Latest Blog Entry - FFXI, Almost everything I hate about MMO’s in one package.
From my blog Rollo's Gaming Blog [Rollotamasi]

If I were to try to make a list of things that I DON’T want in a MMO I could point at FFXI and say “Pretty much that”.  Totally group centric, harsh death penalty, travel is a absolute nightmare, game play was totally GRINDTASTIC.  The totally #&$$#@ up part is that it is by far, hands down, without a doubt my FAVORITE MMO I have ever played.   Kind of odd isn’t it?  There were so many things that I hated about FFXI  but it was the little things that made me not care.

The music.  FFXI has the best music I have ever heard in a MMO.  I used to love arriving in Juno just to hear that music.  It is the only MMO music that I can still hear clearly in my head. I haven’t played FFXI in 4 years and I can still hum the toon and it still makes me tap my foot.  There is a reason the FF series is known for great music, FFXI is no exception.  In addition I can still hear the music from the Mithra zone.  The name escapes me at the moment.

Unique classes.  There are actually several things I loved about the classes in FFXI. One is that they were unique and the other is that they actually had clearly defined roles.  I’ll start with the latter.  I think this is something that is missing from today’s MMO’s.  Classes actually having a ROLE.  Seems like now days every class is a sword swinging, robe wearing, nuke casting, healing crack mage.  There was something oddly comforting about getting into a group in FFXI and KNOWING what I was supposed to do.  I played 2 classes.  Samurai and red mage.  When I played my red mage I knew my job was to keep refresh up on the casters,  help heal the tank if he got low and magic burst when I could.  While it seems simplistic there was something enjoyable about it.

Samurai, summoner, black mage.  While in retrospect this classes are really just run of the mill MMO classes they just FELT different in FFXI.  A black mage didn’t feel like just another wizard.  A samurai didn’t feel like just another damage dealer.  Because each class had a defined role they tended to feel unique.  Black mage was THE magic damage dealer.  Hands down, no questions asked.  It wasn’t like todays MMO’s where 8 classes fill the same role.

SLOW ass progression.  You might go 10 levels without getting a new ability.  But for some reason that made getting that new ability a lot more exciting.  I remember when I first got meditate on my samurai and refresh on my red mage.  It felt like I had actually accomplished something.  A feeling I have never gotten since (With exception of maybe eve when I got done training a long skill).  Now days it seems like you get a new ability or upgrade every level.  It just doesn’t have the same rewarding feeling.

Fishing.  Fishing in FFXI has to be the most repetitive mini game EVER created.  It basically boiled down to hitting a button and waiting.  Rinse, wash and repeat.  But for some reason I LOVED fishing.  I kept my account active for 4 months after I technically quit the game just to fish.  I used to love putting on my fishing gear and spending hours simply sitting on the Bastok bridge.   The only thing that could have made it better would have been if they put a cooler of miller high life in the game.  This is the type of side activity that today’s MMO’s really need to try to match.  Something else to do in game that is just plain “cool”.

If there is a gaming feeling that I have spent the last years trying to find again, It is FFXI.  It is the only game world that I can honestly describe as truly memorable.   From the races, to the zones, to the classes.  I loved this game.  I hope the next SE mmo doesn’t deviate to far from the formula.

    • Question to those of you that have played EQ2

Endurance in vanguard is more like wow then eq2.  In eq2 endurance is kinda like mana you use it till you run out.  In vanguard endurance replentishes in battle quickly and the pool is quite tiny.  So you need to factor that into deciding what abilities to use.  So in vanguard combat goes do an attack, do another attack, crit, do a finisher or which you have several choices, or maybe you have a counter attack, or maybe your defensive target is being attacked and you have an defensive attack option available.

So unlike eq2 where you pretty much run through all your attacks and they wait for the cooldown to finish to hit the next one.  In vanguard you frequently have to decide which attack you are going to use based on how much endurance you have, what finishers, counters, defensive attacks are available and also sometimes the position of the mob and what effect you want to place on the mob.  If you are in a group you also need to think about weaknesses and other group members.  For example maybe a certain attack creates a weakness the ranger can exploit.  It might be a good idea to use that attack frequently to keep that weakness up on the mob?

Casters also have finishers, but another unique one is counter spelling.  Casters will sometimes see what spell the mob is caster.  So for example if you are fighting a hard mob that can heal casters might see the healing spell being cast and then they can counter spell it which prevents that spell from working and provides the caster with extra endurance or energy for more spells.

Sounds a bit like the skill chain system from FFXI.  EQ2 tried to impliment something like it but I found that no one really used it because it didn't make that big of a difference.  I loved it in FFXI, hated it in EQ2.  Sounds like combat in Vanguard is a bit more in depth which is something I would enjoy.  Anyone know if they plan on having a trial any time soon?

    • Question to those of you that have played EQ2
    • In the past couple of weeks I have been considering checking out vanguard (They REALLY need a trial by the way).  I have watched a few movies of it on you tube and done a good deal of research.  My question is this.  From watching the vids it looks like the combat is very similiar to EQ2.  I played EQ2 and enjoyed it but I don't want to play EQ2-2 if you know what I mean.  Does it play a lot like EQ2?

      Thanks

Hey I couldnt give a dman about the same recycled crap posted over and over again.  Show this game to a bloody proper respected gaming site and magazine.

whats a proper gaming site or Magazine?  The only magazine or websites that I know about that review games and post interviews are all sellouts.  More money = better scores.   Its native to think that any proper gaming site or magazine do fair reviews, all reviews are based on dollars sent to that site or magazine.

Get a grip and calm down.  im not talking about a review, im talking about showing their game to a gaming site like computerandvideogames.com or gamespot etc for a preview and nothing more.  If they cant even do that then this trully is just all made up shit tbh.

While I haven't been following the development of darkfall much I have to agree.  A preview on a major games site would have a huge impact.  As it stands now it's a bit like the weapons of mass destruction arguement.  "They have WMD's!!"  "Do you have proof" "No, but they have WMD'S!!" "How about just a little proof?" "THEY HAVE WMD's AND YOUR A TERRORIST IF YOU DONT AGREE!!!!".

Only problem with your argument is they did have WMD, we saw them used in the 80s vs Iran and early 90s vs the Kruds but again that doesnt count for all you bush haters. (I hate bush too but Iraq was right but handled wrong).

So they have to show you the game on a "proper" gaming site to make it real?  Why?  I dont want the same hype that Age of Crapness got.

The reason they need to show the game on a proper gaming site is that it would give their claims real credibility.  Anyone can put out a press release or post information on a web site, that does not make it true.  I can put out a press release to CNN and post on my website that I can fly, that proves nothing.  I invite CNN to my house and they videotape my flying around, that's another story.

In my original post I was referring to this growing illusion that Vanguard will be relaunced and become a mainstream MMO.  Like a phoenix rising out of the ashes and such.

Reality check:  The game has been out for two years, servers are down to four in number, and populations are sparse.

Grabs fanbois gently by the elbow and attempts to guide him out of ICU.  "She's gone.  Let her go.  She's gone.  We did all we can do."   A Vanguard CE box lies lifeless on a hospital bed, tubes running from its outer surface to EKG machines.

Monitor flatlines and alarm goes off.  Nurses rush in with crashcart as I escort the dazed fanbois out of the room and to a couch in the lobby.  Fanbois sits down in shock and mumbles, "But there's going to be a starter island.  Surely folks will come over from Conan.  Surely folks will come over."

It amazing how now days ANYONE that enjoys a game is a "fanboy".  Get over it dude.  You didn't like it, A lot of people didn't like it.  Some people do like it.  Why do you possibly care?  Let people enjoy their game.  You worse then those DB's that harass people that enjoy WoW.
