You really need to read and understand what he is trying to tell you.

If the reviewer says WAR is a contender..  then by definition he is saying it is a contender to WOW/LOTRO.

You were trying to be a pedant..  it has backfired.  Just leave it.

by definition that's what contender means:

to contend + -er

Noun

contender (plural contenders)

1. Someone who competes with one or more other people 
    

All it means is that the game can compete with the other big name on the market. Nothing about "taking a title" . Try to learn words in their real context. This ain't boxing.

I am glad.

Still , there are people that think AOC combat is great.

It is a mater of taste. Fanbois are also blinded by devotion and can not think objectively.

What i read in Eurogamer article - is spamming skills , and something about combat not feeling quite right.

Videos i have seen also do not look very exciting (actually not exciting at all)

I read many posts saying combat is bland....

Who should i believe ?

i find AoC combat repetitve and boring.

Beleive what you want, buy it or don't buy it. I am not here trying to convince anyone, and everyone's tastes are different. Try it when they offer a free trial or buddy key. Otherwise, your stuck between what you read and what you hear. Either way you seem to have made up your mind on the game. So i am not going to try to convince you other wise.

Should believe what you yourself feel when you try it. Thats what I did, and I decided I liked it.

If that is completely impossible for some reason, find someone that enjoys the same things you do, has similar concepts of what is and isn't fun, and see if they like it.

The chances of two random people having the same impressions might not be dependable, but two people that have the same tastes, could be.

The combat system may seam a bit clunky from the footage we have been able to see. I was in closed and open for both WOW and LOTRO and they were just as mechanical and the release code was a 100% better and smoother for each when the hit the market and matured over time. The fact that the engine is going to be more accommodating for older machines shows potential for larger populations and that is the most import thing as far as I can see for this to work, Warhammer is about large nasty battles and you cannot have that without good server populations.

With in the constraints I think this is a fair article that gave a good progress report.

So you two guys think that when he said 'we have a contender' he meant what?  That Mything/EA was going to sell a MMORPG?  That's understood, there's no reason to say that. So that can't be it.

Even if you don't know what the phrase means, the context that he uses in the article is WoW  - the most popular western MMO and LOTRO the most highly rated MMO. 

But yeah, 95 out of 100 people who read the article understand the context to be big western MMO's (you know the things he explicitedly mentioned in the article) and you guys think that the previewer meant it is going to contend with World War II Online and Istaria.

Since I think a few people already defined contender for you Id normally not repeat It but ill make an exception for you. The Word contender has a Boxing background meaning The Little New guy VS the Star Title Holder the guy doesnt say specifically Lotro or WoW but when he says "lady and gentleman we have a contender" which is used in the last words of the article not the middle which I think you may have gotten confused a little around there.He means NEW little WAR the contender is going  up against the title holders  WoW/Lotro since they are the real title holders for different things graphics and game, he Is talking specifically a contender as a whole game not graphics wise earlier maybe he ment that but not in the lasts few words, thats why he included Lotro as the graphics title holder WAR is also a contender to Lotro graphics and WoWs ( Not really though WARs graphics would destroy WoWs 1on 1) thats what he was saying earlier in article you are right but he says in the end  as well the contender thing, but hes summing everything up as the whole game being a contender to WoW the title holder.
