Tursh

Welcome to Tursh, the home of Thestran humans. Located in the central north area of the continent, Tursh and neighboring Rindol Field (home of Halflings) is located in the low hills surrounding the river basin. Nearby towns include Three Rivers Village to the south, Bordinar's Cleft to the southwest, and Renton Keep to the southeast.

Starting Out
Newly created human characters will start at a crossroads between Rindol Field, Tursh, and the Tursh Academy Dormitories. Guard Antonir will offer players a quest.

Restless Farmers
  1. Talk to Guard Antonir.
  2. Head north to the graveyard.
  3. Kill 6 Risen Farmers. These are level 1 and do not assist each other.
  4. Return to Guard Antonir
Rewards: 24 adventuring experience, choice of:
  • Hatchweave Linen Cuffs (Light Wrists Armor, 3 AC)
  • Bearskin Bracers (Medium Wrists Armor, 5 AC)
  • Wasp Segment Bracers (Heavy Wrists Armor, 11 AC)

Make sure you equip your new piece of armor: hit B to open your bags and right click the wrist item. This will auto-equip it to your character. Once you have completed Restless Farmers, Antonir will offer a new quest.

Nobody Expects the Arcane Inquisition
  1. Talk to Guard Antonir.
  2. Follow the path east. At the nearby fork, take the southeast path headed up the hill to the academy dormitories.
  3. In the middle of the dormitories, speak with High Inquisitor Velman.
Rewards: 24 adventuring experience.

Finishing this quest should advance you to Level 2. High Inquisitor Velman will offer four quests: Speak with Guard Paylan, X Training (dependant on class), Speak with Inquisitor Westlen, and Diplomacy. Select all of these tasks. Note that in your quest window, most of these tasks have white titles, while Speak With Guard Paylan is yellow. This means that the Speak With Guard Paylan task is a bit more difficult than the other quests for an adventurer of your level.

As the Training and Diplomacy tasks are nearby, finish those first:

X Training
  1. Talk to High Inquisitor Velman.
  2. Dependant on your class, you will receive Spellcaster Training, Light Fighter Training, Healer Training, or Heavy Fighter Training.
  3. In the courtyard you will find the four instructors; talk to the one that matches your quest (i.e. if you received Spellcaster Training, talk to Novice Alphonse, the Spellcaster Instructor).
Rewards: 8 adventuring experience.

Once you have finished your training quest, select the trainer option "Do you have anything to teach me?" Here you can purchase your two Level 2 spells.

Diplomacy
  1. Talk to High Inquisitor Velman.
  2. Head North but do not leave the building. Nearby you should see Marcus Remniol.
  3. Talk to Marcus Remniol, the Diplomacy Instructor.
Rewards: This will start the Diplomatic Training quest line. This will not be covered in this guide.

Now return to the Speak With Inquisitor Westlan task.

Speak with inquisitor westlan
  1. Talk to High Inquisitor Velman.
  2. Exit the academy dormitories and head east to the Riverside Guardpost. For easy navigation, open the quests window (L), select the Speak with Inquisitor Westlan task, and scroll down to "Locations". Check off Riverside Guardpost, and a red mark will appear on your minimap and in your compass display. The closer you get to the Guardpost, the larger the red mark will become in your compass. Note that this works for many tasks that send you to a new location.
  3. Talk to Inquisitor Westlan.
Rewards: 8 adventuring experience.

Completing Speak With Inquisitor Westlan will allow you to receive a new task, Zelser's Journal. Accept this task, and speak with nearby Acolyte Terlan to receive A Grave Brownie Threat.

Zelser's Journal
  1. Talk to Inquisitor Westlan.
  2. Head east to the nearby tower. On your way, you can talk to Terance Larker on top of the small hill to receive The Missing Hook quest. You may wish to complete this quest before you return to Westlan.
  3. Kill Untamed Tones (level 2) to receive pages of Zelsar's Journal. You need Page 1, 2, 3 and 4. These do not drop every kill, but will drop in order. Note: one great help in combat are your human Racial Abilities. See below for more information.
  4. Once you have the four pages, return to Inquisitor Westlan.
Rewards: 41 adventuring experience, choice of:
  • Hatchweave Linen Sash (Light Waist Armor, 4 AC)
  • Bearskin Belt (Medium Waist Armor, 7 AC)
  • Wasp Segment Belt (Heavy Waist Armor, 14 AC)

Racial Abilities- as a human, you have three racial abilities at your disposal:

  • Inspiring Presence- 2% bonus to armor class
  • Inspiring Tactics- 2% bonus to attack
  • Inspiring Wisdom- 3% bonus to group's energy
In the lower levels these low %s don't do much for your character, but as your AC, attack and energy regeneration rate grow, these become helpful groupwide buffs. A good human will always have one of these up on their group, and will coordinate with other humans in the group to have multiple buffs up.

The Missing Hook
  1. Talk to Terance Larker.
  2. Just southeast of Terance are fish with legs called Unnatural Beasts (Level 2, aggressive). Kill these until you receive a Tursh Novice Hook.
  3. Return to Terance Larker.
Rewards: 20 copper, 41 adventuring experience.

Passive vs Aggressive mobs
Notice that the Unnatural Beasts have red names - this means that they are aggressive. Aggressive monsters, unlike the yellow passives that you have fought so far, will attack you if you get close enough.

A Grave Brownie Threat
  1. Talk to Acolyte Terlan.
  2. Head northeast to the small building, downhill.
  3. Outside of the building (Wintham's Rest) is Acolyte Weylan. Speak to the Acolyte.
Rewards: 8 adventuring experience.

Before you return to Westlan and Terlan, accept Weylan's two quests, When Brownies Go Bad and Constructs of Doom. Note that Constructs of Doom calls for a small group - while this task can be done alone, see if anyone else in the area would be willing to party up!

When Brownies Go Bad
  1. Talk to Acolyte Weylan.
  2. Head east behind Wintham's Rest to the small graveyard.
  3. In the cemetery you will find Grave Brownies (Level 2, passive). Kill 7 of these.
  4. Return to Acolyte Weylan. NOTE: before returning to the Acolyte, you might want to complete Constructs of Doom in the cemetery, as well.
Rewards: 20 copper, 41 adventuring experience.
Constructs of Doom
  1. Talk to Acolyte Weylan.
  2. Head east behind Wintham's Rest to the small graveyard.
  3. In the cemetery you will find Grave Brownie Constructs (level 2, passive). While these are only level 2, they are what we will refer to as "3 dot" mobs - See below for an explanation of dots.
  4. Kill the Grave Brownie Constructs to receive Severed Arms.
  5. Once you have 4 Severed Arms, return to Acolyte Weylan.
Rewards: 40 copper, 41 adventuring experience.

Dot System
In Vanguard, monsters range in difficulty from solo mobs to group mobs to raid mobs. In your NPC target hub, notice that there 6 dots arranged in a half circle on the right of the hub. These dots will fill in as you target various mobs to tell you their target group difficulties.
  • 1 dot - a solo adventurer could likely take several of these at once.
  • 2 dots - a good match for a solo adventurer.
  • 3 dots - a good match for a pair of adventurers, or a brave solo adventurer.
  • 4 dots - a group of adventurers should work together against this mob.
  • 5 dots - this mob packs a punch, bring a trusted group!
  • 6 dots - this mob is a raid target!

Return now to the Riverside Guardpost. Accept the new quest from Inquisitor Westlan, The Origin of Imps, and note that Speak With Guard Paylan is now white. Since we are near the Riverside Guardpost still, though, finish Westlan's new quest:

The Origin of Imps
  1. Talk to Inquisitor Westlan.
  2. Head south of the Riverside Guardpost to the bridge.
  3. Across the bridge you will find Minor Rift Imps (level 3, 2 dots, passive). Kill these to receive Rift Dust. Make sure not to bring the Rift Imps across the bridge, or Inquisitor Nalstom will help!
  4. Once you have seven dusts, return to Inquisitor Westlan.
Rewards: 78 adventuring experience, choice of:
  • Hatchweave Linen Gloves (Light Hands Armor, 4 AC)
  • Bearskin Gloves (Medium Hands Armor, 7 AC)
  • Wasp Segment Gloves (Heavy Hands Armor, 14 AC)

Accept Westlan's quest, Search the Academy. South of the academy dormitories is the academy building, this one overrun with magic. Cross the river to reach this building, and pick up quests from Inquisitor Nalstorm (A Study of Time and Of the Nature of an Eye). Watch out for Lesser Rift Imps on your way!

Search the Academy
  1. Talk to Inquisitor Westlan.
  2. Head southwest, over the river, to the two-towered academy building. This is a good opportunity to use the Locations red markers in your quest window!
  3. Enter the academy from the northwest. You will need to kill Lesser Rift Imps (Level 2, 2 dots, aggressive) on your way into the academy.
  4. As you proceed around the spiral you will come to a large door on your left. Enter this door, and make your way up the spiral staircase.
  5. At the top of the staircase is a doorway leading outside and north. Make your way out, fighting Rift Oculuses (Level 3, 2 dots, aggressive) on your way. Head west at the T intersection.
  6. Head into this western tower. Sitting on the table is a Rolled Scroll; right click to pick up the scroll.
  7. This will open a loot box. Take the Sealed Scroll.
  8. Return to Inquisitor Westlan - finish A Study of Time and Of the Nature of an Eye, first!

Rewards: 30 copper, 78 adventuring experience.

A Study of Time
  1. Talk to Inquisitor Nalstom at the Riverside Guardpost bridge.

  5. Return to Inquisitor Nalstom.

Rewards: 30 copper, 78 adventuring experience

Of the nature of an eye
  1. Talk to Inquisitor Nalstom at the Riverside Guardpost bridge.

  3. Enter the main building and proceed up the spiral staircase.
  4. Kill Rift Oculi (level 3, aggressive, 2 dot) and loot 5 Ocular Encasings.
  5. Return to Inquisitor Nalstom.

Rewards: 30 copper, 78 adventuring experience

Dire Tidings
  1. Talk to Inquisitor Westlan.
  2. Head east to the Tursh Academy Dormitories.
  3. Talk to High Inquisitor Velman.

Rewards: 15 adventuring experience.

Pick up High Inquisitor Velman's new quest, Missive to Tursh. Also speak with Dininix Jixilin for the quest They Aren't Us. Now head north out of the Tursh Academy Dormitories; it's time to head to Tursh proper. On your way you will pass a farm; here you can speak with Reyonie Turnbull for the harvesting quest Harvest a Sapling Log and Daren Klendol for The Path of the X to chose your crafting class. These quests will not be covered in this guide. Continue to Tursh.

Missive to Tursh
  1. Talk to High Inquisitor Velman.
  2. Head north out of the Tursh Academy Dormitories and toward Tursh.
  3. On your way into town speak to Guard Manket to receive the quest Thieving Foxes.
  4. Head back out of Tursh on the South East path, and follow the path up to the Barracks.
  5. Head into the southeast building of the barracks.
  6. Speak to Lord Commander Oakheart by the fireplace.

Rewards: 25 copper, 50 adventuring experience.

Now that you have Thieving Foxes, head east and slightly south of Tursh. Find the area marked under quest journal locations for They Aren't Us; you'll be killing Redcaps and Foxes in the same area.

They Aren't Us
  1. Talk to Dininix Jixilin.
  2. Head northwest of the academy dormitories; check your quest journal locations for the red mark. Watch out for the Redcap Ambushers (level 4, 2 dots, aggressive) hidden in bushes!
  3. Kill 7 Deranged or Delirious Redcaps (level 4, 1/2 dots, aggressive) and 2 Wicked or Incoherent Redcaps (level 4, 2 dots, aggressive).
  4. Return to Dininix Jixilin. Note: If you aren't level 6, yet, you might want to wait to turn this in. Don't worry, this guide will send you back to the dormitories soon.

  3. Kill 7 Field Wolves or Field Foxes.
  4. Return to Guard Manket.

From here head south a bit to visit the Storehouse Guardpost; it's time to Speak With Guard Paylan.

Speak with guard paylan
  1. Talk to High Inquisitor Velman.
  2. Exit the academy dormitories and head west to the Storehouse Guardpost.
  3. Talk to Guard Paylan.

Rewards: 15 adventuring experience.

Here you can start the quests Take Back the Mill and Failings of the Mayor from Paylan and Tharrin Granitebeard. Note that both of these are group quests, and will require the help of several other adventurers. If you are level 5 or above, you can also receive Shimmerleaf Exile.

Constructing a Group- A good group at this level is made of three components: a heavy fighter type, to taunt and tank the mobs; a healer type, to keep the group alive; and light fighter/Spellcaster classes to do damage against the mob. Note that your group does not have to be perfectly balanced, and creative adventurers can always find a way to make do.

Take Back the Mill
  1. Talk to Guard Paylan.
  2. Head North from the Storehouse Guardpost to the Storehouse Mill. Note that you need to go to the Mill portion, not the Storehouse.
  3. Kill 3 Redcap Bonemillers and 5 Redcap Bonecollectors, level 5/6 aggressive 1/2 dot mobs.
  4. Return to Paylan.

Rewards: 50 copper, choice of:

  • Hatchweave Underlay (Light Arms Armor, 4 AC)
  • Wasp Segment Reinforcement (Heavy Arms Armor, 14 AC)
  • Bearskin Reinforcement (Medium Arms Armor, 7 AC)

When you have reached your 6th level, head back to your trainer in the Tursh Academy Dormitories to receive the Brave Student quest and turn in They're Not Us. Also make a stop at the nearby Pat Feron, a General Goods Vendor. Here you can sell items, buy food, ammo and other goodies, and repair your gear.

All gear has a Durability rating - when your durability goes down, so does the effectiveness of your gear. Durability goes down slowly while hunting. To repair your gear, talk to any general goods merchant and select "I need to repair my gear." This will open a window that lists gear that needs repairing, and how much the merchant will charge. Right click on a piece of gear to do the repairs.

Now it's time to return to the Storehouse Mill, but this time, go into the lower storehouse portion.

Failings of the Mayor
  1. Talk to Tharrin Granitebeard.
  2. Head North from the Storehouse Guardpost to the Storehouse Mill.
  3. Fight your way into the mill; you will be facing level 5/6 aggressive 1/2 dot brownies.
  4. Once you come to the T intersection, head right and go through the first door. Follow this pathway down through more brownies and some level 6 aggressive 2 dot Repository Infesters.
  5. When you come to brownies again, they will be level 7 aggressive 1/2 dot brownies. There is a small room to your immediate right guarded by a single 1 dot brownie; kill it.
  6. In the small room are several baskets of food. Loot one of the baskets.
  7. Return to Tharrin Granitebeard, but don't go yet! You still have to complete Brave Student; continue onward.

Rewards: 1 silver, 25 gold, 533 adventuring experience.

Brave Student

  1. Talk to your trainer in the Tursh Academy Dormitories.
  2. Head northwest to the Storehouse Mill.
  3. Fight your way into the storehouse; you will be facing Level 5/6 aggressive 1/2 dot brownies.

  5. When you come to brownies again, they will be level 7 aggressive 1/2 dot brownies.
  6. Keep fighting until you come to a large area similar to the first. The brownies here will be level 8 aggresssive 1/2 dots; fight through them and take a right down the path.
  7. Hug the left wall; the first left you can make, take it. In a narrow pathway you will find Dizak Lothred.
  8. Talk to Dizak Lothred.

Rewards: 873 adventuring experience.

Dizak Lothred will offer you a new quest:

Research Recovery
  1. Talk to Dizak Lothred.
  2. Dizak asks you to retrieve his Temporene Tracker. This can drop off of any 2 dot in the area; kill 2 dots until you get one. It is recommended that you avoid the pit; descending can be dangerous.
  3. Return to Dizak Lothred.

Rewards: 80 copper, 873 adventuring experience, choice of:

  • Hatchweave Linen Tunic (Light Chest Armor 14 AC, +44 Energy)
  • Ratskin Vest (Medium Chest Armor 29 AC, +3 Dex, +3 Str, +29 HP)
  • Wasp Segment Vest (Heavy Chest Armor 58 AC, +3 Con, +3 Str, +29 HP)
  • Bearskin Vest (Medium Chest Armor 29 AC, +5 Wis)

Return to the Tursh area; the easiest way to do this is to Recall. Once you have recalled, head back to the Storehouse Guardpost to turn in your quest.

Recalling

Recalling allows you to escape dangerous dungeons or travel across long distances to a destination you have previously visited. While it is a useful tool for returning to quest NPCs or town areas, the 15 second cast time and 1 hour refresh time make it more useful for out of combat travel. Your character starts off soulbound near Tursh, and recalling will bring you there.

By now you are probably at or nearing level 7. This is where you will meet the death penalty. If you died before level 7, you respawned at the altar with your gear and experience intact. After level 7, though, you will respawn only with soulbound gear and you will take an experience hit.

At this point, you may summon your corpse to the altar for a small fee of copper, a complete experience hit, and a durability hit to all of your gear. If you feel adventurous, you can retrieve your corpse where you died with none of the above detrimentals. Keep in mind, though, that if you died in a location with all your gear, you're even more likely to die there naked.

Now head to Tursh. While fighting through the Repository Infesters you should have gotten a locket drop to start the quest :

The Stolen Locket
  1. Head to the Storehouse Mill. Enter the Storehouse and fight your way down to the Repository Infesters.
  2. Kill Repository Infesters (level 6, aggressive, 2 dots) until Rusten's Locket drops.
  3. Loot the locket.
  4. Right click on the locket to begin the quest.
  5. Open your quest window and select the "Locations" for The Stolen Locket quest. This will give you a red mark guiding you to the Rusten Family Residence in Tursh.
  6. Head to the Rusten Family Residence.
  7. Talk to Amelia Rusten.

Rewards- 407 adventuring experience, choice of:

  • Western Watch Greatstaff (Staff, 7-10 damage, 3.25 speed, Activated Ability: Acid Bolt II)
  • Western Watch Greatmaul (Great Maul, 5-10 damage, 3.25 speed, +6 HP)
  • Western Watch Dagger (Dagger, 4-5 damage, +3 HP)
  • Western Watch Greatsword (Great Sword, 6-9 damage, 3.25 speed, +6 HP)

Turn this quest in to the Rustens and speak with Marshal Rusten to receive the quest More Going On. Note that, even if you didn't receive the locket, you should grab this quest from Marshal.

While in town, find the building with the "Bank of Tursh" side out front. Head in - and sure enough, it's a bank! If your inventory has started to feel cramped, this is the perfect place to fix it- talking to the banker, Bethany Rusten, will allow you access to 50 more slots of storage as well as coin storage. Note that the item storage is common to this continent, and on Kojan or Qalia you will have different storage access, but the coin is shared between all three continents' banks.

Now it's time to continue to the Shimmerleaf Guardpost. Continue north from Tursh.

  4. There are two ways to free brownies: kill the wandering Novices who are guarding wandering brownies, or kill the guards near the treestumps to free the brownies hiding inside. You must free 10 brownies; once you have eliminated their guards, right click on them the free them.
  5. Once you have freed 10 brownies, return to Shimmerleaf Elder Baroo.

Rewards: 1 silver, 20 copper, 873 adventuring experience.

Shimmerleaf Elder Baroo will offer you two new quests now, Brownie's Magic and You Say You Want a Revolution. You must complete You Say You Want a Revolution to continue, but Brownie's Magic is just for fun. Make a quick stop at the nearby general goods vendor, Valance Feron (on the other side of the guardpost) to sell and repair. Note also that you should pick up a friend or two to help with You Say You Want a Revolution.

Talk to Bryce Kundar, the Thestran Exchange Broker, to bring up the Exchange Window. This allows you to search the market for various items. Click the tab on the bottom that says "Your Market Items" to sell your own items; the best way to price them is to search for the item and see what others are charging for it!

The Tursh Academy Guardpost has a ton of quests for you to pick up: Talk to Halmm Wurgins for Needle in the Hay, Guard Rakner for the small group quests Unconventional Materials, Feeding the Hounds and Unusual Hobby, Guard Hokar for the small group quests Wolf Hunt and Unnerving Removal, andInquisitor Liorana for the group quests Open Source Cave and Burying Brownies. Note: make sure you do not delete the candles she gives you! If you are level 9 or above, Guard Hokar will give you Rare Bear as well.

Once you have finished the quests in the Rindol Wood, it's time to head to Riftseeker's Torrent, the "high end" area of Tursh. To reach Riftseeker's, start at the Tursh Academy Guardpost. Head east, toward the Mapleynn forest. Just north of the forest is a depression in the land; head downward to find a cave leading into Riftseekers. Note that these quests will require constant killing through various mobs ranging from level 7 to the mid teens.

Open Source Cave
  1. Talk to Inquisitor Liriona. You will receive a Blue Communication Candle.
  2. Head to the Riftseeker's Torrent area. There will be a cave with a long passageway leading down.
  3. Kill your way forward into the tunnel.
  4. In front of the glowing portal, say the magic password - Utaalk Ataraav Utkin.
  5. You will be transported into a long hallway. Proceed west down the hallway, killing either the Riftseeker Novices, Pupils and Scholars (level 8/9, aggressive, 2 dots) down the middle or the Illuminating Rift Ember (level 8, aggressive, 2 dots) down one of the sides. At the end of the passage is a door guarded by two humanoids.
  6. Follow the flow of the dungeon. Whenever you apre presented with a choice of paths, take the first door to your right. After several rooms you should reach another glowing portal.
  7. Once again, use the password - Utaalk Ataraav Utkin - to transport to a new area- Qur'Xa.
  8. Head up hill to the north; there is a dead end; kill the Imp taskmaster (level 9, aggressive, 3 dots), loot the key, and stop in the dead end to update your quest.
  9. Use the blue candle to talk to Liriona.
  10. Free 6 of the brownie slaves. To free the brownie slaves, you need keys from the Taskmasters: one key per slave.
  11. Return to Inquisitor Liriona.

Pass the portal to Qur'Xa and continue taking right turns. You will come to another long hallway, much like the entry hall. At the end of the hallway is another portal - you know the password.
  7. Entering the Bastion of the Dead will give you a quest update.
  8. Use the Black Candle to contact Liriona.
  9. Proceed down this wing; be careful! The redcaps here are close together.
