While it is true that you will never reach an older player in terms of overall Skillpoints, you can easily specialise in a ship and weapon system in a few weeks/months, and then be on the same level as the veteran if you both fly the same ship class.
For example, Assault Frigs or Interceptors are quite easy to get into, and pretty capable combat vessels. At some point even the Vet will reach a point where he just can't improve his skills in an AF or Inty anymore. So if you specialize in AF or Inty, you will catch up to him at some point. Same with any other class of ship. The only thing that might be a problem is the money. He will have more money than you, but then again, money is what you earn for doing what you do in EvE. Isk is probably the closest thing to what Expirience is in WoW. You get isk for doing what you do in EvE. Kill NPC, Piracy, Bountyhunting, Trading, Producing, researching etc etc etc. I agree that EvE might not take new players by the hand and really show them the potential it offers. You really need to be smart and figure alot of it out yourself and you can be successful very early on in the game. |

It is all vaporware until I see it go live! |
I assure you... its an illusion that you think you could start out in WOW today and catch up to the people who've been playing and raiding hard since opening day....
Trust me...unless you gave up RL completely, and played 14 hours a day you'd never come close...but wait...many of the people you are trying to catch are playing 14 hours a day..... You'd always be behind them, while you're working on your tier 4 gear, they'll be raking in the tier 6..... trust me.... Theirs a lot of way to have fun in every game besides shooting for being first.... if you start late...you've lost that option, but doesn't mean a game can't still be quite fun. |

If you want to have more skill points than most, start a character before the next 'version' of Eve Online is released. Or to put it another way, when new versions are released there will be a larger influx of new players. If you beat this rush you will have more skill points than those starting players at least. I anticipate a large number of new players after the graphics are overhauled (this year), and an even larger influx of players once we can walk in space stations (next year). Alternatively, it is acceptable to buy high skill point characters from players with ingame ISK. |

Agree with OP, its why i dont play the game and never played more than the 14 day trial. You get into it and everythings gong great until it says wait 15 days before you can move on... common what kinda commies run this game putting everyone on a timetrack for skills? I want to be able to progress faster if im better than a noob, but i cant. thats when i quit. This game is for people who like to fool themselves into thinking this is hardcore pvp game and they're good at it. Its not, and they're not. Oh well, I guess there has to be a game for those who get pwned in real pvp games, too bad it has to be this one which ruins a perfectly good game as a result. |

1) Running your own corporation. This career gives you far more power than flying the best ships. For example, the character SirMolle practically 'won' eve by leading his corp/alliance, Band of Brothers, who now control much of the most profitable areas of space. Being a good leader is not dependent on skill points. However, it demands dedication, intelligence, planning, being a good judge of character, motivating people, and being able to 'see ahead'. Although this is a demanding career, everyone loves a good leader because the vast majority of players do not have the spare time required to be a good one. However, it sounds as if you do have the time. In addition, you will further your real life skills by doing this job!
2) Trading (buying and selling on the commodities markets). This eventually becomes the most profitable career in Eve by far, making the most money per unit time, and doing so with the least time spent at the keyboard. Seeing opportunities and exploiting them is not related to skill points. However, it probably requires a certain mind-set.
3) Simply being a decent team member. If you work for your corp, good corporation CEOs will give you ships, equipment, skill books, and tasks. Corporations will love you if you want to be covert ops, mine, or transport stuff. These professions do require some skilling up, but are not so skill intensive as PvP warfare. By the way, covert ops (scouting) in fleet warfare is good training to become a fleet commander one day, if this appeals to you. This is because they both require good communication, identifying what is important, stategic thinking, being patient, and having a fair amount of spare time.
I hope this helps. |

Originally posted by DemonknightI Totally agree with you, day ago cancelled account. Played for a year and bored to hell. Pvp isn't hardcore since you obviously know the outcome of the battle by looking at the ships and numbers of them. Too many farming and new players always give up after trial or 1st month of playing. Sad. |

EVE is a frame for us to make our own game out of it. And people who get it do it. People who don't should just leave. But I warn you, MMO market is crap, you will get bored in any game if you don't know what you want out of a game. So bored in EVE = bored in all games in the long run. Imho. |
