"We''re not making a game for Trekkies" Daron Stinnett, Perpetual Entertainment |
Another "keep the kids out" thread. Simply put, it isn't going to happen. This game is hugely popular with the young teenage crowd. Adults thinking there are going to get a "mature" crowd are just kidding themselves and are in for some serious disappointment. This game has real time combat, decapitation, and nudity (and soon on the XBox 360). That is the trifecta for teen gamers. If mommy and daddy don't pony up and buy this game for their kids, they can do it themselves via their friends. Registration, no problem. Any 14 year old with a wad of cash can buy a preloaded visa card from Wal-Mart and register this game or simpler yet, just buy time cards after having you 17 year old friends by the game for you. Anyway, I wish you the best of luck in your "mature" game on May 20th.

The problem is more maturity than age really. Alot of those people that are doing all that trash talking and acting stupid, sadly are adults. That being said anyone that would let their 10 year old kid play any MMO unsupervised, especially this one, should probably have their kid taken by child protective services. |

SCIENCE PROVES CAPS LOCK CAN CURE CANCER. |
Originally posted by skeptical I agree with the above comment. Maturity is more of an issue than the age that the game appeals to. Funcom, for the most part, is being extremely intelligent so far marketing-wise. It's appealing to both the adult and young adult population, particularly the majority of the general public doesn't realize this. It's called "sub-instinctual" advertising. The M-rating and the addition of more gore and "boobies" appeals greatly to the adult public, considering 1.) it's offering more, simply put, and 2.) It gives a sense that it will allow a more mature community. The M-rating appeals and the addition of more gore and "boobies" appeals greatly to the young adult public, considering 1.) it's offering more, simply put, and 2.) It gives the sense that it will allow a more young adult community. See what's going on here...? If you're going to be playing any sort of online video game, expect young people to play. The young adult gaming population is much more vast than that of it's 18+ counterpart, simply towards the fact that they (or should I say we... I'm a minor myself) have more free time and also because we generally know our way around technology more than the adult public, when counting statistics. what I'm ultimately trying to say is, don't expect any sort of truly "mature" game until about 20 years from now, when the generations become much more aware with growing technologies and with a larger (possibly even) amount of adult and young adult players... that is, if you consider age to be a factor for maturity. If you don't believe age makes the difference over maturity (like myself), don't expect to have any differences EVER. If you want me to explain WHY there's such an immature gaming community in most MMORPGs, that's a completely different subject. Mob Mentality, and several other factors, prove important factors to this that would take me another huge amount of typing to explain. Not that maturity should be a big issue in the first place... what I'm about to do is going to make my entire speech completely obsolete. /ignore the BOOM HEADSHOT LULULULULULZ! Problem solved. I'm just a genius I guess for being one of the few to discover such a mechanism. |

I have found a great away around these issues: 1. Found a guild with a minimum 25 year old age limit to get in. 2. The guild doesn't put up with that crap. 3. Leave all chat channels but guild. Simple and easy. Seriously though, they will not stay out, thats for sure. They will play and they will be there in large numbers but I do hope that the "M" rating will keep some out of the game. I spoke with the manager of a local Gamestop and she said they would ID everyone for the game. I believe it when I see it but maybe this time, they might. I know I would because that way little Johnny can't take the game home and then I receive a phone call 2 days later from a Mom bittching about Why I sold her son the game. I personally would ID guys with white hair, walking with a cane and wearing Viagra clothing if they came to buy it. The "M" rating is a whole new animal for the MMO world. Restrictions and all of that might be more readily enforced or might not. We shall see. However, I think the biggest deterrent for kiddies with this game will that it will not be pretty (i.e WOW pretty or stylized like that) and that I think it will be a hard and complicated game to play. Not to criticize WOW but its easy to play in terms of button smashing and such. Age of Conan will be a bit harder to play. This is just a guess though. I mean look at some of the tougher/older/less appealing games on the market (DAOC, FFXI, EQ2); very little kiddie population. Honestly, the best thing for the community in Age of Conan will be when WAR launches. I think it will appeal more to the crowd. Nothing against WAR, I plan to play too, but I think the graphics, atmosphere and such will pull many to it. And soon after that will be the WOW expansion which will draw even more kids back to it. We can't stop them from playing but find a mature guild that keeps them out and that will help. |

Age and maturity are not related. I'm sure by this first sentence everyone is assuming I'm a child, and at 16 I would agree. I have played MMOs on and off since I was 10 though including EQ I/II, EVE, WoW, RF Online, and Ragnarok Online. I can assure you there are many people who are just not people you can get along with because of the way they act, what they say on a ventrilo server, and their consideration twoards others time and commitments. Because adults have more legal rights, and had more experiences, they assume that they are more intelligent, more responsible, and better suited to play video games. The fact of the matter is there really is not any reasonable backing behind anyone of these accusations. I have read 5 full pages of posts many of which consist of "I Hate kids they saw LAWL and PWNED and OMGZORS!!! How could somone possibly let them play a game??? Their parents are probably raising the next generation of BTKs and allowing their children to see BREASTS and possibly hear words unknown to the innocent and foolish ears of someone who can't drive."
A Valid argument, but where's your point? No, I can't drive on my own. Yes I have the capeability to type in capital letters and possibly spell out acronyms or leet expressions that frustrate you. But i've recently discovered a 30+ year old I played with dropped out of high school, and is a drug addict waiting to get off of probation so that he can buy more weed. Does his caps lock button not work? Is it in middle and high schools that expressions like FUKIN NEWB are taught on the black board? Anyone who has without a warent declared themself a better gamer than anyone under 18 has only proven their immaturity. Your math problems wont work, somone would need a math major to outsolve many high school students these days. You wont be able to report everyone you suspect of being 15, because their parents will cover for them and you wont want to wait 4 hours for a GM. You wont be able to put in enough violence or sex to scare parents or kids away, nothing to do with irresonsible parents or violent children, the game appeals to us the same reason it appeals to you.
You hate kids, make an 18+ guild, they make alot of sense and I have nothing against them. You are skeptic? Have people photocopy drivers liscenes and send in pictures and have phone call references, you can have the most anti child guild in the game for all I care. I dont know why you should expect a company that makes as much money from child players as adult players to inconvinience themselves with that. Age is something quick and easy to accuse someone of, but no one here has built a satisfactory argument. Yea you probably knew a kid who was an asshole, I know a few thousand, but there are just as many college students, house wives, and 9-5 worksmen that also did not have internet etiquete up to par with the almight commitee of Age of Conan customers who have been alive for awhile. Im sorry for ruining your forum experience with my blatant, annoying and verbose complaints as a child. Perhaps its my parents fault for not hovering over me on the internet and makeing sure I dont go on internet sites that adults might view >_<. I guess I am complaining, but you would probably be displeased too if there was a forum post going on about how people over 18 are creepy for playing video games that are dominantly child populated and rated for 13 year olds. Go ahead and attack my credibility, but your age, nor my age should affect our game play. |

Not to get into a discussion of age vs. maturity as it's sort of a mute point, but here's a novel idea: self policing servers. This has worked fairly well in EQ2, mostly I would guess because the community in general is fairly mature. Once in awhile we would get one of these leet kids who talk trash in general chat, and three people would jump on him.
This sounds militant, but the suggestion would be; it's up to the server community itself to do something about it. Farfetched perhaps with a game that's screaming for underage attention, but that's about all you can do to keep the kiddies off, or at least behave.
Often that not, a reporting threat can also work wonders. This has worked surprisingly well in Wow even. Ofcourse, it requires some policing, but that's a server wide rather than an individual effort. |

Hahaha you think because it says M it will stop people buying the game? newsflash nobody gives a damn about video game ratings. jesus christ you think people under 15 dont watch 18 rated movies or play 18 rated video games? Lol if you think that then people on this site are really delusional. It | |
