"If I had eight hours to chop down a tree, I would spend six hours sharpening my axe" - Abe Lincoln

Hello everyone,

I am wondering if someone can explain whether or not WAR is intended to be friendly to part-time gamers, or if you will be required to play 18 hours per day to stay competitive?  I am a vet of UO, DAOC, Eve Online, Lineage 2, and WOW.

I started playing in undergrad, and have now completed professional school and own my own business.  Although I haven't played any MMO is about 8 months or so, I am closely watching WAR because it looks so amazing .  I am concerned, however, that this game will be unplayable with only a couple hours daily and maybe one weekend day to devote, or less.  The main reason why I couldn't continue playing Lineage 2 or Eve Online had to do with limited time --- both of those games required incredible amounts of time to get anything done.

I am interested in knowing if WAR will implement any features designed to help out people who can't devote their entire life to playing?  I'm thinking specifically of what I believed to be an amazing feature of WOW, the xp meter that allowed you to earn double xp after being logged out for a period of time.

If anyone knows of specific features or can describe why they think this game will be friendly to part-time gamers, I am very interested in hearing your input.

Thanks a ton in advance for any input!

Forum Poll

How much time do you devote to online gaming per week?

I'm a "full-time" gamer: 40+ hours per week
I'm a "part-time" gamer: 15-40 hours per week
I'm a "limited-time" gamer: 0-15 hours per week

Behold! Rash of the Itch King comes in November! Quake in fear!

WAR has some very casual-friendly features such as PQs. Jump in, fight a bit, grab your exp and loot, all without getting in a group! Fast, fun, and leaves you with the feeling of accomplishment. Also if you want PvP but not RvR necessarily there are scenarios which let you play quickly while still helping out your side.

Be my friend!

in short the answer is NO. Basically, If you plan on accomplishing anything within the game, it will require loads of hours of playing, leveling, pvping, etc. U have to ask yourself, whats more important: My schoolwork or playing WAR?

They have implemented things for the casual gamer. Things such as scenarios (think WoW battleground) which only last for 20 minutes or so and can be joined very quickly is a simple way to not devote hours of game play yet gain levels AND help your faction in the WAR. Quests lead you to the next area or areas with more quests so random running around while searching for something to do is eliminated. On the flip side, there are plenty of hidden places with all types of "phat loot" for the non casual gamer willing to explore the world completely. I can't remember the other things Mythic implemented for the casual gamer, but I'm sure there's more. Hope this helps.

And poor little Oakthornn can't back up his claim.

My dog ate your homework.

Imho the main selling point of WAR is that it is going to be extremely casual friendly. This has been the devs' stated aim ever since the development started. It remains to be seen how appealing it'll be to hardcore players but casuals will certainly have a ball.

- Public quests - extremely casual open-world PvE events.

- non-instanced world PvP. Even if you don't have a clue you'll be welcome to act as cannon fodder since there is no limit to the number of players participating.

- top endgame content open to all players (city sieges). In fact you'll be able to storm the enemy's capital even before reaching the level cap - level 7 (out of 40) has been mentioned. Granted, you won't be able to do much but you'll still be able to participate.

- low or non-existent death penalties which boost the quantity of PvP encounters and avoid the mistake of punishing inexperienced players for trying to learn to play.

etc.

from all I've seen so far you'll be able to pretty much play the game as an online FPS that takes place in a persistent world, if this is your wish. Log in, kill somebody (preferably from within a zerg), log out and still feel you've accomplished something for yourself and your realm.

Warhammer
Alliance

Yes WAR will be perfect for casual/part-timers as well as more hardcore.

Lots of jump in content, including RVR and scenerios.

So if you only have 15 minutes you can find something to do and get some XP.

I would take the responses of "this game will be casual friendly" with a grain of salt. It seems that this is the standard response when fans are trying to get a person who is on the fence. From what I have been reading over at Warhammer alliance (outside of the newcomers area of course ), the reality is that the game will be very time consuming unless you want to just do the side stuff in the game like PQs.

For example, I was reading one persons response at WHA where they said that 30 hours a week might cut it if they really try hard.

Well these are all speculations and ofc the hardcores will say something like that.

The fact is that there are no guild or sometimes even group requirements for almost anything in the game.

Ofc a person who spends 30hrs a week will get more rewards and be more effective than somebody who plays an hour daily. However the content they have access to will be almost the same. Casuals will see pretty much the same game as hardcores. In addition the emphasis on open world play, both in PvP and PvE, means that there won't be as much elitism as in games where instance size is the king.

I thought Public Quests ( Over 300 in game ) and Scenarios were made for the casual player who had little time to play and wanted to jump right into the action?

Why So Serious?

There's tons for the casual / part time player to do and tons for the hardcore.  If you want to be hardcore you can play the game hardcore..if you want to play liesurely you can do that.   Unlike other games that force you to play in hardcore mode in order to accomplish anything WAR's taking a pretty different approach with its Achievement system, PQ System, its Open World RvR, Scenarios, even the City Siege is being geared so casuals can log on even long after the initial siege and still get to participate (it lastsup to 24 hours as of last mention).

Obviously the Hardcores are going to be more efficient at Sieging but there's no Group Requirement so you can just run into the Fray and fight like hell without having to search for a group or a guild.  There's little forced Grouping instead its encouraged if you want ot do things 'faster' but you can still accomplish almost everything on your own (except sacking a city, a keep, and the very few instances in the game that require groups).

I'm part time I play 2 to 3 hours a night during the week sometimes less if I need a break and on the weekends im known to play 5 to 10 hours with only some minimal breaks for food and sanity.   I've been disconent w
