For those of you curious about pushing the graphics on this bad boy...

Here is a current system requirments screenshot for Windows Vista for those of you that want to know. This does not violate the NDA from what I have read.

I would have to say in light of the recent postponement of WAR, I'm starting to really look forward to AoC as my newest habit instead.
The timers are really your only shot at preventing this. The problem with clustering is the accounts that had toons on the other servers/realms pre-cluster.
Mythic simply couldnt say "Hey, we are merging this serving with your Hib alt on it, to the Alb one your playing now....So pick the one you want to keep." So they had to offer the timers.
Its far too late to really do anything about it now because they have let everyone see the "greener grass" by taking away all timers whatsoever. Going back to the "timer" ruleset would make all the x-realmers furious and they would probably quit now that they have been playing it this way for so long now.
All that aside, you will never be able to replicate DAOC's golden days when there were no clustering or timers. A day when you picked a realm for that particular server and that was it ,unless you deleted every toon on that server or bought another account, you were devoted to that particular realm from then on. Clustering ruined this important aspect of the game.
TOA killed it with items, Cats took the MM out of MMORPG with the solo instances (Hey I missed waiting in line at the Keltoi 100k room), DR gave you a pretty little weapon to use on classic servers, and Lab killed the frontier keep play.
"If it aint broke, dont fix it." Too bad Mythic never realized that.
