After 1.7 yrs I've finally decided to return! I recently purchased the 2008 Vana'diel Collection and am currently updating the game; which doesn't take nearly as long as before anymore. Looks like Square added a huge portion of the updates on the new DVD.
Normal background textures in FFXI Config are 1024*1024 and I'm planning on forcing those to 2048*2048, and the highest screen resolution is around 1280*1024 which I plan to force to 1680*1050.
I love this game very much and even though 6yrs old FFXI still looks amazing and even more so with the forced textures and resolutions. I will have some pics and possible some videos to share once I find a place I can upload them to that won't reduce their quality any. I wanna show others how great this game looks with its age!
If you want to see how your PC handles this game, you can DL the Official Benchmark 3 here
Here are my scores, and keep in mind that Squares' scoring system caps at 7000 being godly:
Low: 9677
High: 7504
i've recently been playing around with this and my screen res is usually the exact same as yours. i successfully changed the background res to 2560x2048 while having a screen a screen res of 1280x1024. but i tried to beef up the screen res to 1680x1050 as you did and i got an error. any advice?

Thanks for the info guys. I do appreciate it. I would join a linkshell on another server but i think i have a whitemage already around level 15 on bismarck. Maybe i should just look for any linkshell though, and start again Im really looking for a social aspect to this game. I feel thats what I can never find in alot of MMO's. Just a good group of people to play and hang out with.
if your time invested in your whitemage is more than you can stand to lose try shouting in jeuno or a main city (just one shout don't get annoying) "/sh are there any large social shells looking for members". this should fetch you a good few tells which will populate you with noobs and vets alike.

I would love to come back to FFXI, really.
I want them to merge the servers, and I think it's a necessary thing to do. I could so rarely find a party, and even if I did after it was finally put together the players would seem to systematically leave the group.
I never played for that long of a time and that may have something to do with my problem, but I hear that the higher level you get the harder it is to find a group. If this is so, why has Square Enix done nothing to alleviate the lack of players on each server? Maybe each time I played I was just unlucky enough to get on extremely un populated servers, but I don't think thats the case.
Has this idea ever been considered by the FFXI team, or is this just not going to happen?
Thanks for your help ~
yeah i really don't like the idea of a server merge. because once you get out of the whole "i hate lfg because i can never level blah blah blah". you get into the "omfg wtf is with all these people at fafnir". i don't know about most people but i enjoy having a spread out server pop and the 6th highest populated MMO and anything more would make getting most higher level HNM items impossible for most players.

In regards to point 2, I think you can play without groups, depending on the mob and the class you are, also there are tings you can do while waiting for a group if its really needed. You can up ur stats to make you stronger or up your craft skills etc.
seriously, this game is fantastic. it's been around for 6 years. it has the 5th highest player base out of any MMO right now. the waiting for groups isn't really that bad (depending on your job). what most people don't realise is because there are around 20 jobs now and since you can level all 20 with only one character, people need to start over...with every character. so if you are a brand new level 10 whitemage, some guy who has 8 level 75's and more gil than you can write on a piece of paper might invite you. and if you do a /sea all 8-12 or w/e and check what people are using what jobs, you WILL KNOW if it is even worth lfg. also once you get a fairly sizable linkshell all you have to do is /l "anyone want to xp around 10" or something and you'll at least get a few people who will want to join up.
fact is, game is great. please don't sleep on it as most people seem to have. it's getting old and looks a bit dated now, but the story and pve is the best out of any mmo. it's the hardest and highest risk/reward crafting.
