The story line takes place during the GCW. There should be no Jedi. They are gone. There are plenty of force sensitive people but no Jedi. Sorry I can't feel like I'm immersed in the war between the Rebellion and the Empire when you have a bunch of Jedi running around. Like I said above, I didn't even play before the NGE. I'm offering an objective perspective and the fact is that the game is broken in a lot of parts, they alienated their dedicated player which SOE loves to do for some reason, and instead of fixing problems and giving some good content we get stuck with voice chat and perhaps the stupidest game update title in the history of gaming: The Return of the Meatlump King" OY veh. Look what SOE did with the Living Legacy promo. They give 2-3 months of game time plus access to all the expansions to disloyal players that have left the game. The dedicated players got two things: Jack and Shit, and Jack left town. People playing the game for a while and supporting it should get some recognition. This is just another example of SOE not caring about their customers. There is no need for blind defense. I call it like I see it. |

I tried the game about a year ago and at first I enjoyed it. I never played the game before the NGE so I didn't have any animosity per se. I am a huge Star Wars fan and obviously the IP is the main reason I checked the game out. While I enjoyed the game at first a few things started to bother me. While I actually like the combat system and the overall atmosphere of the game. The planets are huge. It's actually one of the biggest games I have come across. The game just doesn't feel right. They have gutted the game twice and there is all this old code floating around. So what you have is the new game built right on top of the old game. So a lot of things just don't quite work right. Another thing is the game is not very friendly to the new player. The tutorial station gives you a good idea about the game but you get no real help in starting a pilot career, building ships, crafting, or the beast master system. No real class or faction specific quests. You just have the stupid Legacy Quest which is fine until you start your 4th or 5th alt and have to do the same damn thing. The only other way to level up is to grind and that takes foooooreeeever. The game is ok but i felt that I could not in good conscience pay any more for it. I play EQ2 and City of Heroes. i am not an SOE hater and i don't have a problem with EQ2. I just wish they would push and advertise it more because it is a pretty good game. One last note. I am damn near insulted over the addition of the voice chat. Of all the damn things that could be done to improve this game they put in a damn voice chat?!? Maybe back before the servers were dead but this is just useless. I refuse to give this game any more time. It's broken and they don't want to fix it. |

I'm not name calling anyone, I'm making a true statement. If someone is being an asshole then that's what they are. No name calling required. The point of my post is not to label the entire community. It is to call out those players, and there are quite a few of them, that have this elitist attitude. It tends to be more common with a lot of the so called "veterans". As if the world owes them something just because they played since launch. And the "attitude" that you are refering to, this is not an attitude that is expressed in game. It is a reaction from my observations of the game. I was just on a few minutes ago and two level 20 characters said they were looking for a group. The reply they got was "You are a group" How shitty is that? As the thread title says. It's not the entire community that is elitist. But the elitist community that does exist will be the downfall of the game. |

No, by horsing around I mean I don't play the game all that regularly. When I do play I just do a couple of quests and maybe craft a little bit. Your little buddies in Virtue suck. Why would you invite someone to a group and then not mentor them so they can get xp? Also the majority of people that invite others to groups don't even share loot or set the new group members in the lottery.
Use their guild to power level their toon? They invited her. So screw you and your Virtuous asshat buddies. |

Oh yeah, try joining a guild that doesn't want to cyber rape you or isn't a vampire sex cult. I know some of you have heard the phrase: "To the furs!" |

Dude, just read the chat. Also what is the name of the Guild you joined? I like this game and she likes it a lot, I'm not trashing the game. I'm saying that if people continue to be assholes, especially to new players then that will be the downfall of the game. You've only been playing for a week so you really don't have a perspective here. Just log on and read the general chat. They are all a bunch of pricks. I'm not saying all players are like this but as you can see from the replies on this thread I'm not totally off base here. |

Ok. What server do you play on with all these helpful people? What channell? What guild? I don't beleive for one second you played CoH for four hours and no one helped you. It's really funny you conveniently just happened to have played both games I meantioned, but had opposite experiences with the two. Sign on to EQ2 right now, create a new a character and ask for help. You'll be laughed off the chat. Sign on to city of heroes right now...within minutes someone will broadcast LFT. Or just ask how to get to Striga Isle. You'll get about 5 answers right away. Sign on to eq2 and ask how to get to neriak, they'll tell you to find it where it always is...your ass. What server are all these nice people on? Perhaps you can point me in their direction. Until you prove me wrong, it's dead in the water. Elitist pricks they remain. |

Well, you are talking about two completely different games here. Apples and oranges really. Guild Wars is an online game with multiple players, but it is not a true mmo. You meet up with other players in the towns and outposts but once you leave to do quests it instances your party. So you don't encounter anyone while you are out exploring the countryside. That being said it is a very good game with a lot of choices for your character and many skills to choose from. There is also no monthly fee and you can pick up the original game for about 30 or 40 bucks. There are also three seperate campaigns with different storylines. You can buy and play these in any order. In addition to that they have the Eye of the North expansion. Vangaurd is a huge game. Their attempt at a persistent world was maybe a little too ambitious. You're also looking at some steep system requirements and 20 GB of hard drive space for install. I've seen lots of reports about the game getting better but for the price I would try Guild Wars and if it's not for you then move on to another. You could also try Lord of the Rings or EQ2. Both of which have trials.

So my girlfriend plays this game and I drop in occassionally to horse around. The attitude of the community, especially towards new players is horrible. The Antonia Bayle server is where we chiefly play. If you try to ask a simple question, you get a smart ass comment. Just today she was grouping with some level 70's on her low level alt and they were farming the void storms. These assholes wouldn't even mentor her so she could get xp. Oddly enough they were in the guild Virtue which advertises themselves to be a new player friendly guild. it's this sort of elitist attitude that will ultimately cause players to leave. As a point of contrast, the community in City of Heroes is great. No problem finding groups, everyone is helpful. I guess you just have long time players that think this is "their" game and don't want others to piss in their cheerios. But the established community should welcome new players and help them out a little. It makes a positive impression on the game and will only keep more coming in. As it stands now the EQ2 community is a bunch of pricks. |

I had a similar problem after installation. Oddly enough i had this problem with SWG as well. You have to tweak the administrator settings. Set it to run as admin, also try setting the emulation to windows xp or 2000. Also when you run the game, right click and select run as admin. Play around with it a little and it should work. Again I had this same problem but i got it resolved. Oddly enough it has only happened with the SOE games. Go figure, lol. |

It is true that fantasy is a mainstay of the rpg genre, so fantasy is here to stay. But take a step back and look to the bottom left at the games in development. Aion: Fantasy based but seems to have a different twist. Champions Online: Superhero. Hopefully it will be a worthy successor to my current game of choice City of Heroes. Spellborn: Fantasy Darkfall: Fantasy Earthrise:Sci Fi/Apocalyptic Fallen Earth: Sci Fi Huxley: Sci Fi/FPS Jumpgate: Sci Fi Requeim: Again, technically fantasy but I like the horror twist SUN: Fantasy Stargate Worlds: Sci Fi with a peppering of fantasy Warhammer: Fantasy but based on a very strong franchise. So as it turns out, the future may not be so bleak for all you fantasy haters. |

Actually it's been fairly balanced. That is what boards like this are for, sharing opinions. I agree that it may be a good, fun game but I think the issues that have been raised are important. Never mind how fun the game is, how would you feel if you put a lot of time and effort into building something with your guild only to have it disappear and support does nothing about it? The fact is that there are huge amounts of the game that need worked on. Issues that should have been fixed in beta, but it seems like Funcom didn't really beta test. They just let people play. They didn't even facilitate people reporting problems. Like others have said, there is no way in hell I am paying Funcom to beta test their game. Once it has been polished up I will give it a try. Until then, there are not getting my money. |

Hey glad you had a good time. I've been playing for about 4 months now and I'm having a blast. There's a certian portion of the gaming community that CoH really appeals to. I think a lot of us are looking for something to break the mold from the fantasy genre. Sure there are some decent sci fi mmo's but CoH is one of a kind. Graphics, while a little dated, still give me that comic book feel. I just upgraded to a mid range video card (8600 gt) and I think the game looks georgeous. Nice effects on the powers and the zones have a nice polished look. As far as missions go. Your first contacts will get you started. Once you pass the level they can offer you they will refer you to more. Doing missions through contacts is the best because you can complete story arcs. You get a big xp bonus when you complete one. Plus you can get all kinds of really cool temporary powers. Ice armor was my favorite. There are also task force missions which are similar to small raids where you need a certain number of heroes, from 3 to 8 depending on level. Personally, my biggest con is the repetitive missions. But this is balanced by the fun factor and the satisfaction of watching your character grow in power. Champions still has a while to come out so I would recommend buying a retail key and trying out your free month. A big thing you probably did not experience in your trial is the growing of your character. It gets really addictive once you start getting extra powers and enhancement slots. Let me know if you give it another try. I play on Pinnacle. |

Actually EQ2 is a pretty good game. The newer expansions are considered some of the best content they have had and Rise of Kunark is the highest selling expansion they have. I checked out EQ and couldn't get past the character creation, it is just too dated for me. But I enjoy EQ2. Crafting is fun and there is a ton of stuff to do. As far as SOE is concerned they really screwed up with SWG, but I didn't play pre NGE so I don't have the sour taste in my mouth like the vets do. EQ2 is a good game. Planetside has run its course but was good back in the day. Matrix Online has potential but the Matrix is old news now, and they need more than two people working on the game. Vangaurd has had its troubles but if you read the Vangaurd forums the game is starting to turn around. Lots of people are buzzing about The Agency. The fact is that the President of a company has very little to do with small day to day operations. Their job is to look at the big picture and make money for the shareholders. I don't care who publishes a game, if I like it I play it. |

Playing CoX mainly. My girlfriend plays EQ2 so I have a few toons on there as well. I'd love to get in the beta test for Champions online. I'm a stickler for the comic book theme. If CoX had just a little more depth it would be the best game ever. I'm hoping Champions can step up to the plate. |

It's actually funny that you meantion this. My girlfriend plays EQ2 and yesterday we were out and about and decided to pick up the new Ris of Kunark expansion. I had seen it at Circuit City before but they didn't have any this time. So I checked at Gamestop. I'm not sure why I bothered but I did. Of course they didn't have it. Gamestop is nothing but a WoW shrine. I hate those little pricks in there. Is it me or is every single Gamestop clerk a pretentious, WoW playing smart ass? Anyway best thing to do is order a box copy online. |

I think some of you are missing the op's point. He got banned for posting that message. Sounds to me like he struck a nerve. All of you are saying, "Well that's just the way games work." But what he is saying is that maybe everyone should not be so complacent. He is pointing out the fact that the QA teams should have noticed a lot of the glaring issues. One issue that is just totally unforgiveable. Load screen camping, WTF. I'm not one to whine about being ganked but when you are just defenseless and get it just because you are going in to a new area, that is just plain wrong. There is nooooo way they missed that going in to launch. Would it not be hard to have a 30 second invulnerability when loading. Problem solved. Now are you really going to give money to what is supposed to be a professional company making a quality product? |

Just to throw in my personal experience. I bought a $550 laptop from circuit city mainly for my girlfriend to play EQ2 on. I'm sure it's a matter of perception but she thinks it runs great and I think it does just fine myself. We also play it with our wireless connection. Now i'm sure with your higher grade system you are expecting better performance than what you are getting. Like I said, I'm sure it's a matter of perception. We are not really sticklers for monitoring framerates and things like that. Anyway just wanted to share my personal xp. As far as performance after the newbie island it may be a little better. I also suspect that the game's code is not written to take advantage of the full power of your system. The PC we play on is an Acer Aspire 5720z. 1.6 dual core, 2gb ram, 358mb integrated card. I just let it run on the default settings which is the very high performance preset. |
