Yes although there is no PvP on the home server, we do have a little issue with some rather over enthusiastic fauna - the curse of many a new player is taking their new shovel, striding out into the brave new world and getting eaten by the first spider they find.
So, if you are into hunting, well, villages require meat and meat tends to come from animals who have an opinion about being hunted!
As for dungeons, on Wurm we dig our own.
Take your shovel and dig down till you hit rock, then take up your pick and open up a tunnel.
Some of the mines are now vast! And abandoned ones become the hiding places of cave bugs and giant scorpions.
A note on the Free to Play - On Wurm you can play for free as long as you like. However, if you want to raise your skills above the 20 cap you will need to turn to pay for premium time. This prevents you from doing some things. For instance to build a Stone house you need a masonry skill of at least 30 -so that is a problem. You can build wooden houses though.
However, if you dont want to go premium - that is fine, you can simply carry on playing as you are. No time limit.
One slightly misleading aspect on the article is about houses everywhere. Round Newtown, your starting point on Jenn-Kellon Home, there are houses everywhere, this is true. However, this is not true all over the map. I am on a large island on the far eastern Ocean and there are just a handfull of us,
And the new Mol-Rahan server (premium only) has loads of space, massive mountains and clean wonderful air -honestly, just take a deep breath! More information here: http://www.wurmonline.com/Game-News/a-new-land-is-discovered.html
Wurm is wonderful. So wonderful that I am writing the music for it - and I dont give my time lightly!
See you there, I hope!
Umm - construction crews. Now there is a thing!
Since this is an MMO, more than one person can work on, say, building a house.
Some of the projects people design take a lot of work - for instance the ramp up the side of the mountain at Rockcliff was a massive undertaking - and people helped out.
And, depending on the arrangements, players can earn in game money from other players for doing work, though lots help each other out just for the fun of it too.
So, yes, I suppose you can "hire" a construction crew of sorts!
As for the in game money (silvers) there are three ways you can get these:
1. You can sell stuff you make to the kingdom traders, or to other players (directly or through a personal merchant - an NPC that you buy and maintain)
2. You can earn money from other players as I have mentioned above
3. You can buy Silvers from the on line shop. This helps fund the game and aslo helps keep the Premium Subscription cost down. Also, this means that some players who haven't the time to play for hours every day can get enough coins to do things like buy deeds in the game from the Kingdom Traders - this helps give everyone a chance.
As for mining - well, you can mine Silver and Gold, as well as zinc, iron, tin, lead and copper. But you cannot mint coins. As in real life, this would really mess up the economy!
However, since you can trade, you can earn money from your efforts instead! (in game only, I hasten to add - this is not a game for earning real money, thank goodness!)
No, it is not the "demo" version.
You play the exact same game as everyone else.
You just cannot build your skills so high.
The premium servers use EXACTLY the same client and server as the Jenn Kellon server. The JK server is not a cut down or demo version. Most of the long term players there are Premium.
So yes, you can come along to Wurm Online and sign up for free, login to the JK server and play as much as you like for as long as you like.
If you wish to geet your skill past 20 you can buy some premium time to add to your account at just 5 euros a month (at todays date - just in case someone reads this in 10 years time!) If you dont want to buy premium time, that is fine also.
So, rather than just complain about it, come along and play! We like to see new and old players alike.
Indeed the new server is Premium only (that was in the press release, but didn't make it here, for some reason)
However, the Free to Play option allows you to play as long as you like and do vast amounts of things on the Jenn Kellon home lands.
Your only limit is that you cannot build your skills beyond 20.
However, that still allows you to go anywhere, do anything within your ability, build a house, cook, farm, fight the wildlife (though you may get eaten) join a village and thoroughly enjoy yourself.
We have several villagers in my village who are young and cannot afford premium. They are treated as equals by the other players and are helped when they need to do something beyond their skill. And they are hard workers and add benefit to the village - we are pleased to have them!
And of course, since you by premium in lumps, some of them are going premium just for their summer break and will revert back to Free to Play afterwards.
Seems like a bit of a bargain to me.
Oh, should just add that I saw a Caravel sailing by our harbour - which means someone has actually completed this very difficult vessel - lots of Wurm hours needed!
And to get you in the mood, pop along to Wurm is Waiting - the music of wurm on Myspace - http://www.myspace.com/wurmonline.
Check out The Raven and The Winds Last Master and Blow Wind Blow - three songs written for the game that are all about the sailing folk round the coasts of the lands.
How many hours per day do you play MMORPGs?
