Welcome class to Supply and Demand 101, in this lesson we will cover the basics of trading. Trading is unlike any other aspect of this game, You require both skill and knowledge. One of the key things in trading is the understanding of supply and demand.

All ports consume goods, they all needs food to feed themselves and water to drink.

Resources which require more work (Such as the mining of ore or fabrication of high tech equipment) will be in less supply.

Trading can be either very profitable or can make you broke quickly.

The Key factors of a good trader are:

1. Knowledge of stations

"All stations are equal, but some are more equal than others"

Stations come in many different sizes. From the small mining platform to a large research laboratory All of them have different resources and desires.

"The level of technology the place has will effect it's desires."

e.g.: A small mining platform in Edras requires high-tech goods from Verasi and will pay more for it.

But the same platform will not pay well for ore that it mines. Vice versa for factory stations, they require raw materials.

2. Knowledge of markets

"People may always be the same, but the markets change"

Just because a run was profitable in the past doesn't mean it will be in the future.

Many factors effect trade runs, such as how often it is used.

A frequently used station will pay less for goods which it has.

A station in the middle of no-where will pay alot for shipments of goods

3. Knowledge of other traders

"Cheat on a mans wife and he'll hate you for a month. Cheat on his trade and he'll hate you forever"

As much as you think you are special, stations don't.

They don't care who gets them the goods as long as they get them.

So a route that you find could be drained of it's value by a competitor.

The answer? Fight back.

Trade is a ruthless endeavor, and there is nothing wrong with...

say.... relieving an opponent of his cargo.

4. Ability to protect yourself

"Ever since the dawn of time mankind has been bashing each other with sticks. Nothing much has changed, we just have bigger sticks."

Space is dangerous.

It's filled with people who want what your carrying and are not afraid to take it.

So the final thing i suggest to you is.... Learn "fight / Flight"

After the first shot is fired you have two choices.

Fight or flight

If you believe that you can take out the attack then by all means do so.

But in the more likely occasion of being out-gunned/out-manned it's better to know how to run.

"Put your ego aside and protect your hide"

Well space cadets, thats all for this lecture. I hope to see you again for the next lecture entitled "Mine, all mine"
