shill, much?

what does the word shill mean? and then i can answer.

It means you're advertising.  People come here to talk about MMOs, and whether your game is good, or terrible, discussions will naturally come up about it if it's notable.   While it may not be against forum rules, it certainly doesn't buy you cred to make "try my game posts" in a forum that's supposed to be about MMO discussion in general.

I see no problem with him posting about his game.  Why not?  I mean seriously, most people complain there is not enough interaction between the developers/publshers and the public.  Here's your chance to grill him.

They use a 3rd party PR agency for marketing/PR.  That firm feels it is enough to send out press releases to websites like this site and others like it.  It is not, but not much you can do about it.

The marvel MMO was axed.  Rather than waste all the work they put into making a superhero MMO they ripped out the marvel aspect, licensed Champions, and slipped it in.  Nothing uncomfortable about that at all.

The Dragonball MMO is expected to be announced for US release somewhere around the time it launches in Japan.  Doubt me?  Even though the show hasn't had a new episode in over a decade, the video games made based on it continue to sell strong.  On top of that, BandaiNamco is ALL about licensed properties and I expect them at the very least to publish it themselves or license it to an established MMO publisher.

Incorrect.  Cryptic is an independant developer.  They severed all ties to NCSoft (though they were independant already) and sold the rights to CoH/CoV a while ago.  They are in good financial shape and can pull this off fairly easily if all things that are right now stay the same.

Nice image, if it flies cool, if it runs around the ground probably kinda silly. I would like to see info on the classes. videos look decent enough I'm sure I'll give it a look. Haven't seen any info on MMOSITE?

We are still lacking detailed information on the classes right now as we have been focused on the translation of the game itself right now.  The website will be up very soon which will contain that.

And yes, Z will confirm that I'm working on the title ;)  Look forward to both of us posting here answering any questions that we are able to.

But seriously,  I loved atitd.com --- a 3D MMO unlike any others of its time, but the fact is the "successful/Popular" MMOs all share very similar qualites...the market wants what the market wants and that would be the EQ Clones we see today...though i guess we could say it is D&D clones...and you could probably go further back to where this type of play style came from, but I'm not that old.

Not only is this extremely confusing logic but an apparent cop out as well.

The fact that multitudes of games come out of Korea, China, and Europe which resemble WoW and EQ so closely it's as if they were reading out of a developers MMO cookbook, and aren't popular nor successful shows that your comment is false to begin with.  However, even if successful and popular MMOs did all share very similar qualities as you stated, there is no proof that those qualities are the reason they are successful and/or popular. The reality is, there hasn't been enough quality variations in this genre to even say what would be successful or not and on what merits success is attained.  I have seen very few trail blazing MMOs come out that were polished enough to compete, let alone gain popularity.  The only one which comes to mind is consistently debated as not even being an MMO, and that's Guild Wars, very much a success and very much different from the current model.

If and when a game comes along which is actually designed by competent, intuitive, and contemplative individuals, is polished, technologically competitive, and markets itself correctly, then, and only then, will we be able to compare and analyze the success of the current systems qualities.  I am pretty sure the numbers WoW has seen will be dwarfed by such a game.

No, I understand what you are saying. The Market is getting saturated with games of about 1 million dollar development budget, as opposed to wow with like a 20 million.

This trend shows no signs of stopping, but I can tell you the games will become better.  A little thing about the publishers you see now. Most  of them look for a proven title in Asia before investing into bringing to N.A. or Europe. In my opinion , i hate this idea. Why feed the US a game that has been sitting on the Shelf for 2,3, or even 4 years.

That's why at Zyon, we bring titles over no  more then  a year old. in Most cases we try to get them when they are still in beta.  It's more risk to us, but in the long haul i think it's the better choice.

I dunno, give us a chance. Maybe you can even have a hand in helping me pick out the next few.

Why feed the US a game that is almost identical in style and structure?  You want to claim risk about choosing another uncreative, fresh out the oven title and then speak of risk in the same response?  If you actually have the resources, the willpower, and supposed audacity, why not try to find what will destroy the current crop of MMOs.  It is coming, and those involved will make far more than Blizzard and Vivendi ever have off WoW.

You are in a position to make a decision that could not only bring you acclaim, but make you a real hero for years to come and while I would never ask anyone to take chances on a dream, there is no excuse for a well designed, unique, and appealing concept to not be brought to fruition.  If porting Asian titles is all you're about then I guess there isn't much use in attempting to convince you of other practical ideas.

If i could find a game like UO, I wouldn't be here talking to you I can tell you that much....
Rest assured I am constantly looking for that. I don't care if it wouldn't match up to today's market.

I think this contradicts almost everything you have stated so far.  Why would you bother looking for a skill based game like UO when it doesn't fit what you believe is the successful business approach?  The game wouldn't do as well according to your own logic, as in many ways it wouldn't follow the formula and would thusly be an unsound investment.  How on the one hand can you give reasons why you pick the games you do but then claim you would pick another style of game if it were available, more, a title that may not even fit the market trend?  I feel this is basic political pandering to the audience you see before you, and while logic and inconsistency might get by many on this site when they see titles like CEO thrown around, it's far too obvious to some of us that what you say and what you do don't mirror each other, not in this matter at least.

I have no problem with the idea that this is what is viable at the moment.  No one wants to take the chance because they aren't confident enough about their knowledge of the future direction of the genre.

The truth is, within the games industry this genre is one of the most open ended right now and potential profitable advances are absolutely ripe for the picking.  The fact that in this genre we have a dominating style, with very little variety, and any variety created is usually mediocre in substance and finalization, where only what needs to be done to compete is and anything extra is slated for patches and add ons, where productional practises which stifle creativeness, intuitiveness, and natural selection are not only the norm but the "trusted" developmental dogma, and those who actually do the work in creating, maintaining, and breathing life into these worlds are given the fragrant end of the stick while those in comfy offices who merely oversee proceedings take in 10-30 times as much, all adds up to an area with so much potential for corporate, developmental, and most importantly, creative growth with equal potential to absolutely consume the competition and become a financial and empirical juggernaut, whose shadow even Microsoft and the World Bank would be cowering in fear of, should force, at least some with the money, to make informed and intelligent decisions and do so with inventiveness and imagination in mind.

You sir, do not know anything of the Free MMO market.  Having been focused on that very same market now for 3 years I can tell you that ANYTHING that is free will attract players.  ALL games that come out now, free or subscription based, follow the EverQuest model.  There's a reason for it: it worked.

As for Z's comment about how he is still seeking a game similar to UO...I assume he means as a player.  as a businessman he knows where the money can be made, but as a player he seeks something similar to that.

Here we go again.

mmorpg.com can choose to accept ads from gold sellers because they charge extra money for them, thus raising profit margins.  Business is like that.  Maybe if someone sues a gold seller...like a game company, they can get a clear answer if this should be allowed or not.  { Mod Edit }

The price of RoK stand alone as well as RoK -All in One Pack is same. This is a normal procedure which all companies do that is they offer their old product with new on same price. This is also done to promote game as well as attract new players. If you have any issue regarding this I would suggest you to write a feedback email

Response (TSR Ben H.) 10/25/2007 12:34 PM
Hello,
We have decided to have the new expansion come with everything because in the past we had the expansion only and it would cost the same amount. The price for the expansion is the same that we have normally sold expansions for.

Thanks,

What is the deal I own 13 expansions and have paid dearly for those and that does not include the extreme price to play the game, and now you want to double charge for the new expansion. This is not right, and the glove offer is not going to get it. So you are trying to rip off the common player to who's gain. If you want me to quit playing just say so you don't upgrade the existing game, and turn out a level 80 game play area that those under 75 will never even see. All I want to know is where is the fair in fair marketing? I see no fair deal!!!when is it single price available. I don't want to pay for what I own again!!!

each time they respond with this reply the link they give you to respond go to a login that is broken and kicks you out every time. SOny has become a black hole of self praise and glory. while they Rip off the players you want to play and give them praise so be it they are off my play window after 7 years of play

Umm, the reason they put all expansions together with the newest one is so you do not have to hunt down copies of ALL them.  They are not charging EXTRA for all this, they are GIVING it FREE with the expansion.  Geez, SOE finally does something right and people still bitch, moan and complain about it.

You all with the "get over it" crusade, I might have agreed with you except SOE continues in the quest to massively change their games.  The C6 Combat Downgrade places a WoW type combat system in the game, creating lag to the max, many many bugs, and brought back the player base to about cl 50 in comparison to what was before.  Again all done in an overnight patch with very little advance notice to most of the player base.  When they have a thread, in their forums, of 67 pages of thier customers who do not like their "significant" change, as they call it, they again, like CUNGE, say nothing.  They continue to make these mistakes over and over and over.

I doubt I'll "get over it" anytime soon and I can understand why after 2 years others haven't "got over it" either.

Why must you people continue to be complete and utter ignorant idiots?  SOE LICENSED Star Wars from Lucas Arts.  The whole NGE was forced upon them by Lucas Arts, and changes continue to come from them.  Why does SOE put up with it?  Because SWG is still making them craploads of cash.  Not as much as WoW, but enough for them to stick with this, even with the hell that the old school players give them for it.

If you want old school SWG, look for the Emulation project that is so widely visible.  SOE can't open up "classic" servers because of the license, so quit holding out hope that by sitting around bitching, moaning and complaining enough will get you what you wish.

If you want a SIMILAR experience, with a Science Fantasy feel, try out Ryzom.  Not quite the same, but it will have to do.

SOE should be applauded for their charitable contributions rather than ridiculed because they made the game you loved something you now hate.

My money is that it is SOE's Free to Play "alternative business model" MMO.  They never released much info on it other than they expected to launch in 2007.  Time will tell, I'll be watching the webcast as I got the email too :)

When was the last time you played EQ2?  TONS of things have been added and changed since launch, and I actually feel it rivals WoW in terms of quality and fun now.  Again, one persons opinion who managed to pull himself off of the WoW bandwagon.

For instance: crafting is a minigame and not just a matter of waiting down a timer as the item is made.  PvP is balanced for the end game (though it makes leveling up on a pvp server frustrating early on depending on class).  The raids are not the 6-10 hour snoozefests like they are in EQ1 and WoW either.  Oh, and you have to love their introduction to raiding through the guild quests!  Lastly, there is no worrying about using the same 1 or 2 specs as everyone else.  With 100 AAs to choose from, and a ton of classes, you can actually feel unique for a change.

Double the faction would make the Outlands ridiculously easy to cap factions with then, and that is the only place factions matter.

Clandestine used to be huge, now it's down to around 60-120 players on at a time.  Definately fun, though I haven't played it in about 2 years.
