In the very distant future, on a very distant and harsh desert world called Rubi-Ka, a war rages between two very different factions. At the heart of this conflict resides an unassuming mineral called a notum found only on Rubi-Ka. Notums became the key component of nanotechnology, their properties used in the development of technologies similar to magic. One faction, the rebellious Clans, grew tired of laboring in the notum mines while the competing faction, Omni-Tek, reaped the rewards of unrestricted control of Rubi-Ka. Thus began a conflict with no foreseeable end. Choose a side and turn the tide of war or remain neutral and chart your own curse of adventure.
Anarchy Online is one of the few popular MMORPGs set in a science fiction future and carries the distinction of being the first MMO to make use of the “instance-dungeon system”. At character creation, players may choose one of four breeds (affects stats and skills), and one of fourteen professions and one of three factions soon after. As in many MMORPGs, characters in Anarchy Online gain experience points and levels through combat and mission completion. A character’s capabilities are impacted much more by “Improvement Points” than by levels, however. These IPs are awarded to players at each level and can be spent at any time to raise skills of their choice.
In Anarchy Online, players can explore dungeons (typically holding unique enemies and items and requiring teams of players), take on instanced missions offered at terminals or by NPCs, fight camps of concentrated enmies in the wilderness, engage in various forms of PvP combat, craft items, and, of course, roleplay in non-combat areas such as nightclubs. There are several means of personal transport for getting to these destinations in the game; ground-based vehicles called Kodiaks, air-based vehicles called Yalmahas, and water-based vehicles resembling hovercrafts.

Funcom has announced that they are making changes to the subscription model of Anarchy Online. They will be offering the contents of the Shadowlands expansion 5 USD / EUR, in addition to their free to play plan and 14.95 monthly fee.
The folks over at Funcom have announced that Anarchy Online will be getting a face lift in the form of a new engine. Game Director Craig Morrison takes the time to answer a few of our questions as we present a trailer featuring the new engine.
The Anarchy Online official site has been updated with a letter from the Game director. The letter details what's on the horizon for Anarchy Online, including new items and nanos, a new team instance, a re-write of the PvP title system, and more.
Funcom has announced that they have launched virtual items sales in Anarchy Online on all servers in a new mini-expansion. Among the new items that will be made available are hover boards and bikes, pets, social clothing, and more.
