• From UO to AoC: The Devolution of the MMORPG
• Levels and classes are a huge restriction to creativity, possibilities in both PvE and PvP, and ultimately makes every cookie-cutter MMO the same thing. Something that is discussed more seldom is the necessity that these MMOs seem to have to base EVERYTHING around quests, instead of more open-ended material. I remember playing UO and never doing a single quest, yet being just as addicted (and more) as I get to these new MMOs. Yet another example that people need their hand held, a journal that tells them where to go and what to do.

Disturbingly enough, even with a journal that gives detailed descriptions of quest location and goals, in help channels there is a constant stream of "where 2 find boss who drops key to keep?" etc. Most times I bother to log into a general channel in an mmo, I lose a little hope in humanity. To cite an excellent quote from bash.org that sums it up well:

<+kritical> christin: you need to learn how to figure out stuff yourself..
<+Christin1> how do i do that

Ha.

Ha.

Ha.

If it begins at level 70, why doesn't everyone get level 70 from the start?

This was a petition for someone to make an mmo that develops the original concept of UO right? Instead of what we have today which is a brown sea of clones, and a few daring exceptions (<3 EVE).

At least the horizon has some interesting things to bring... too early to tell but Earthrise, Mortal Online and my favourite; Darkfall Online (shut up haters, the day will come!) are all looking back to the original days of UO for inspiration. My hope is that at least one of them succeeds in creating an experience like original UO.

Developers today want to create an experience that doesn't scare anyone off, and if they could financially motivate to send someone along with each game copy that holds your hand while you play, they would do it.

To the future, and what it brings!

• Thinking of trying LOTRO again
• Well.
Basically it's the whole reason for having deeds and traits and titles on top of your normal XP curve, so that you've got a lot of different levers to pull that all act together to create your pill. It's interesting - it's taken a while for traditional MMO players to get used to having that much choice.
UO has choice. LotRO is just a level/class grind.

Don't go back, just wait for something better to come out. I resubbed a while ago and regretted it almost as much as I regret buying the game.  Now I'm waiting for a good game to come out, where you can make your own builds and not stick to the ones the developers made. Darkfall Online and Earthrise are the only promising mmos I know of at the moment. Until they release, or something else comes along, I am sticking with other types of games.

Lord of the Rings Online
• Top 5 MMORPG's you would like to see
• I have a hard time coming up with five mmos that they wouldn't crap up totally by making it carebear, class/level-based etc.

I'd love to see some of these, but without following the cookie-cutter mmo shape of today. No particular order.

Conan the Barbarian MMO that doesn't cater to WoW fans. After reading Robert E. Howard's books about Conan, I find AoC lacking in many ways. I despise classes because of the restrictions they put on your character, and I despise levels because they seem to mean that you have to advance from being nothing to being some sort of demi-god. A proper, hard-core, skillbased system with PvP everywhere (but with guards and law enforcment in cities) and full loot would suit AoC so much better, because the world Howard describes is harsch and unforgiving.

Lord of the Rings Online, again without the WoW-factor. LotrO today is a disgrace, and once again the original books have been warped so far beyond recognition it makes a fan cry, and all in the name of commercialism. This is another setting that would cater greatly to a proper skillbased system, more open PvP and faction wars (i.e. players on both sides). I would have set it in an earlier age though, a lot easier to fit an mmo into the lore of the first war of the ring than during the events of the trilogy. Also, for some reason every mmo has to have fireballs and magic, even when it's based on a book where most folk couldn't use magic as advanced as that. I wouldn't mind not being able to play a fireballcasting mage, because the heroes of Tolkiens world are soldiers, rangers and simple men. They just had to cram it in there though.

A aliens/predator/colonial marines mmo could possibly be excellent. I would consider having the RPG bit to a minimum though. Probably make it more of an mmofps, but with some resource/promotion system for getting equipment, although a basic marine should get good enough equipment to be able to make a difference on the battlefield from day one. One thing that needs to change in some of these games is the grind to get to the end game. What about an mmo where the end game starts straight away? The AvP universe would cater excellently to that, since it's very much about action and suspense rather than killing lots of aliens to "collect 20 alien teeth" or somesuch. Missions could range from 3-5 man standard missions to ones that encompass a plutoon or more, heading deep into hostile territory. Naturally, you could play all three sides.

Darkfall Online - this is pretty much my dream MMORPG at the moment. When it comes out (and it will), I will be there and hopefully it will live up to my expectations (I've learnt over the years to not get hyped up about games until after I've actually tried them). It draws heavily from UO, which is still by far the best MMORPG I've played ever, bar none (and I've tried a few).

Something completely new and innovative that doesn't follow the structure of any mmo today. I am not sure exactly what it would be, but I'm sure there's someone out there with an excellent idea and no funding or talent to bring it to life (of course, for every one of these there are 100 people with appalling ideas without funding).
