::snort::  Mate, your choice of classes for this example is... perennial.

OK, but the way that I've understood the ranting is that this is a change coming down the pipe.

I don't exacty expect a change of this magnitude, I'll just be laughing madly if they do.

Yet what I'm seeing - or at least what people seem to be suggesting is happening - is another case where a dev studio begins sweeping changes rather than addressing the real issues.  Why balance classes and fix bugs when you can just change the very nature of the game?

This is so precious.  Oh hells, I almost want it to be true just so I can watch the virtual train wreck and all of its glorious carnage.

So what I'm looking for is confirmation (a link to an official source of some sort would be great) one way or the other.  Are they removing the nudity?  How about the harsh language as well?

If it is then I am just... in awe.

Same here... theres a twisted malicious evil bitch-side of me that just wants them to crash and burn so I can see it happen. I missed out on NGE-gate back when Star Wars Galaxies was at its prime... lol

This is basically where I'm coming from.  It floors me to no end to think that a company could possibly be able to ignore that lesson and go through with this kind of change.

It's probably not true or otherwise being exaggerated, but there's nothing that can be done about it if it does turn out to be true.  Watching the decent into choas would be priceless, and well worth what I paid for the box!

...but still, I'd like an official confirmation or denial before I break out the popcorn and shades, or meander off to bid my time elsewhere.

    • If a seemless world is superior to zones, why were zones originally used?

It was a limitation of technology.  Zoning was used because it was easier on both the server and the PC.

Developers have to code for the lowest common denominator, and this mean that a very limited number of models could be loaded into memory at any one time on any one PC.  It was not an option to dynamically adjust this number if your PC had more memory than someone else's.

Some objects were world objects that remained in memory regardless of your zone (pets, for instance), while some would be zone specific such as mobs, buildings, certain trees and whatever.

This was a major problem in EQ back in the day.  The developers (or at least the PR guy) consistantly used this global file as an excuse to explain why they would not improve, add, or otherwise change certain visual features of a game.

As technology has improved, both the server and the PC have reached a stage where there is no need for a noticable zone.  Technology is now there that allows a server to stream data to the cilent (that is your PC), and our PCs typically now have enough system RAM and video to store the objects or otherwise release them without slowing down too much.

I'm sure that coders also use a more practical method of caching the data on the PC as well for those times that a system doesn't have the necessary resouces.  This would be where chugging is experienced as the PC stoers and / or retrieves the data.

Internet connection speeds were also a concern, of course.  Players were connecting with 14.4 or 56k dial up modems.  This means that their Internet connection could only download about 2 KB/s on a 14.4 or about 5 KB/s on a 56k.

So as far as your question goes, the answer is an "all of the above". :)
