The least restrictive game maps I'd ever played, were in SWG, and even then you couldn't jump up.  So getting up on buildings roof was near immposible.  As for the rest, there's always the building ledge to far,etc..., but if your thinking 2D mapping restrictive, then it's absolutely not the case.

Vanguard has full movement freedom.. if you see it.. you can get on top of it (especially with flying mounts etc)

As for AoC (and war) i've already preordered myself.. if it turns out to be crappy.. oh well.. the cost of trying is minimal as far as entertainment costs go.  Costs what, 10 bucks for a 75 minute movie?  The 100 bucks (or how ever it came up to with taxes for the preorder)  is like 10 movies, or 750 minutes of entertainment (on average), which is roughly 12.5 hours of entertainment, which is less than I would get out of the game even if it is crappy.  So its value to entertainment ratio is very good. And the devs get paid, companies get paid, and people continue to see MMO's as economically viable to develop and publish, which helps the players. (And why does it have to be aoc OR war? theres many months in between the 2, plenty of time to get tired of one and move on to the next)

Agree

It doesn't have to be and many non hater/fanbois will be doing exactly as you said , playing both to see which they like the most - or maybe even continuing to pay both , gasp

Only insecure folks feel they have to have "their" game be the "best" and spew out crap about the other one without knowing what they are talking about

If its any consolation WAR has it serious problems as well so its not just AOC.

You could gather this by the sudden announcement of  WAR being delayed..

If its true it will be very disapointing to me, i hate this kind of environment, that was one thing that used to annoy me a lot in EQ2. DnL was a disaster, terrible and bugged but the freedom i had to go anywhere i could see was just amazing! Same happens with SWG and Vanguard, freedom FTW.

Conall's valley is build vertically so to speak so it may look smaller than the rest of the zones ;)

Climbing anyone?

Btw, because that guy hit a bug spot, the game does not mean that it has invisible walls. If he was actually useful, he'd report it (yes, they get removed as time passes by).

Edit: So far I've seen 4 months + old beta leaks. Since they patch roughly every 10 days, how many builds behind do you recon these videos are?

The truth about companies disliking beta leaks is that they don't come with time stamps, nor they show the improvements over time.

Bottom line, if you're undecided about this MMO (and any other for that matter) and don't want to give the box money to check it for a month, wait for the open beta or for some free testing that is bound to come at some point after release. Sometimes the game looks great but the feeling isn't there, sometime it looks crap but it plays amazingly. Nothing beats first hand experience.

Noone claimed that it doesn't. It also has bugs, balancing and other issues. That's why it's in beta, unless I missed something.

Now, if these bugs etc make it in the release version, then it's another story. Until then, beta testers will find bugs (and hopefully report them) every day. That doesn't mean that the game is bad, it means that the game is not ready for release yet.

Invisible walls are a total party-pooper for me. There is nothing more immersion braking than that... Just the thing to remind you that you're playing a computer game rather than being in some parallel universe. It is totally beyond contempt that any modern game that pretends to some "immersivity" would stoop to that level. And loading zones are just slightly less horrible in that regard.

I'd rather play a game with Pacman graphics but real seamless living world than a photo-realistic theme park with arrows pointing you where to go for your "rpg experience".

Meh, WoW has set the standard with their seamless, loadingscreen-free world. Imo there is only one option for new games that seriously want to play ball - and that is to surpass WoW with more interactivity, "living world" stuff etc. No one looking past screenshots or IP is going to buy this huge step back to the "level loading" times... This isn't 1998 you know...

WoW has set the standard for seamless world? what about Ultima Online and everquest which came way before WoW.  And Ultima Online already surpassed WoW in interactivity.

Lol, I didn't say WoW "invented" seamless worlds  - I'm saying WoW has set the standard that other games in that genre have to follow or surpass in order to compete.

The same thing is with animations and UI really.. We saw a bunch of games coming out recently that would have represented the Second Coming if they appeared before WoW. Their flaws would have been looked over in those pre-WoW days. However, WoW has spoiled players enough to demand certain gfx, UI and animation standards from their games. The majority of players, those whose first MMORPG was WoW, expect at least the same level of UI and gameplay (and world structure tbs) before they'll ever think of switching.

I know that I'm spoiled... Although I did play quite a lot of MMORPGS before WoW I simply couldn't make myself play DAoC (clunky UI) and GW (invisible walls, instance fest) after tasting WoW.

Anywayz, I'll be playing AoC now that WAR's been postponed... It's just I really don't believe the game will hold me much beyond the usual leveling run and some endgame. Might be wrong there, dunno. However invisible walls may even prevent me from doing even that. I might buy the game, play until I get to my first "glass barrier" and blow my top.

You are missing the point..No one here is saying the game is bad..on the contrary the graphics are top notch but the world and what you can actually do in it and where you can go is not what a lot of people are expecting.

As i said before ..some may like the NWN /gw type restrictions on exploration but if you are a gamer that likes open world where if you see it you can go to it you will be disappointed.

Anyway this should cheer you up..necro lich form..

Boo

I am surprised that so many people keep talking about games that have seemless worlds or landscapes.  I even find it more funny that people thing Wow's world is seemless.  IMO the one who started the seemless worlds was Asherons Call.  I mean you could portal from place to place if you wanted but you could also run there, it might take you 2 hours but not one zone screen or pause just terrain as far as you could see.  Just wanted to point that out, seeing how zoneing seems to always have a pause in most games, but AC didn't have that.  If AOC has it I don't know if people will like that.

Not sure why these placeholder graphics should cheer me up.

Btw, I'm sure that people won't like the zoning. That didn't stop EQ2 from becoming a great game. It might have had a better luck batting shoulders with WoW, if it was released at the time with less bugs and issues. It's still a great game, despite of the zoning.
