what client are you starting out with?, the patcher at a few points will get stuck, and, sometimes what you need to do is redo a relaunch of the patcher.
no, AO doesn't have a steep learning curve.
but, it has alot unusual side roads that can take you off your beaten path.
there are many beginning proffession, up to 12-13 I believe, and its a matter of watch proffession fits you, form Martial Artist, all the way to Trader.
the game is built around 1 specific zone, and, with expansion that you buy to add to your core game it has many areas.
But, the many area, which is the biggest you can try as a froob ( free noob), is RK, has many zone, though, your not allowed to use the GMS(Trqade Mareket Terminals), or, to enter any player city buildings.
But, as a subscriber, you get access to those. Also, if you buy the expansion packs, well, then you get to play in other areas, Like Lost Eden, Shadowlands, which have even more playing potential, and, even broadens your character pausibilities.
The only thing I recommend is to sign up as a froob for a few weeks/months, and, get a handle on the game. After that, you may find that its a game you'll enjoy. :)
good Luck, and hope to see you on AO
after 4 and 3/4 years, I still love the game, but, the thing I don't like is the fact that there is no true element of surprise, or, mystery, i.e. there isn't a lurking dark race, that just pops up out of no where to harass you, or, the fact there isn't any open raids to defend against a major fleet incursion in hi sec.
Would be nice to get online and have to race to a close by system to help 100 other pilots take down a major incursion by a fleet, would also introduce the new players to fleet tatics.
All in all, the ambulation that the Devs and GMs are working on will be glory for the first week, but, after that, it will become stale and just another backdrop noise to the game.
True, still, many companies claim they are trying, but, more and more Gold Sellers appear from no where.
Heck, I even got mad at one GM in Eve, and, got nasty and outrightly accused him of being part of a Gold Seller chain, and, shortly after that, it seemed several Gold Sellers disappeared, but, less then a week later, about 50 new isk sellers appeared :(
Personally, I'm really surprised that game companies haven't gotten smarter about how to stop Gold Sellers.
If I had a good game, and, I wanted to cut off gold Sellers, I'd specifically find the names of these GSs and then call the accounting firm, and, having thier CCs cutoff, the more they try getting passed by different CCs, then, I'd cutoff thier CCs even more.
If companies see that those paticular CCs, or, several CCs from one small company have been suddenly cut off, then, they'll stop them also. A red Flag of GSs getting royally banned, would have others thinking that game companies are finally getting serious about the GS problems
