Latest Blog Entry - PK's and you
From my blog Never wrote a blog [Entreri28]

Just thought I would write a blog to educate people about PKs.  It seems that some people take being PKed as a personal attack.  Also these same people like to make up personalities of PKers.

Back when I played UO I was first a foremost a pker.  Every pker I knew did about the same as I did.  About 50% of our time was spent just sitting around chatting at people's houses.  40% of the time was spent dueling each other for fun and just to get better.  Only about 10% of the time I played my pk did I actually go looking for someone to kill.  There was little difference between  pking and faction pvp in most people's eyes back then.  Most people I knew wouldn't even loot people most of the time unless they needed the equipment/reagents.  Or if the person was a bad sport.  Which usually happened.  The person would decide to take it personally and call names or whine so then they would be looted and probably camped.  That's just what happens when you are a bad sport.  The most important thing really, don't take video games too seriously, very few people will kill your character and mean it as a personal attack on you, so don't take it that way.  It's just part of the game, there is a winner and a loser and you can't win all the time.  Imagine if professional athletes whined and called names everytime they lost.  Even though some do lol.  If you really don't like the game just quit, that's what people generally do.  I know this is going to make the people that take pking as a personal attack mad, but it really shouldn't.  I am not writing this to be mean, there is a big difference between being critical and being mean.

I think if the game is made right, pking won't be a problem.  Like in UO, the power scope between a vet and a newbie was very slim.  You could play for a few days and at least stand a chance at winning.

Now about people gloating, it happens in every game, over many actions, there doesn't need to be pvp for it to happen.  Pkers arn't anti-social or children, you would just be stereotyping to say that.  Someone could just as easily say that people that like to roleplay are ugly loser in real life.  These are just stereotypes, they arn't true.

I have never met a person that kills people just to cause them grief.  There is pretty much no such thing as a griefer.  This is an example of people taking gaming to seriously.  It is the same as someone calling you a carebear.  You would be very hard pressed to find someone who actually pks people to cause grief.

It is fine to dislike pvp, but don't be one of the people that takes gaming so seriously it is like a religion and the have to make up stereotypes about playstyles they don't like.

I hope you have read this with an open mind and not taken it as an attack on your playstyle because it was not intended as such.

More options, creates more possible counters and more possible solutions to situations, ergo, more "strategy" is required to excell at combat.

I'm not saying one requires more "skill" than the other, I'm just saying that there is maybe a bit more involved in sticky-target MMO's than many people want to give them credit for. I won#t say which I think requires more skill. I think they require differing combinations of skill.

Esit: To sandboxy: I heard about that, though I've been too busy to give it another shot recently. But I just might do that in the near future. ^^

I see this a lot.  The thing is, a game with manual targeting like DF adds more skill to combat.  You still have every aspect of combat from an auto targetting game like WoW or any other.  However, it adds in another dimension to combat, the actual delivery of the attack.  You don't lose anything, it just adds more for you to think about in a fight.

It is this aspect of combat that makes it possible for 3 newbs to kill a veteran as often quoted from the devs.  For example, you can know every attack in the game and how to counter it and have your own attacks do massive damage, but that won't let you win every fight if you can't carry out your attacks.  This is why it is thought of as having much more skill.  You can't just tell someone how to win, they actually have to be able to do the attack.  Unlike an EQ clone where someone could tell you a strategy to use, order to press the buttons, against each class and you would win most of your fights.  This is why people joke how a monkey could do it.

    • What makes sandbox mmos = better community?
    • Well I think the main thing, without bringing in other factors like ffa pvp, is just the goals.

Compare the goals of a WoW player

      1. Level up

      2. Complete quests

      3. Get better gear

Everyone has the same goals because the game is so narrow it doesn't allow for other goals.  Everything in the game will revolve around the above goals.  Every kind of player will group together because they all are forced to the same goals.

Then in a sandbox you decide what you goals are.  So people you group with will probably have similar interests as you.  Someone who wants to run a vendor shop probably won't run around  with someone who wants to go around pirating.  Though I guess they may buy from them.  Basically, you are grouped with people in a sandbox because you have similar interests, where in a themepark game you are grouped because there are so few ways to play the game, there is only one group and that is the group with character advancement as the goal.

Then you add in pvp and looting and that is a good reason to not make an ass of yourself.

That's part of why I think sandbox MMO's are so much better.

    • computer help
    • My computer keeps putting in letters and opening stuff when I'm not doing anything.  I have tried 2 different keyboards and all my USB slots and it does the same thing, even when there is no keyboard plugged in it does it.

I have scanned my computer with AVG and it found no virus.  I have also used 2 spyware scanners and it hasn't helped.

I  have popped the battery for CMOS out and waited about 5 mins and put it back in.  I have also reformatted my computer now because a friend told me it was a virus he had had recently and reformatting fixed it.  I reformatted and when it starts up (XP btw) and it asks for my name or computer name it is still doing it.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

    • Tasos's May 23rd Update
    • They generally released updates about every 2-3 weeks recently.  So why whine about not having a date when it has only been 4 days.  Give it 2-3 weeks to see if they will have one out.

What is there really left for the critics to post about?

Tasos is now MIA with no new journals coming out in the near future that anyone knows of.

Warcry has pretty much extracted themselves as DF cheerleaders.

No publisher is on the horizon.

No beta is on the horizon.

Release is projected this year when there has been no evidence that progress has been made in development.

So this leaves what for people to take about? Perhaps the reason the board is so quiet is because the fanboys have nothing left to cling to. Almost at the midpoint of the year and the great savior of MMOs is just as obscure as ever.

Lol yeah claiming victory over trolls is hard.  Maybe if you guys would bring up ONE worthy point.  Tasos only posted the update 4 days ago, for all we know he could just post the updates on the DF site, more people would probably read them then.  The contact at Warcry quit, I suspect they will probably still be the host of the updates, Tasos will just have to get in contact with them.  They can always self publish, Tasos said they were making progress.  Beta is set for 2008, maybe you didn't hear, which only gives us 7 more months.  I guess you didn't read it, but he said they would be increasing PR efforts, with a comprehensive video and interviews, we can see the progress when/if those are released.

We could always argue about the font on the DF website or how long it has been in developement, you know the things the trolls always bring up that don't matter.
