Think about this, when were all the good games released? In the beginning. Ok. When have most of the crap games been released? After WoW.
I don't care if there is one game on the market (and there always will be at least 1 game) as long as it's a good game. The Genre will keep going forward. Ever since WoW hit the scene the genre has actually been moving BACKWARDS as far as content and gameplay are concerned. Everyone wants to make the next WoW, but what they don't realize is that there may NEVER be another WoW and if there is it will only be after the 10mil subscribers get bored with the game, years and years from now.
Everyone now is trying to compete with WoW, a very simplistic game that will draw in the most people. Nobody cares about gameplay now, they only care about subscribers. They use an X + Y / Z formula to get the subsribers that the mathematicians at Blizzard created.

You've got it backwards...content and gameplay has increased dramatically since UO. Considering EQ, UO and AC had basically zero content, had lousy control, UIs and had gameplay designed to stretch out every play session and slow down advancement to a crawl...the genre has moved forward quite a bit. Its the old vets who can't let it go already and realize just how badly designed the original MMOs were.
People are allowed to be picky now, because we have options. Back with the original 3, there were few options. Which buggy unfinished game did you want to play back then, because they all had problems that current gamers won't tolerate now.

If Dark & Light or Vangaurd were released in 99, they would be successes. Now they're deemed failures. Wonder why?

You make a good point, but when I say content I mean as far as things you can do. Think about what all you could do in EQ and try to see if you can do it in WoW... It's not there. Same thing with AC and UO, they had much more to do in the game than WoW does. WoW has two options: Raid or PVP Grind. Crafting is there, but completely pointless.

Also, you only focused on one word "content". What about gameplay? Some of the things you hit on are not restricted to the MMO Genre, but all games in general. Gameplay plays an important role for me in games. I like games that challenge my mind, not just numb it. In the current crop of MMOs a mind numbing experience seems to what they go on and thrive on. I understand I'm not a normal gamer, I see things in games that 90% of the general non-gamer population sees and I want things they don't want. I understand that. But there are happy mediums, which are not being put out at the current time.

Content and Gameplay kinda go hand in hand as well. Sure, some of these MMOs have lots of places to go, but big deal. That's not content, that's filler. Content, to me, means somewhat of a sandbox... even if the game isn't considered a sandbox. Back in UO, I could come up with all kinds of things to do and was happy. In WoW there are just a handful, I mean I can do lots of things but the game has evolved to where those things just don't matter. WoW should have been a spectacular game, the Original Designers had alot of great ideas, the bad thing is that the game has got nothing more than a spectacular amount of subscribers. But, that alone doesn't mean it's a good game. NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys sold many MANY more records than copies of WoW, I don't find them good and I've never found anyone willing to admit that they like them.

IMHO, the greatest thing WoW has brought to the Genre is a playable game on most systems. Unfortunately, most developers don't see this key feature of the game. I can play WoW on my Laptop, my friends laptop from 2003, or even my grandpa's computer he bought in '01 (with a simple RAM Upgrade, trust me... I played it on it).

The problem with alot of these games is that fact and that fact alone. I played Vanguard and I LIKED IT! But the problem lies in the fact that when I got around other people my computer lagged way down. And that was my gaming machine. I'm in the Army and spend most of my time on my laptop that's no where near the power of my game machine.

In short, I hope every game for the next 3 years is a complete and utter failure. Then maybe they will start thinking about creating one from scratch instead of using a cookie cutter they bought from the WoW Corporation.

I just have to say ah-men to what they write in #3 about Escort Missions.

"No one has ever liked an escort mission, ever, in the history of gaming. So why do they still exist?"

Ever since I have been let down by WoW (it's original concept in beta is nothing like what it has evolved to today), MEO (LoTRO Now), PoTBS, AoC, Darkfall, and some other game I followed that didn't even make it to beta who's name I can't remember... I just don't really give a crap anymore. If a game comes out that is great so be it. Until then, they can all shove a ..... up their ........

Everything you wrote before this sentence is roleplaying. Only roleplayers want that sort of thing, nobody else, for the simple fact that it's roleplaying to want the town to seem like a town and want your character to follow some obtuse rules set by the game devs.

Sorry, this thread just really confused me because everything you said, prior to what's quoted, is roleplaying. Roleplaying is wanting the game to feel more like another world rather than a game. Everyone else.... just wants to play a game.

Granted, the less mature crowd does irk me at times in the chats, but most games have a way of ignoring them in some way shape or form.

I'm just throwing it out there, it's kind of a crazy thought though. But, why don't you go try an RP Server? I'm not meaning to sound like an ass. I have nothing against RPers, I wish I was into it. I'm just saying, you might like it.

Your profile says you're 18. Why don't you just go and get a job? You know, that's how most people afford to play MMOs.

Suck at life?

Go join the Army. You'll probably suck at that too, but at least you won't get fired.

Yeah, it was my fault. I'm lucky if I get 2hrs of sleep a night. Don't ask why, I'm in the Army. Lets just put it that way.

MMOs, the music gets extremely old. The FIRST thing I do in an MMO is turn OFF the music.

I do like things like EVE Radio however, that's a very nice thing they have going and they are interactive as well.

FPSs don't have music because hearing is very much apart of the game. How are you going to hear those footsteps if you have SLAYER - BLOODRAIN playing in the background?

I am not any asian race. But, I grew up around Koreans, Chinese, and Japanese.

I think the main thing is that Asian Peoples are about like white ppl when it comes to race. They simply just don't care. They haven't had really any mass discrimination in the past because of race, other than internal Asian history. A person might get mad if you say something like "G**k" (not meant as derogatory, just explaining myself) or "I hate C***ks" (again) or "Those GD Japs", because that's referring to a specific race. Which is something else most ppl don't understand, Asian and Oriental is not a Race in and of itself (at least every single Asian decent person I know sees it that way) because each country's people are very different.

I'm kinda all over the place here, but what I think is that it's because they haven't really been discriminated in the past for being Asian. Unlike... Black People, Jewish, or Polish who have all long histories of discrimination and tend to get offended when people talk about their race in a way that can be interp. as bad. (And rightfully so IMHO)

Not only that, but when we say "Stupid Asian Games" we aren't downing their race. It's merely a clash of cultures and those with Asian origins in the US are not Asians, they are Americans. American is a culture itself. They may have Korean background for example, but that doesn't mean they grew up in a Korean Culture. They grew up in an American culture.

(Sorry if this post makes no sense. It's hard for me to put my thoughts together coherently for some reason tonight. lol. Lack of Sleep)

Now, I don't know how good it is at teaching. But I have used this site many times as a resource.

I don't want to discourage you, but a MMORPG is such a massive effort that starting from your point it's almost impossible. Even for a basic 2D piece of junk that nobody will ever play.

A good programming language to learn (ok well it's the best) is C++. It can be used with any OS and is used to make most OSes and most games. Not only that, but pretty much every other language uses some of the core things taught in C/C++. People can argue with it being the best all day long. But the fact remains that it's the most widely used language in the world and is one of the most powerful, it's also not very hard to learn. (For some ppl that is).

I learned from books, so I don't know any resources online that would be able to teach you how to begin in C++. However, as far as the compiler goes, DEV C++ is by far the best. When I was in school, I got my entire Computer Science Dept to switch over to the compiler, because it was free small and just as powerful as Microsoft Studio for the applications we were using it for.

Anyway, I hope this helps and if you wanna program don't set your sites on a MMORPG or else it will never happen. Start small and build your way up. You're still a long way from even making a text game.
Now, if you're just looking to make a MMORPG, there are plenty of little tools out there (not free) that can help you with very limited coding experience.

What's so special about it?

It's a woman standing there in a forest. My computer can't run a game with graphics like that and neither can 90% of computer users. The only ones who can run a game like that with those graphics are ones who are all anal about getting the best possible graphics in their FPSs.... who are probably not going to play the game because they spent XXXXX on their machines to play FPSs.

Why do you say you hope they go crazy with something that lowers the world population and turns the game into something resembling Diablo?

Instances are a good idea, don't get me wrong. I hate it when you have ppl messing up your dungeons, but some games just push the instance too far. Such as WoW, GW, and others.

Out of that list, I would have to say FFXI is the one with the most life to it.

If you want old school then I would say www.ashenempires.com. If you want browser for a more casual play then www.dicingdangers.com

Ashen Empires isn't that Old School and came out after many of those games. It just a crappy game. (Though it was good when it was Dransik)

I don't really know.

The only thing I have to say is that MEO spent 3yrs on the design process trying to make the game as close to Tolkien's books as possible.

The sad thing is, that was all thrown out the window when Turbine bought the game and it became LoTR:O. The original MEO didn't have the license to anything from the movies. They retained only the license to the Books. Which is why it was Middle Earth Online instead of LoTRO.

Ok, lets just set things straight. I have been away from computers in General for about the last.... holy crap almost the last YEAR! (*gasp* I just realized that) Also, I never really followed this game because it didn't really interest me. I was following PoTBS and was hoping for the best.

But, when I started the PoTBS Beta. Pirates of the Carribean was just starting out and just hitting beta phase, I think. Here just a few minutes ago I was reading some posts here and saw the Pirates of the Carribean Ad. Naturally, whenever there is a game I don't know a whole lot about that's released I look over to the forums and check out what people have said about it. But, it wasn't there! I look down to the In Dev forums and it wasn't there!

So, I clicked the ad and scrolled through the site very briefly and I still can't figure out what this is. "Free to Download - Free to Play"

I'm kinda just wondering what the hell happened to this game and wasn't it supposed to be a real MMO, not something that was created and released in less than a year? Even with rumors is competing head to head with PoTBS.

- WOW was so bug-free and complete
You can talk to ppl all day long if you want. I am a programmer and I was in the beginnings of WoW. From 3 months before release to 3 months after release. WoW was about as complete and bug free you can ask for in a newly release MMO. There were VERY VERY few bugs in the beginning compared to any other MMO game on the market. There were quite a few imbalances however. An imbalance is in no way shape or form a bug.
- WOW is easy and carebearish
Easy, very. High end content is about as easy as they come. I have watched friends fight the big big bosses at 60 then bigger ones after the expansion at 70. Compared to other games high end content. It was like swatting a fly. (See L2 or others)

Carebearish, EXTREMELY. Absolutely no death penalty. You run back as a ghost and your back in the fight. Battlegrounds is just a minigame and has no effect on anything other than how much you play it. There is no real PVP in WoW what so ever. When most think PVP they thing UO or EVE online. There PVP makes a difference and you better keep your ass alive or you just lost weeks or months of gameplay in a single swoop.
