I've pre-ordered the Collectors Edition and I'm still looking forward to it. But the game certainly has a couple of flaws. It's mostly where Funcom decided to stick with tried and true methods that I'm disappointed (like how they handled their raiding...very traditional, with all the usual potion/gear grinding horrors).

Don't be fooled, there's a lot more to this game than the fatalities and nipples which are so often discussed. An MMO with a good story, highly immersive setting and great art direction.

There's more than just the gore!

I don't mind paying the extra bit of money, but the CE is all sold out where I'm looking

After a slow start, I kinda liked the quest ("mission") system in City of Villains. What I enjoyed most is that you were almost always following a single story-arc at a time, rather than just accepting and completing quests by the dozen. I'm not going to bother reading the quests when they're offered to me 20 at a time. City of Villains made me do my 'quests' one at a time. Gamewise, the quests weren't that interesting though.

There's been a lot of praise for Age of Conan's quests, but since the game isn't out yet...

If there's some sort of  "We advice you to play on this server" mechanism, never let it point to a Roleplaying server.

In addition bring up a pop up when selecting a Roleplaying server, that warns players that there are additional rules on this server and that it isn't a "normal" server. Give them a "Do you really want to play on a Roleplaying server? Yes/No" or "Do you accept the additional Roleplaying rules? Agree/Don't Agree" option.

Seriously, throw us roleplayers a bone

WoW is easy to learn, moderate to master.

But you know, people...they want you to believe that that special type of MMO they're playing is way more advanced and hardcore than yours. They want to convince you they're part of the elite. Just ignore it. The fact that they're so loud about it only means they know most people don't agree with them.

I'm actually looking forward to the city building...that's still in right?

Mostly I will be listening to www.youtube.com/watch

That's EXACTLY what I'll be listening to. BEST song ever. Been listening to it for a while, actually.

Seriously. Rick Astley

We are in agreement. I prefer Mr. Astley to a lot of the 'angry' music listed in this thread, though I guess music like that can help get in the right combat mood

I'm just happy that not every developer has gone the route of WoW and aimed at the lowest common denominator to bring in a larger player base.  They seem to be really into what they are doing and trying to bring something new to the genre so while I am hopeful that they succeed i'm sure there will be some let downs and kinks to work out at release.

Just don't get your hopes up to much about what the game is going to be like at launch, but instead about what they are trying to do with it and where it could go.

That's exactly what I'm trying to do ProfRed (focussing on where the game could go). I'm not really expecting much content...only a few zones and quests, very limited city building, unbalanced classes, etc. As long as the basics are there, I can wait.

Darn, I'm getting my hopes up. Almost everything I've seen and heard about this game is great! I've heard nothing but praise over the combat system, graphics and quest design. I'm personally really looking forward to city-building and keep battles.

I'm almost counting days, I have an Age of Conan wallpaper, etc. Not good! With such high hopes, I'm almost sure to set myself up for some disappointment, seeing how MMOs usually fare right after release .

Anyone else getting his/her hopes up?

A arrogant man has no eyes or ears that see or hear truth, they only hear and see the truth he wants.

Arrogance? Really? Heh. You probably mean something else, or perhaps that 'saying' should be used in a different context.

As for people seeing/hearing what they want to see...that's common knowledge. Don't think yourself immune either .

There's just no reason to dismiss a game before you've played it.

You can read all the signs and make all the predictions you want. I don't see the benefits of doing so. Just be patient.

In my circles the Bear Shaman seems to be the most popular pick. People are just drawn to a warrior/healer, because it gives them the best of both worlds. They're so self-reliant, perfect solo classes. And in teams you can do a bit of both, not getting too bored of just a single role.

I'd roll a Bear Shaman myself, but I think they'll be too common. Same for the Stygian Mage classes. I'll probably pick a Priest of Mitra, Tempest of Set or Guardian.

Your attitude towards MMOs is disturbing.

The things you mentioned are things that defines an MMO.

Maybe you should go play singleplayer games?

And to answer your question; Obviously yes!

Eh? I like these things, I want them to be in there, but I don't think it's a given...

You say stuff like this defines an MMO...well, I wish that were true. The MMO audience is changing, many don't give a rat's ass about RP. WoW made this genre mainstream, and lured in many people with an RTS, FPS or console/action RPG background. New MMO developers are going with the trend, with games like WAR proudly proclaiming "this is war!" "war is everywhere!" "no daisy-picking during war!". Phrases the rabid fans are happy to echo if you ask about inns or housing.

So I got worried for Age of Conan. A lot of this game's marketing revolves around its action-paced combat. But will it have stuff for us immersionists as well? Stuff that's totally useless mechanics wise, but helps to make the world come alive?

RP, PvP, city-building, resource-gathering....heh, that's the top of my wish list as well :)

It seems to be an unholy combination though. PvE and RP often go hand-in-hand, and PvP-focussed games are quick to sacrifice "pointless" aspects like resource-gathering.

LotRO for example does pretty well on the RP front, but is definitely a classical PvE game, with lots of quests and endgame raiding.

Age of Conan seems to have city-building, resource-gathering and PvP, but it's frequently marketed as more of an "action RPG" than a mmorpg. I fear world immersion and RP are at a low priority in this game.

Still, AoC does seem to have it all in theory...now let's wait to see how it turns out.

You know: emotes, good quest stories, places to hang out and socialize, stuff that serves no 'real' purpose except make the world more immersive?

Like many have said: You'll be fine with medium to high settings (though it's impossible to say for certain at this point).

Off topic: Don't forget to upgrade to a minimum of 2 Gb system ram, if you haven't already. This will help a lot.
