Is it complexity of the game?
Up to a point, EvE online for example is complex to begin with, but over time should be less so.
The learning curve?
Yes, again as the 2 games you mention are linear the learning curve is more of a series of straight lines. If you were to plot a graph of relative difficulty vs. level. then you will get a spike at 50 if you are new to the game as you progress into dungeon content.
The amount of time to get to endgame?
Time doesn't equate to difficulty in the same way as a game with fixed rules such as chess, as you can get an expansion that adds 10 levels or a patch which nerfs or buffs characters/classes. There is a certain element of luck too, would a player who found lots of epics find the game easier than someone who finds none? I'd said definitely
Does PvP make a game more difficult than just PvM? It adds another dimension to a game, I would say yes because a PvE encounter is always the same a PvP encounter is 99.9999% of the time different.
Do you think that the average age of the players allows conclusions on the difficulty? No.

I had to laugh it this, I'm old enough to remember when games all had 3D at the end of their title. It also reminds me when everyone was going on about virtual reality and those goofy looking goggles you had to wear. Also just my opinion, but the 'peak' of mmorpg has been hit with World of Warcraft, not so much the game itself but the aggressive marketing. My prediction of online rpgs is a game like Oblivion which is played 90% offline, but the additional 10% would be "raid" zones with another group of players. Best of all it could and should be free. Think about it, 90% of world of warcraft is soloable (what i call offonline gaming).
I like deewe's points too especially
I don't understand why more random stuff doesn't happen, random = fun and must be fairly easy to do even if the randomness has a negative effect on your character. (correct me if I'm wrong but even Asheron's Call had this).
I know that there is no such that fulfills ALL the above and some of it is probably contradictory, but I can dream :)
No need to over analyse this it is very simple.
In the case of MMO's there is no correlation between one that is popular and one "being the best". Popularity can be measured by number of subscribers, "being the best" is highly subjective. As is the case with most forms of entertainment or media (hence the references to Britney Spears etc, although no-one seems to go that extra mile to explain they just spout "McDonalds" like some brainwashed zombie in a bad 70's B-movie.
Over 2 billion Christians out there, does that make Christianity the best?
The game list on this site is never more than a guide, if you only like Historical MMO's or ones based in space, over half the list won't apply to you. Not everyone who plays MMO's has heard of this site, although most have not everyone has registered on this site. They may be put off by the garish adverts or they may not be literate enough in English to use this site (although most of the registered members get by :P).
