxxxx...

Sounds pretty fun, I would definitely consider this if I had a facebook account.  It's a pretty good idea for a marketing promotion too.  Seems like they put some thought into this.

I agree the gameworld should be interesting and balanced to offer multiple alternatives but there will always be players who choose the path of least resistance, to optimize their leveling speed, so there will always be a best choice of where to hunt at any given level. I am not saying that is good or bad, it could be considered smart gameplay, but lag is a natural occurance when an area becomes saturated and it's a realistic result of depleting an areas resources and should not be seen as a bad thing that a developer should remove so players can continue to rape limited areas without consequences.

That is a perfectly fair arguement.  There is only one thing I can dispute and thats on raping limited areas without consequence.  You mention lag as a sort of natural occurance acting as a control to prevent "exploitation" of the best/easiest resources.  I can't argue that it would most likely have that effect, but there are already consequences before lag is considered.  Unless the zone is so huge and plentiful that a countless number of people can take advantage of it (not likely), the most optimized path easily becomes the most painful path because the plentiful resources are shared between such a large number of players.  A good example would be any game where group exp grinding takes place in public domain.  Quite often there is a camp considered the "best" camp for whatever reason it may be, and it is not rare to see more than one group try to crowd into such an area.  Usually in this situation it doesn't take long for conflict to arise.

To make it short, there should be other mechanics in place that force the players to move that take effect before the known networking limits are reached, preventing lag from ever becoming a problem.  Consider it a sort of balance between hardware limits and game design.  I think we can speak from experience when we say this isn't always the case, and sometimes a primary reason for moving to a new area is lag.

This is just a simpleton's theory though, feel free to point out any flaws in my logic.

Not to be rude but that term makes me want to stab myself.  Don't get me wrong Aion looks like it deserves the love but gaaahhhhh.  It was the term of the month for a while over on the TCoS board too.

I also think people are misunderstanding the video, atleast blowing it a bit out of proportion.  I've even seen people complain because of the overpopulated zone instancing.  You DO NOT want to play with over 500 other players in the same place, you may think you do, but you'll learn.  From what I understood, the game is instanced in areas that people will appreciate it.

I am really sorry, and I know I sound like a troll but..

I looked at this game closely, and it is alot like WoW with some improvements.

TCoS wont be aimed directly at WoW players. It will be casual and such, but it isnt aiming at WoW players like WAR is doing.

WAR can keep its players

No really this game doesnt need 10mil players to be succes full. No game does. Look at EVE with their 600k subscribers.

WoW players are part of the MMO market and thus, every newly released MMO partially aims at WoW players whether they intend to or not.

I'm also curious as to what parts of TCoS you think are similar to WoW.

I keep telling myself it's time to try out some magic user classes but just looking at the melee animations in this game it's impossible to decide.  I'm so used to every other MMO I've played where all 20 of my melee class' abilities share 3 different animations.  I'll probably just close my eyes and click on one...

It's way too soon after the TCoS Q2 launch announcement to conclude they will have to delay again.  I think people just say stuff to say stuff, unless of course they are privy to information we are not.

I would expect more from advanced or elite members to provide ample amount of information about their reviews on this game..

Potential

1. The inherent ability or capacity for growth, development, or coming into being.

2. Something possessing the capacity for growth or development.

And what did you see or do to make you think otherwise?  Why don't you tell us your secret?

By the way post count doesn't make you a better reviewer...

20Gb hard drive space huh...

Damn, what was I thinking when I partitioned an 80gb hard drive, more importantly why did I skimp so much on hard drive size when they are so cheap anyway...

I played for about a week during the open subscription event around the new year.  At the time I was running on a 7950GT, 3 gb of ram, and an AMD opteron 175. I could run on max settings but never got FPS over 30.  The game did run significantly smoother although I still noticed some hangs here and there.  I was on the pvp server with a new character and the low end population is definitely lacking.  I only played my level 40 for about an hour, and saw a total of 3 people around that desert city.  Mabye I'm not used to FFA PVP cities but it felt very empty for a hub with decent level range.  Perhaps they were all very stealthy or the hubs are a bit different than what I remember.  Chunking has improved although I was bit gun shy because of its old state.  I still experienced numerous crashes but no where near the number of the past.  The graphics are still a bit glitchy but the game still looks way better than any other game when settings are cranked up.

My conclusion is that the game has improved and is certainly playable, but still isn't as solid as some of its competition.  Expect some troubles with the game but nothing as extreme as mystery rollbacks, disappearing gear, or other game stopping bugs.

I do have to agree with the OP on the character creation/selection screen, it still makes me grimace.

*edit*

I should probably add the reason why I did not continue playing the game.  One day I experienced 3 crashes in a row trying to enter the game, but the real reason I decided the game still wasn't worth my money was because of the combat.  Exactly the same as every other MMO, it felt bland and boring, which would also explain why I am not playing for any other MMO at the moment.  I just made the decision after the crashing incident.  So technically, it' not entirely Vanguards problem.

I feel like there are games meant for consoles and there are games meant for PC.  Here is my opinion on how the genre should split.

PC:  MMORPG's, shooters, puzzle games, strategy

Console: RPG's, racing, action/adventure(like resident evil style games)

That being said PC games seem to just get recycled with better graphics everytime.  The trend is obvious in shooters even though they try to be "innovated".  MMO's seem to be blurring together.   How many different yet similar games have you played that are like the warcraft title.   I guess the same could be said about console games but atleast it seems like they've got a bit more creativity on their side.

I agree with a previous post though, its impossible for the PC to just dissappear in this situation, it would be much more likely that consoles will just meld into the PC market.   Just look at the new shift for consoles moving towards connectivity.  Eventually they will all be as on-line as any PC.  The only difference would be useability for work related applications.  Then again, why couldn't you use those applications?  Doesn't the PS3 run an OS like Linux or something?  Atleast I know you can load it onto the machine.  Mabye someday Sony will be a direct competitor with a company like Dell in the PC market.(I think sony woudl squash dell)

My original impression when they first posted this video on the tcos website was that it was shot at the same time as the 500 player stress test.  Mabye I happened to see the video and read the stress test article at the same time and mistakeningly came to this conclusion.  Judging by the general response of some of the other posters the two instances are entirely unrelated, but it is much more impressive to look at from my point of view.
