It seems forums are flooded with talk about performance. As they probably should be; the Vanguard beta ran 10x better for me than this game. I have never spent 10 minutes of loading time only to crash after 2 minutes of play time in any game, anywhere at any time. Well, at least not until AoC. I'm running with a Q9300, 4GB of RAM and an ATI 3850, so again, I think some of the complaints are founded, for a game that is 10 days from release. But a badly stuttering, graphical gliching, memory leaking, crashing to desktop game could still be patched and fixed. I could overlook so much if I was drawn into the game, heck I played SWG Pre-CU so obviously buggy games aren't some new thing to me.

So am I the only one who thinks the major problem for AoC is much deeper than simple performance? For some reason this game doesn't even come close to drawing me into the gameplay. I hate the button mashing combat and the spam of new (mostly useless) skills every time I level. Nothing about the world really intreges me, so I don't feel drawn into that either. I love that they have done voice overs for most of the quests I've hit so far, since that really helps immersion and makes me actually not want to skip the entire quest text, but I still am not taken by the story.

I don't see combat taking any skill, just a slightly more furious button mashing than I'm used to in MMOs. For that matter: am I the only one who doesn't want an MMO to become an FPS? I like sitting back pushing hotkeys and auto attacking, for the most part. Not 100% of the time, but that's why I still heavily play FPSes. I don't want the two to cross over, not even a little (okay, larger scale FPSes can be fun, like Planetside).

I'm sure many people will enjoy this game like I wanted to, but I'm pretty certain at this point I've no interest in spending money on the experience. Good luck & have fun. I hope AoC is a runaway success so maybe it will drag me in after launch!

I've experienced almost no problems with performance at all, some small interface problems and thats about it
I'm running it with Windows Vista and a 7600 with dual core 4.2 amd processors  and 3 gigs of ram, runs pretty damn smooth.

I do not see why people feel the need to express their feelings about stuff they hate. It brings everyones hopes down about something they "could" have fun with. Just because you do not enjoy it, do not try to convince others to follow the same reasoning. You obviously made this post for a purpose; and I doubt it was just to tell people you dont like it. You wanted to confirm that others share the same feelings and thoughts as you.

So your too lazy to press some buttons to attack.... sorry that every game can't be made for "your" convenience. Since when can a game be judged on it's storyline within the first 13 levels? Some of the greatest movies out started off slow or boring. It sounds to me like your patience is null... On another note, you have basically top of the line parts, but still have problems? Uhh, learn2 build a computer, or at least learn to tweak.....
I'm running semi-similar parts as you and yes, I had issues, but with a little effort and adjustments, I have zero problems in conan now.

I agree that there are some major problems with the game software but I'm thinking they aren't too huge.  I'm an eternal optimist and I'm hoping that Funcom will do something before release.  Maybe the patch on the 10th will make everything better.

On the combat system, I think it takes some getting used to.  At this point I've played 4 character to 13 and think i'm starting to like it.  So I'd say give it time.  Although who knows I might change my mind when higher levels have longer chains but I figure I'll find a macro keyboard if that becomes too irritating.

Overall I thing the game is great if they can just fix the technical issues.

SCIENCE PROVES CAPS LOCK CAN CURE CANCER.

hmm, yeah it is really odd that some people with computers like yours can't run this game. I do honestly find it interesting, because there are people that are stating that they can play this game on their mediocre computers at least on low-med settings and people with your computers that can't even play at all. It is disturbing, and obviously a major issue with the game still not being able to function properly for all rigs, no matter what their actual efficiency is.

Tbh though if you really don't think the combat, gameplay, and everything else you mentioned, just don't play this game. It's really that simple. I've found through my own experiences that it's alot easier to just find a game that you enjoy rather than just keep hoping a game changes to your likes. However, your post does show at least a little interest, since you say you might come back if they fix these performance issues... so if you really do feel this way I'd wait for a couple months. I'm sure these problems will not last for long. But, like I said, if it's just the game itself that you are finding boring, you have a better chance just trying to find a new game. There are plenty of others around and I'm sure a good amount I could suggest to you

As for myself I haven't really had any problems with the game, played on 5 different rigs and they all seem to run pretty good. I find the gameplay and everything else about the game fun, so I will be purchasing it by release, or maybe a week after, whenever. All I know is I will probably be getting this game whenever I get a chance. As for yourself I hope you find something that can maintain to your interests!

Questions for the OP:

What OS are you running? (XP or Vista, 32 or 64 bit)

What DX version are you trying to use when playing? (DX9 or DX10)

Have you tried beta versions of drivers from ATI?

I am running 32 bit Vista using DX9 and have nVidia's latest beta driver and crash very rarely, and overall performance is very smooth even on High settings.

My computer specifications are a little lower than yours in terms of processor speed (Q6600), I also have 4GB RAM, and I am running a GeForce 8800 GT.

If you are trying to use DX10, try DX9. If you are using a 64 bit OS, perhaps that is causing issues. If you are not using beta drivers, try them out and see if they help.

Cheers,

Riker99

I stopped reading right there. I played VSOH BETA from almost day 1, and followed it until release and about 3 months after...then i came back a year later and subscribed for another 2 months to try the updates...and honestly VG performance is still nowhere near where AoC is today. And this is with the SAME rig i used for both games.

OP - If you are playing Open beta - You are now two builds behind Closed beta - they game runs like smooth butter in CB and has almost no performance issues.

Well this is an interesting statement he made though.... Me and my friend had almost the same exact computers. He never crashed once for weeks, and I of course crashed every 30 minutes like 99% of the population during beta and after.

I have to agree. AoC trumps VG on performance. I think T3hpwn  is crazy in the head.

Allrighty, so after reading about the so called "miracle patch" today here on mmorpg.com, i decided to give closed beta one more shot.  It indeed seems to have cut back the loading times drasticly, i never had to wait more then 20 or 30 seconds!   Unfortunately, i'm still having low framerates in the wilds and 5 fps slideshows in Tortage.  Global chat was full of talk about performance issues, so i asked around what i could do -after this patch- to increase my fps. One guy replied me by saying i had to delete the cache files in my conan folder. I decided to make  a screenshot of his instructions, but when i pressed the button... the game locked up and started repeating the last frame over and over again?!  Since i could not ctrl-alt-del or alt+tab out of it, i had to switch the power off/on.  After being logged in again and clicking on my character to enter the game, it gave me the "client of wrong version" error?!

At that moment, i laughed out loud and just deleted it again from my pc.

My system: Pentium DC 2.8 Gig, 2048MB ram, geforce 8800GT 512 MB alpha dog,  windows XP.

Actually i kept on reading... and found this next.

If AoC combat does not take any skill then let's agree non of the MMO out there require any skill at all. I am for one looking forward to a true MMOFPS, where accuracy, reflexes and speed will dictate the issue of a fight, and not +300 agi and the latest and greatest Bow of Shadow Burning Death Slowly Killing Mob...

In any case, AoC is not perfect, and it won't appeal to the masses (first of all because it can't with an M rating). But objectively it has great graphix, a more demanding combat system, a lore and so far an interesting story line with entertaining cut scenes. Performance will be an issue for some, as it always is, but let's not bash on something with good potential just after 1 week of stress testing to lvl 13 ...

Wait for the release, wait for reviews then decide...so you don't waste your money.
