Alrighty let's have a little post mortem on the situation.

Firstly let's get the obvious stuff out of the way. Yesterday was in no way, shape or form a success. A lot of things went very wrong. Funnily enough however they didn't go wrong in the way most people thought they would or for the reasons that were being thrown around.

The website and our entire platform got hammered yesterday - which we expected. We knew how many open beta keys we'd given away and what sort of traffic to expect as a result. We got a lot more than we were expecting and yet the platform held up, the site slowed down (which was inevitable with the sheer volume of traffic, even a basic HTML page would have been slow under that onslaught) but everything stayed up. This is pretty much the big ray of sunshine that we took away, our datacentre took the onslaught and survived unscathed.

The account system broke. This wasn't down to the traffic (although that was a factor), nor the fact that the page was in Flash. There was a problem with our database server which didn't surface during testing. As you can read in the news, we have been working on this all night and we expect this to be resolved soon. Ultimately the system didn't work but we're glad we found the issue now in beta rather than before the headstart or live begins. Many of you criticised the decision to bring the account pages online the same day as the beta began but this was not the cause of the problems. While yesterday was a very painful day for us, there is a silver lining because it means that our headstart and live launch will be significantly more robust.

There was some miscommunication as well which falls entirely on us. The confusion over people with war-europe accounts not needing to create a new beta account was the main issue, other than that the team who were in the office yesterday worked very hard to keep you updated. Magnus and the other CMs who were working yesterday were in the office from 7:30am through to 3am this morning. During that time our teams were working on several different situations at once and the situation was often in a state of considerable flux. We had technical teams working on various solutions, management teams dealing with our partners and, for the most part, these people were busy fixing things rather than writing status reports that were likely to be out of date by the time they hit the CM team. Despite that, Magnus and the others posted what they had, when they had it both on the official news site and around the various fan forums.

Overall then, some things went right - not many to be sure and the important things certainly didn't. We made some mistakes, we expected many problems and we found some entirely different ones. We disappointed many of you by not letting you get into the open beta when we said you would and for that I am sorry. All of us are disappointed that we couldn't bring you the service you expected. I wasn't at work yesterday, Magnus was the man on the scene covering the situation, but I did keep a close eye on forums and was in contact with the guys in the office. A lot of what was said yesterday here and on other forums was entirely out of line. Of course you were disappointed and criticism is certainly warranted but frankly many of the posts made about the situation were borderline sociopathic. If having delayed access to a beta test really drives you to such depths of anger and fury then - and there is no polite way to put this - there is something wrong with you.

Today we have a lot of people at the office who are preparing to put in a long week after a long weekend to make things right. This isn't magically going to make yesterday alright but we are very much committed to making sure that you aren't disappointed again.

Wow... cool post from the English Community manager. So much action, so much drama. He first states that launching the account pages on the same day as open beta did not cause any problems with the open beta. lol

He then insults the player base by saying "there is something wrong with you". Common, sure even I got fed up with all the whine and name calling, but its not good when a community manager insults his potential playerbase. Many people just got in a rage after waiting days, weeks, months, years to play WAR. Many called GOA things in the heat of the moment, and to be honest GOA have much guilt in this with the bad communication that was shown yesterday.

There were practically no damage control or helpful communication during the whole day yesterday, when it finally got there it was much to late. The crowd got angry. And then the community manager goes out and say something stupid like this. Borderline sociopathic, lol! way to go Ian! You now how to treat your paying customers.

And then at last he insures us that we not gonna be dissapointed again. Oh yeah, the day after a epic failure(who we saw coming weeks ago) the whole playerbase gonna take him on his words, and dance around in a circle while holding hands and sing "Kumba ya my lord". www.youtube.com/watch

Well I cancelled my EU CE preorder after Ians post. I will wait a couple of months and see whats happening. If GOA doesnt shape up, I will go to the US servers. Maybe I will do that anyway. Sad about the CE stuff though. Oh well its only a damn game. I have more time to explore LotRO:Mines of Moria and play SPORE (I LOVE IT!) now anyway.

No I wont tell you about GOA. Because GOA is the videogames department of France Telecom’s “Content Division”, and benefits from six years experience in the management of massively multiplayer online role-playing games. Forerunner of this activity in Europe, its teams reconcile expertise with a passion for games and take advantage of France Telecom’s technical platform to offer the best of online games to European players. They also f**ked up the EU launch of WAR. Legendary. I wont tell you that. No way.

This is no indication of how Mythic will handle the game in the long run (by any measure). I'm not saying this in response to those who are simply venting about the wait for the sake of venting. This however is as normal to an MMO as ORCS are to fantasy.

I guess the only part I don't understand is why all the drama over long download, log in, or registration times. To my knowledge, this is still beta, and the goal of beta is to work these systems out under large amounts of stress. To the guys treating this like they are paying for the product, the point of beta is to work out these systems for those who will pay for the product. And don't give me the "I pre-ordered" speech, because, this is still a beta test, and not "early entry."

I have a key, I am downloading the client now (it's huge), and until it completes, I am playing something else, something I paid for...

lol... Beta testing their webpage, account system could have been done days, weeks, months ago. The Americans put in their beta codes months ago.  Why does GOA wait until the day OB starts to test it? Its like, "holy shit, we have been sitting here slacking for 6 months, since CE pre-order got their codes, we got to put up the systems in like a half week now".

Well I can agree with you that some peoples reaction are a little silly and over the top, but its not like GOA are without guilt in this. Could have been handled so much smoother.

Other then that I dont care so much for OB, I only hope they fix all messed up stuff until the head start and that the live launch goes smooth. If not I will get a little grumpy too. For now I can play Spore and calmly watch the riots on the diffrent WAR forums around the net.

    • war-europe is up now
    •  Source: www.warhammeralliance.com/forums/showpost.php

      "Good afternoon!

Today has been exciting to say the least! By now many closed beta testers have downloaded the new patch, while more and more new players are registering their accounts and validating their Open Beta keys. We are well aware of the numerous problems associated with the registration process. Most of these are due to the relentless pounding we’ve given the servers. As a reference, war-europe had two million (non-unique) hits between 8am this morning and noon. Flash or not, this is enough traffic to give most any website a run. This traffic was expected and a vital part of the Open Beta. Although it may have been a frustrating experience for many of you, we’ve gained lots of valuable data, further helping our preparations for the Live Launch.

We are expecting the Open Beta servers to be online soon(TM) and when they do, tens of thousands of closed beta testers are standing by the door, only to be followed by myriads of new testers who have managed to validate their keys.

      Some common issues

      * Open Beta key authentication error: Key has expired. This is caused by a communication problem with our databases. We are working on a solution. This error does not mean that your key is invalid.

      * Sometimes patching process will abort the download and one is forced to restart. This is caused by patching optimisation by our technicians. When they implement a change your connection may be severed. If this occurs you should restart the patching process; it will continue from the beginning of file you were last downloading.

      * There has been mixed messages regarding players who had previously created accounts at war-europe.com but who was never a part of the closed beta and hence not automatically given Open Beta access. I have previously stated that these players must create new accounts. This is not correct; anyone who has an account at war-europe.com but does not currently have Open Beta access is free enter their Open Beta key here: www.war-europe.com/#/myproductkey/. We will clarify this in the news shortly.

We are all working very hard and appreciate your patience. Frustration is understandable, but please remember that every single one of you are beta testers. The primary purpose of this day is to test our systems in preparation for live launch. Despite some delays and technical issues, Open Beta is drawing closer and you will soon be bathing in the blood of your enemies!

Oh, and for those of you who haven’t finished patching yet, the English servers are: Karag Dron, Karag Orrud, Nehekhara, Karak-Hirn, Karak-Norn, Alarille, Burlok and Ellyrioon. They are all on the Core ruleset for now. We’ll try to bring you Open-RvR servers during Open Beta but for now we have no ETA on this.

We are well aware of your frustration and apologise for any unnecessary inconvenience. The Open Beta servers will open soon and WAR will be upon Europe.

      -Magnus
