I know I've seen a couple threads about this, but they seem to mostly be lost in the piles and the search feature wasn't bring them up for me (I blame myself for lack of knowledge how to word it correctly to bring them up).

Several games only had minor things that were putting me off from playing them more (LoTRO for example), and I was wondering as a community, what games are people still playing to help pass the time?

I do get the feeling quite a few people will say DAoC, my questions are this:

Is there a way to change how to view, or get the cursor?
Are there updated graphics for it (EQ had Scars of Velius)?
At what level do things get interesting for RvR?
What servers still have communities of leveling people after so long?

What I have tried goes as follows:

Muds (several, and I still play some from time to time, mostly Materia Magica)

EQ (Played til GoD, the endless grind killed it for me, and the money costs).

EQ2 (Grind of EQ times 2, which fits the name)

WoW (Season 2-3 Arena gear killed it for me)

LoTRO (Played til 16 on 2 people, then lost interest)

TR (Played til 30 on 2 people, then it lost interest)

DAoC (Graphics were kind of low, but the big thing that killed it was the view controls. Having to hold down the mouse to get a cursor was a p.i.t.a., made it to around 10)

I've played others (E&B, EVE, etc), so you get the idea. I also took several breaks and played shooters to help keep the genre fresh (TFC2, Bioshock, CoD4, and thinking about getting Crysis).

Yes, which is why I was asking if you meant active or passive. I would think active only, since the question was more based towards that, but you gave a somewhat broken sentence as the answer to that part of the question.

Active: Food regenerates X health over Y Seconds.

Passive: Food lets you regenerate at normal levels, while being hungry reduces health regeneration by 50%.

Do you mean food that actively regenerated you, or just having characters well fed so they regenerated at max? I'm thinking about EQ and some muds where you had to keep your character fed, otherwise he regenerated for ****. :-)

I can remember many a times I got called away from the computer for several hours without warning, and I came back to my poor little guy (this only happened on my druid for some reason) would be completely starving for food and drink. Took me like 20 minutes to summon up enough to get him back to max.

What was the first game to have 3 different trees for player advancement? I honestly don't know if WoW was the first game to make it into 3 part like that. EQ and EQ2 are where most of my previous experience is (and of course mud's before that), and there it was just "You get these skills. Pick what you want and go away".

If WoW was the first, then that would make the first similarity between the two. The rest of the things they have in common simply come from being in the same genre. Oh look both have orcs and elves! Go figure for a fantasy game. A true fantasy game would have half the population as women, who were actual women. :-P

I'm personally going to play white lion, when/if it comes out, followed by a shadow warrior alt when I get bored. After that what ever class looks interesting and not often played.

I'd say that WAR isn't going to beta until the end of this year. Something seems to have gone wrong, but some credit for EA-Mythic at least addressing any problems BEFORE launch.

Enjoy your long wait folks by the way.

You're referring to an article posted in October 2007, in which beta did go down until December 2007, and then came back up. Congratulations on finding an article over 4 months old, and not following through to find out when it was posted.

Edit: Darn you for posting 30 seconds before me. :-P

eh, it's just taking remembering BBCode instead of HTML. :-)

Ironically, I'm like almost asleep, and while I scored high on the nerd tests, I can't figure out the coding process to display it properly. :-(

lol I give my friends answers if they ask but i dont' volunteer it.  As for the abundant can someone tel me the answer spammers in general chat I just ignore them unless it appears they've sincerely been trying to complete something.   These days it seems most people who ask haven't even tried they just logged on ask for answers so they can buzz through it...without actually experiencing the thrill of learning to do it themselves.

I won't ever be rude to that type of player but I never give them help either.  Its just bad form and sloppy play not to try first.  I think I very rarely asked for help in EQ1 and I was completely new to quests & large 3d worlds (having played UO & Gemstone 3 first).  But when I did I was polite in relating that I'd been trying for a while to figure out how to get back up to Kelethin (damn rail less platforms!) or that the system was new...it was nice when people obviously saw you trying in group and offered help.   Alot of that spirit is dead these days due to newbie abuse (newbies to MMOs that abuse our generosity with rudeness).

Of course...I'd never help the enemy..they're on their own if they're an enemy race rofl :)

I follow this exact approach when playing MMO's. I mostly just ignore the main channels, and talk to people I come across out in the wilds. The big draw back is when something like this comes back to bite you in the butt. For example, I tried LoTRO a while back, and I quit it before the free trial even ended. Reason being, I explored all of the starting dwarf and elf areas, then went over to the hobbit and human areas. What I was searching for was an area to level up past 16, since I was getting tired of all of the cyan and green quests. I spent the last two days of my trial period just trying to find an area, and every time I asked (after I explored, died, went back to town) where I should go, there was no answer. Granted, I did find several high level areas, ranging from 25-50, I never did find a good spot to quest at level 16. In that one sense, it's nice to have a website to indicate a general direction of travel since there was a total lack of in-game advice.

In that video, the gamma setting is up, the resolution is down, spell effects set to minimal, and etc etc. I don't know this for a fact, but compare that mutation video to:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SF4dSRIhyg

You can see how the mutations look with full spell effects on, with proper lighting and etc.

From the posts other people have made, on this website and others, I would agree that a White Lion would be the last class for the High Elfs. My question is (as stated in the title), where is there some White Lion lore to read up on?

Past experience, my main character in EQ was a Beastlord, for two main reasons. I liked the lore behind that idea (my character was a barbarian), and it was fun to play with a pet as a melee dps class.

In WoW, I played a hunter also for two reaons. Those being, the lore of the elves and the fact it had a pet class. The downside to this was all the stigma the "Legolas elves" caused by rolling hunters.

Also, I liked the micromanagement ability, to control 2 things at once. It adds in an element into strategy (send pet to attack one target while I go after one, then switch both over to the healer and burn them down) which I enjoyed. Plus, most people have a hard time focusing on what the pet and I are doing at the same time.

So this leads me to WAR, and I was somewhat elated to find out there would be an elf (I'm a fan of elves and barbarians) melee (always been fond of melee) pet class (sweet!). Now, all I need is some lore to read up on to get a good feel for the class. So, if anyone has a link, or a suggestion to a book, or something else, I would be deeply appreciative to get that.

Thank you for your time, and stay safe.

Seems that he only has 2 fingers and a thumb before the mutation. :-)

I just find it ironic that the add that came up when I viewed the link was "Chaos" (the movie, completely unrelated except for name).

Also, it would have been nice to see something other than a mutation and a few buffs. :-/

Anyone have an idea what the red text said?

My spanish is rusty and the screen is constantly blurry, but "El objetivo esta" would translante to "The target is (or is too)". The rest of it is way too blurry to try and figure out.

"El objetivo esta fuera de alcance"

. . .

The target is out of scope... Guess they need more mouth wash? :-D

Thats probably why EQ will be my all time favorite MMO, because it was like living in a true D&D world. Players actually grouped on a regular basis and raids, no matter how long they took, always seemed to be fun. You also had to WALK everywhere and EQ was not a small world. EQ is probably the closest thing to what a TRUE MMORPG should be.

Games like WoW and CoX and Eve Online are still fun, but you will never see the comradre of guildmates like you do in games like EQ, EQ2 and LOTRO. I'm sure the other games still have dedicated gamers and guildmates, but it's not of the same caliber as EQ.

MMORPGs are entertainment, not just a game you play to pass the time, but a world to explore, adventure and achieve glory and fame. I will never choose an FPS style MMO as the best MMO ever made because it feels too robotic and static.

I'll take original EQ style gameplay of long walks, huge zones and great game backstory over anything about graphics and PvP.

There was also an element of EQ which I believe is making it into WAR in a sense. When you hit level 51 in EQ, you gained the ability for "Alternate Advancement", which gave you new abilities based on how you placed those points.

I personally found this to be a better idea than the talent points, simply because they were not capped as to how far into it you could go. It added to the element of how powerful your character was, instead of just having a cookie cutter talent build such as in WoW. It also was a feeling of pride, to say "I gained 300 AA points", since it wasn't something everyone could easily do, versus tossing 51 (or 61) points into random slots and saying "I'm ____ spec".

Unless I am mistaken, part of this will be from the Tome of Knowledge. The more you explore the world and conquer it, the more skills and abilities that become available to you. I believe there is another game mechanic of this type (aside from character mastery points), which adds to it as well, but I could be wrong.

Edit: To clarify, the reasons I am fond of the idea of Alternate Advancement would be because it was yet another option for people who were at or near the max level to still improve their character outside of raiding.

One other thing that would be nice to see would be an epic style quest for each career once they get near max rank. After playing EQ (65 BST, 65 MNK, 65 DRU, 61 RNG - Quit at GoD, too many paid expansions) and WoW (70 Hunter, 70 Druid, 70 warrior, 70 Rogue - Quit, lack of meaningful content), I still refer to my time in EQ as much more enjoyable. Reason being, the quests seemed to matter more, and had actual results. Plus, I always did my class epic quests for my characters, and in WoW, they seemed too short and easy, while in EQ seemed more epic. :-/

Also the fact people had to think more in EQ. Corpse retrieval used to be an epic adventure in itself. :-)

As already stated, you currently have 90 votes. There are over 500,000 people signed up for beta alone. Trying to figure out the balancing issues from such a small portion is the same as matching one lotto ticket number. You're on the right track, but you have a long way to go before you get it all.

Just to clear up something, the melee dps classes in WAR will not be wearing medium armor.

Taken from the official Marauder class description: "Barbaric, medium-strength armor."

Taken from the official Hammerer class description: "Well armored in medium weight armor"

Its variable. Different melee DPS classes play differently from other melee DPS classes.

I don't deny that fact. I am just merely pointing out from the August 2007 podcast where it lists the archtypes and specifically says "Armor: Heavy" (and etc) as I posted before. I also remember from a few interviews that the melee dps were described as wearing "light" armor, which is how they are able to chase down the ranged/support fighters for the kill.

If it does turn out to be medium instead of light, I'm all for it. I'm pretty sure my first character will be a melee dps class (still can't decided on where though), followed by a ranged, then support. :-)

Tanks - Heavy
Support - Medium
Melee DPS - Light
Ranged DPS - Extra Light

As for the dual weilding ones, I believe they all dual weild (to some degree). The high elf has yet to be announced, and the witch hunter I am unaware of (pistol in one hand, sword in another seems to be the general idea, but not sure about ranges and such), but the rest seem to all have the ability to use 2 melee weapons at once.

The rank of the character does matter, since the receive skills based on what rank you currently are. The higher the rank, the more powerful the skills are, the more effective you become.

I also enjoy the fact there are 4 tiers of game play, but this game is still mostly focused on end game playing. With several podcasts, they have stated that while the lower tiers are fun and full of fighting, questing, and everything else to keep you content in the game, the main focus of the game opens up and becomes available in tier 4 game play (a.k.a. city sieging).

Also, just from previous experience (since on the topic of leveling), the majority of the leveling experience for the power leveling group (the ones who hit max level/rank first) will be to quest. While EAMythic has stated that you gain experience from PvE and PvP, they also stated that both catagories have quests to do in such areas. Combine that with the stated fact that you will level fastest participating in both areas (PvE/PvP), quest experience seems like it will be the best experience per time for leveling. Although, I'll be content to just do the PvP quests while I'm out slaughtering all those people. :-)

see, i can also give examples that don't prove anything. It will be out when its ready, but sometime during the summer seems reasonable.

What you are failing to comprehend are the given examples show two games which were both hyped up, and released within a month of each other. As anyone can guess, one of them is doing extremely well, while the other just getting by. The point to giving those two as examples is to prove that just because two games share a similar launch time with a similar style, as long as one is better made, the masses will move there.

Also, I'm not trying to say one is better than the other, just stating unbiased facts. I beta-tested and played EQ2 and WoW. I personally would have stayed with EQ2, except at launch they almost doubled the experience needed per level, and reduced all player damage by half. Considering I had just quit EQ because of the insane amounts of time it took to solo level (thanks to the fact the server was void of new characters), I switched over to WoW full time.

The unlucky part is I've quit WoW, and yet still trying to get into beta for AoC and WAR to compare the two. I go out and get a nice gaming computer, and then have to run the old games to help pass the time until I get something to really test it on. Although, I think I might go grab Crysis as a time sync, since I've already beaten CoD4 and Bioshock.
