@ Bio' Absolutely not man, I am and have been a huge fan of Bioware but the entire industry will not die it will just drag on for another 5+ years to get us out of this horrible 'Attack of the Clones" phase. |

Listen, I'm all pins and needles until the official reveal but the 'fate of MMO's is upto Bioware'? Umm, that's one hefty responsibilty to put on their shoulders. Let's leave it at the fate of SW as a marketable Ip in MMO land. |

I've read Q&A and I like it a lot. People have very different ideas about their prefered playstyles and types of MMO's, Earthrise is my kind of game. Bring it on! |

Well, I'll post my standards to see if they are anything like the rest of yours. I just posted this in the Cryptic STO forums, Ten Forward- SWG refugee thread a little while ago. Although a 100$ per month is pushing the bounds of reality, I'd go as high as 30$ for a sub'. to something decent for a change. Note- just replace/ignore 'Cryptic' and 'STO' when they're mentioned and use "Mythical MMO Dev/Pub' team and game"... What do I miss about SWG? As a 'pre' through 'post-CU' player that felt forced to leave SWG on the day of the NGE, I miss almost every aspect of what SWG once was. ...The IP itself, that truly drove the sense of a tactile gaming community, the sheer depth to the game that was only limited to the players goals(character development, personal vehicles, housing, etc..), the diverse server economy that made crafted/gathered items worth crafting or gathering, in the first place, and the sense of accomplishment while chasing the dream of becoming a jedi or practically anyother elite character mastery, in the game. - 'Oh! Yeah! I 'm almost there!'...
That it's huge in scope, that it's fun and that I'll want to play for years, is the short answer. The more complete answer is along these lines; -That it will keep me interested longer than the free 30days gameplay that comes with buying the box. -That it won't turn into just another unpopular one-quarter wonder in the released MMO universe. -That it somehow manages to find the near mythical middle ground that will satisfy the casual, the hardcore, the soloist and the group oriented gamer, all at the same time. (ie- Scope and depth.) -That it's true to ST canon but is not afraid to add to it! (ie- Statement--'That ship class wasn't part of canon!'...Answer-- 'Only because ST never got that far in it's timeline, until now that is!') -That it is an actual MMORPG, not a diluted MMOG which only caters to those with attention span of your average coffee cup. -That the player character's, the ship's and the npc crew's skills and setups noticeably influence the players pve/pvp usefulness and ingame presence. ...(This helps exploration, crafting and socialization come back to the fold of the mainstream and drives the player economy. It also does great things in longterm consumer loyalty.) -That players who want to explore, craft and/or socialize are rewarded just as much as those who want nothing more than to non-stop pvp throughout the game. -That the real endgame only exist when you cancel your sub'. or Cryptic pulls the plug on the servers.
I realize all those points have been said many times over but the more I look at it these are the things that many disatisfied MMO consumers want and miss about true MMORPG's. Ah Darkfall?, STO?, KotORO/SW:tOR? .../hope .../sigh |

Originally posted by Graff Actually, Cryptic was working on concept and design for STO one full year before PE had to call it quits. That's right, whether it was the hint of blood in the water or the result of mystical visions. Cryptic had begun work on STO without the IP's license and then stepped in to buy it the moment it was available. Cryptic is also using their own game engine for STO. So, it's ground up development but Cryptic does own the full rights to PE's work as part of the deal and some similarities between the two companies versions are inevitable... Like the fact that in STO there will be space combat. ...Umm, well yeah! |

Well, it shouldn't be. Near the end of the ST liscense being PE's hands. The game they described was pure ship combat without character avatar's, away missions, ship interiors or wandering through space stations. ..All space and no ground components. They went on to say that it would be so complex as to be near impossible to create the 2 styles, side by side, for a single title before a launch. Atleast, with Cryptic the plan is for both to be developed and have a more complete ST package released. So, that's why I feel they're development ideas for ST are much better than PE's approach, IMO. It just has the making of a more complete, involving, rich and detailed game, overall. |

Well, I already know that I'm playing it when it's released. It promises more of what I feel ST was always about than PE's 'vision' ever did. The first trailer gave me a hopeful outlook for the game. EVE it's not but if it can be precise in it's attention to scale and perspective, it might make up for some of the misgivings that I have with many artistic styled games. As long as, a shuttle is small against the backdrop of a Galaxy class ship, a Borg cube/Space Station dwarfs all other starships and there's no human character with a head 5 times to big for it's body complete with clown feet. It will do just fine. |

I just registered my pre-order key today(about 2hrs ago). At first, I ran into the same issue, 'all sold out'. I have no idea why but I decided to check back about 20mins later. I hit the early access link, like I had done before, and this time it let me sign-up and it billed my CC. The only other thing I did was that I lowered my sub cycle then I hit early access. I changed my sub cycle back to what it was, after the early access went through. I don't belive anything I did with my subscription plan really did anything. I'm just saying what I did. Again, I don't know why it let me after it said it was sold out but it may be worth checking/trying again for anyone that cares to. I thought the May 2nd date was for EU pre-order registrations only and that NA/Oceania reg's were supposed to start today. IDK!?! Anyhow, GL!

No, they're not going to canel WAR, the product and the player-base is there, ready and willing. I agree with others that WoW is the game that will, finaly, feel a bit of a hit in subs. Nothing drastic but X-mas just won't be the same for Blizzard as it has been, based solely on WoW. They'll make up the financial loss between Wotlk xpac and Star'2. But, they will be facing longterm competion and it will get worse as more releases hit the market from here on out. Originally posted by bluealien1They said things like this in Dev vids and the Hyborian insider but every time it was spoken, they were refering to the combat system, not the RPG content of Tortage and all the other pve/pvp/crafting/solo/group play content, from login on. @ OP It's neither and it's a blend of both, at the same time. It's not a classic MMORPG, due only to the combat system, and not a true MMOFPS(eventhough, there's the feel of twich'er game), there's still classic MMORPG calculations running in the background determining hits/misses/damage and heal amounts based on your stats and feats. |

lol Drewg, What are you trying to run - Dune2000 and Atari's greatest hits? I thought I was pretty bad trying to see if Vista would still run LA's Rebellion, circa '96-'97, the only app that I have that won't run. I've got 11 games installed and already played through the other 7 I have, + all the MMO's I've ever tried, + the 9 games I just sold back to EB/GS to pay off last little bit for the AoC CE, not 7 days ago. Only two, took a single step more than the right click 'run as admin', which was 'run in xp service pack 2 mode'(on the 'exe' and burden of the second file the 'launcher', KoTOR 1 & 2. As for security, yeah there's better(Kaspersky is great), but I surf and still run the same online games as most of you, with no problems.
EDIT-- Sorry, just can't leave this, yet. Other than this thread, I've not heard of AoC taking 2.5gigs of ram. The highest report, until then, was 1.8gigs(with an un-opimized client). Since Vista, itself, will account for 1-1.5 gigs, due to ram pre-cahcing(-the attempt at lessoning the need for the use of the virtual pagefile system by loading your most used apps into memory, at every startup-) just running the desktop, with Aero. --- Then the game, that now, can exceed the 1.8gigs previously reported, leaves you, simply, stressing your 3Gb of ram system, just trying to play the game. And, your now dependant on the virtual pagefile to get you through it. End result -- Your game will suffer, not do to the vid card or the cpu but because of the lack of ram, forcing the system to use the swapfile. - 4GB's of ram is better than 3GB's and a 64bit OS, on a 64bit proc., runs really well, from POST on through. However, I do believe the beta clients are running with a higher need of system resources, than the the retail client will need. Why? Because, they added the bugs for benefit of the stress testing on the servers, requiring more than what will be needed at release. |

He is right about the older hardware, though. It's Vista certified hardware for best performance. I ran Vista 32bit, on this very system, for over 6months before I made the switch. I noticed an obvious improvement right from the start and I have had no issue since. EDIT-- I don't use IE 64bit, though. I'm running Norton 360 and it only does phising for the 32bit IE, it's not an issue to me, the only other thing that Norton 360 doesn't support in 64bit is weak password scans, everything else works perfect(firewall, virus scan, system scans). Oh, and Vista 32bit seemed to run DX10 for me without an issue, in LoTRO. |
