This is a pretty good discussion. I personally played a Magus most of the beta, but I'm switching to a healer since a friend will be playing a tank (Black Orc). I'm curious to know what you guys think of the Disciple of Khaine, and how they compare to the Shammie/Zealot?
I think DoK will do great paired with a Black Orc (probably even better than the other two). Actually, if my gf ends up getting it, I think we might go with that pair. Zealot + Black Orc feels a little too standard, shaman + black orc might run into issues with the shaman getting taken down too quick, but DoK + black orc means lots of survivability + reasonable damage. Really though, any of the combos would work.
While this game does focus on RvR, there really is an abundance of quests, and overall I kinda enjoyed myself questing even though I'm more of a PvPer. PQs are a lot of fun and if there is any focus put into some significantly more challenging PQs near end game, I could see guilds being made to focus on them (and instances, which I didn't get a chance to try out over PW). The worst part about PvE for me was the pathing issues - made it feel very broken and worthless, but they've said that the pathing will be fixed. All quest locations are shown on your map so it's not really built for the explorer as much as for players who want to read through and interact with the lore.
I think in the end, WoW is the place to be for a pure PvE player, and WAR will be the place for a pure PvP player. I think if you enjoy PvP more than PvE but still want to quest here and there, WAR does it great. If you're a 95% PvE player as you suggest, WAR should be a nice change from WoW if you've already seen and done all it has to offer (as I have, many times through). WAR PvE is solid but lacks the depth of polish WoW has, but really other than polish, I don't see how WoW is all that significantly better (except for the larger focus on instanced dungeons and raids).
The hardcore PvEer will get bored with WAR I think but the casual will eat it up.
This being said, I have no experience with middle or end game, so I'm just assuming they didn't completely forget about developing it as thoroughly as the beginning levels (see AoC).

Hmm you haven't defended a keep for a long period yet have you? That's probably the best RvR I've done and most renown I've earned.
I wasn't able to find a keep to defend (edit: i found keeps... just not ones that had an active battle) :( I mostly played scenarios while wandering around looking for open RvR stuff but really didn't find much. I got into 1 group one night and we fought maybe 8 other people over an hour while capturing towers. The scenarios alone made me decide to go ahead and buy on launch, but I think if there was a way to know where open RvR was actively happen, I would have gone there instead.
Actually that might be a good point. Anyone here play planetside? You could tell where the fights were by viewing the map and seeing mostly up to date hotspots of fighting. Maybe this would help with promoting open RvR. I know I would have done some if I knew where to go. If this system is already in place, I couldn't find it...
I don't know how this would affect WAR open RvR in general as I haven't experienced it much yet. Any thoughts?
I've been really enjoying the scenarios. I think they're my favorite part of the game. I love jumping on, joining the queue, doing some PvE or PQ while I wait, getting into the scenario, rinse repeat. My only complaint is that it takes so long for the scenarios to pop, particularly late night (when only 300-400 people were on the server). I love that you can join them anywhere... no going to town, joining, sitting there until it pops, wasting time...
I had a lot of fun capturing towers in world RvR as well. If world RvR was more crowded, I would have focused on that more instead of the scenarios, but I do enjoy both equally at the moment. I'm hoping end game world RvR is insane and makes me never want to join another scenario.
The combat is actually pretty fast. The slow feel comes from the fact that it takes longer to kill someone compared to WoW. By making the fights last longer, you're adding in more time to use a strategy, retreat to your team, etc. Don't expect to one shot anyone or be one shot. Don't expect to 5 shot anyone, etc. If there's 5 people on you and you're a squishy healer, you're going to go down quick. Other than that, the fights are lengthy. 1v1 in WAR isn't all that great but things speed up once you get into team vs team (RvR, whatever).
How many hours per day do you play MMORPGs?
