It plays better when I played earlier this year with the free month. Zoning is in every MMO, just vanguard is more seamless so zoning might feel a little stranger then a load screen. When you move from 1 chunk of land to the other it was definately more optimized though as an experience.
Endgame is getting there, but I never got to try it, quest work better. There was one major quest that was broken but it was "just" broken. A simple gm ticket gave me the quest item in a matter of minutes and I was off again doing my thing. The game feels alot more complete now definately though if you hated it before there probally isnt much more to bring you back. Diplomacy is still a mess past the low level quest.
In lineage 2 it was easy to have 200+ people at a single castle siege without much lag on full settings graphically on a higher end rig, or a large raid like Antharas in the begining.
Phantasy Star BB was the first online RPG on a console far as I know but it was far from MMORPG much like Universe.
FFXI bought the true MMO experience to consoles, massive amounts of people in areas, the grind and grouping with people at random without going back to port ect ect. BB and Universe are like very low tech versions of guild wars in their mission structure, with far less people in one spot per shard and no "open" areas which even guild wars had.
As for PSU, I got it for $20 new, a month after its release on ebay =P Apparently it bombed real bad but I found the singleplayer campaign enjoyable even if it wasnt to others.
