Combat system

The combat system SGW is planning on using has never worked before in MMO's. Its more geared for consoles and multiplayer action based games so why do developers keep trying to push this genre on us ?

It didnt work for Tabula Rasa

It didnt work for Face of Mankind

It didnt work for Planetside

It didnt work for Star Wars Galaxies NGE

And I doubt it will work for StarGate Worlds

And when I say "didnt work" im referring to the fact that all the games that have used this combat system totally flopped.

Social stuff

Anyone else notice that in the video the devs talk 100% about combat ? Not a single mention of social aspects of the MMO like crafting. Based on what Ive read from these guys, the video, and similiarities to Tabula Rasa Im predicting this game will 99% focused on combat. Umm did these guys watch the same shows I did cause combat wasnt the sole focus of the series.

I havent written the game off yet but Im smelling another Tabula Rasa mulitplayer shooter blahfest linear game. sigh...

Like I pointed out in another thread, CME can't control what X-Play wants to focus on in their quick segment. There could have been all kinds of things said by those interviewed that never was shown.

I'd also ask what combat system you're referring to? Because they never really said anything specific about it other than it would have some similarities to FPS, but they were being careful not to go too far in that direction.

I'd suggest just taking a bit of time and visiting the Stargate Worlds main forum, http://forums.stargateworlds.com/index.php and the wiki site (this has a lot of good info) http://www.stargateworldswiki.com/wiki/Main_Page

I truly believe if you do visit the forums and read around a bit, you'll quickly see that this company isn't going to neglect the "social stuff".

If that's too much trouble, well then I'll just assure you that they have talked about crafting and other "social stuff", and have very interesting systems planned. Ones which promise to be quite deep from the looks of things even at this stage.

I'll say it again, with a large degree of confidence, this isn't going to be a TR clone.

Most of the games mentioned by OP hardly "flopped" due to combat system.

Besides, this game is based on  the mediocre TV-series (I have watched almost every episode myself as well) rather than the original film I believe. So if they do want to reflect the TV-series well, it has to be pretty fast-based combat. Throw in the mix some techonology, archgeology and alien conflicts and you have a pretty solid theme for Stargate game.

Honestly, if you are looking for a deep social game like EVE, look elsewhere, imho.

Combat will be like Tabula Rasa, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I mean just because TR was a bit crap in the long run doesn't mean SGW will be, I personally found the combat to be quite enjoyable.

Mass Effect didnt flop....in fact it did EXTREMELY well with its third person shooting view. Planetside at one time wasnt a flop either....

I would rather have interactive combat than sitting and watch my toon auto attack

Life is short. Blow something UP!

IT didnt work for Tabula Rasa - was a mediocre game at best. i played the beta, didn't last 2 days in it. the game itself didn't really engage me. i loved the combat system, but it wasn't always the best.

It didnt work for Planetside - played this for 3 months, ending up quitting for the same reason that everyone else did: it's owned by SoE. SoE is the worst company to make games that i know of. they released a patch that crashed 99.9% of all subscribers upon login for a full 24 before they fixed it. Followed by the fact that in 2 months you were max battle rank, in 3 months at most you were max command rank. the RP health element was retarded, the Jackhammer-spam was OP for years, nobdy used anything but if they could. And it just got old. by the time they started adding content, they had all ready merged servers like 6 months before. i subscribed to this game for 3 months. i played Battlefield 2 for 14 months straight. both are shooters, but obviously one is more fruitful. Planetside did not flop until the 4th or 5th month, due to the lack of any real difference. it was a plain Zerg-fest. no fine strategy, just general "you zerg here, we zerg here, we break through and zerg all at the same point until we crush them"

And I doubt it will work for StarGate Worlds - just finished watching the G4TV video, but it doesn't look anything like these games. it looks sorta like that you select a target then fire as you choose. kinda like age of conan, but no directional attacks.

it's...scary. very, very, very, scary...the world we live in...that's why i love the virtual world.

To the people that are critical of CME's choice for a combat system for SGW,  I'm curious as to just what kind of combat system they would have chosen? Seeing as it is based on the Stargate series and all. I'm racking my brain trying to think in what other direction they could have possibly gone given the IP and the combat seen throughout the series.

You are entitled to your opinion but - mediocre?  Ten seasons, two DVD movies, and a spin-off going into its fifth season - mediocre?

But like I said, you are entitled to your opinion.

Serious, I don't understand why people seem to hate this type of combat system.  I don't know why you like the 'sit there and hit a button every couple seconds to attack' combat system more

If you wanna find out more about the game, such as the social stuff, check out stargatewiki.com

If it's really that mediocre....why did you watch every episode? And don't give me any of that "there was nothing better on" trash.

Seriously. Wait for the game to come out, then form an opinion. And you can't base ANY game off it's Beta. That's why it's called BETA. It's still a work in progress. Maybe if the beta players had raised enough of a stink about the combat system in TR it wouldn't have sucked so much. Ever think about that?

I have to concur. Your character is....SHOOTING GUNS...last time I checked, you kind of have to aim one of those. What other methodology would you like to ascribe to? BAH! Have some faith in the developers. Have some faith in the folks producing the game. Enjoy all the great things they are trying to create instead of sitting back with this "If I was developer god.." tude. They (CME) seem like a comeptent, educated and talented group.

Not to mention they have a huge pile of Beta testers to draw from, which, if they're granting proper feedback to the devs, should help to build a nice smooth combat system.

It wasn't the combat system in any of those games that made the game suck. Twitch based combat is actually a lot of fun when put together will well balanced classes, enemies, and terrain.

BTW planetside was amazing if SGW is similar they will have my money for a long time. SWG twitch isn't that bad, but they did eventually go back to the lock on system which doesn't matter. Tabula Rasa just sucked, go read the forums on why and it wasn't combat. Just heard not to waist my time with Face of Mankind so shrug.
