Latest Blog Entry - Joys of torpedo whoring
From my blog 3d6 pwns d20 [markoraos]

Just wanted to reveal to the world that I just upgraded my O-type destroyer into a Q-type..

For those who aren't in the know that means I just got myself a second torpedo rack... combined with those nifty high-rpm 2-barrel 4" guns my little terror of the seas just got a bit more terrific. Man, nothing beats seeing those two torpedo salvos connect whilst speeding away at 48knots from those heavies and their big guns...

I got no armor but I just built in the most powerful diesel around (44000 hp on a destroyer, lol!) and the crew is da best guyz there is.

Anywayz, Navy Field is where its at... at this particular moment in time. Extremely fun bit of casual heavy metal / high explosive mayhem.

When I finally get to installing and checking out Saga I'll drop by to share the first tear-jerking moment from that particular freebie.

Casual reviews of free casual MMOs... till WAR finally goes gold. Cya!

    • About MMO addiction...

IMO it's very much down to the way the game is configured. WoW, for example, is horrible in this regard. You have to waste inordinate amounts of time in order to be eligible for some fun. Grind, grind, grind... grind this, grind that so you can maybe, in the future, go to a dungeon you haven't seen yet or compete in PvP.

I consider WoW a horrible game due to these simple metrics - the proportion of time you're actually having fun to the total time played. Most people "waisting their lives" on WoW are actually not having fun - they are all slaving away hoping to get the chance of actually having fun occasionally.

Case in point: I play COD4 and QW as well. In these games your fun/time-played ratio is close to 100% so I don't feel any need to play more than an hour at a stretch. I get my dose of fun and then I find something else to do. While I was playing WoW I discovered that its "fun ratio" is miserable - I'd say 20%. For each hour actually doing something meaningful I'd have to spend 4 hours trying to get the group together, grindi some mats, fly around, grind, grind.... I'd be working for hours and hours on a promise of entertainment. If I just got my entertainment straight up I'd probably waste much less time than I did. That's a dastardly, dope-dealer customer retention strategy Blizzard got there and I really passionately despise them for it cause I'm pretty sure its intentional.

They don't care about you having having fun, they just want you hooked. Just like a drug dealer schtick - stringing you along with promises of paradise but actually just trying to keep you in hell for as long as possible.

One of the prime reasons why I'm so excited about WAR is that it seems it'll offer a much better fun/time-played ratio than what is the norm in MMOs so far. I expect to be able to log in, see who's online and in just a few minutes be somewhere doing something meaningful and entertaining.

This isn't surprising since the Empire from Warhammer is almost completely based on The Holy Roman Empire (basically Germany) from the reformation wars in 16-hundreds... which is  incidentally the time and space Solomon Kane operates in.

      Cheers!

Although the Holy Roman Empire was Catholic so i guess the Witch Hunter is more based on Catholic Inquisitors. The Van Helsing comparison is good, they look very similar.

      Well... yeah and no..

Warhammer IP is a mishmash of all kinds of cultural and historical references. Though Empire is very catholic-like, witchhunters are definitely modeled on protestant fanatics which operated individually in those days completely unlike the Inquisition which was an incredibly bureocratic and ponderous organization. Inquisitors wore priestly habits and cowls rather than buckled leather pointy hats and long hair underneath...

As for Van Helsing... I suppose you're referring to the movie? Imo it should have been called "Solomon Kane" because that's what it is. The original Van Helsing is a crusty old professor with a weird sense of humor... though you can forgive Alan Moore absolutely anything, being a fantastic writer that he is.

Could be... but approximately 3/4 of the people that I know who play WoW will buy WAR. I cannot vouch for the whole WoW population but that's the situation "on the ground" from my perspective.

Of the same population close to me about 1/2 say they'll get WoTLK to see what's it about, but the other half start foaming at the mouth at very the mention of it, regardless whether they're into WAR or not.
