If you have the opportunity, look up W.E.L.L. Online as from what I see is very promising. To me it seems to be the upgrade or sequel to Ryzom in terms of freedom and uniqueness, yet borrowing from the good in todays games.
More sandbox/skill based, less linear/level based.

Well Ryzom will be what you make of it. It is what most would consider a "sandbox MMO" leaving the choice up to you for what you want to do. Sometimes it can be quite overwhelming coming from Silan to the mainlands since there there is so much to do and explore. My advice to you to help this transition is to make some friends.
Getting into the groove of the mainland isn't nearly as daunting when you start joining up with others. Over time you will begin to get a better feel for how the mainland works (as well as more confident in your skills). At this point, you will want to start exploring for yourself and see what is truely capable in Atys.
As far as boredom goes, I can say that I have played for quite some time. I have yet to say I have been bored of what Ryzom offers. Between the various types of skills I can train, the dynamic world, and its outstanding community there is much to do. As a roleplayer I find myself socializing more with the community than anything else (though this is my choice).
If you need help once you reach the mainland, feel free to contact Souvec if you need some help. I'd be glad to help you learn the ropes.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't that like TCoS?
Don't worry, they said they will continue to add more open accounts as they go. Just keep your eyes peeled at Ryzom.com and keep trying.

I recently took a looong time to download the free trial version of DDO, and was psyched to try it out.
However, I could not have been more disappointed. My computer far exceeded the minimum requirements, FiOS connection, but the game was unplayably choppy.
Is this just a problem with the Trial Version? Or is it a very, very laggy game?
It's too late for me, as I'll never play it again (which is sad, as I am a long time Pen and Paper D&D player). But I'm curious if they were just a bit on the incompetent side of things over there.
I have quite an old computer and have been able to run it nearly on High Setting. Though there are times when I "lagout" and things see to get out of sync. But generally its was only a momentary thing, nothing that persisted for far to long.
I would also attribute alot of my latency to using wireless versus aa straight lan line.
