Lets see, First we have LMMORPG (Linear Massive Multiplayer Online Role playing game) = WoW, Lotro, Eq2, War.

Then SMMORPG (sandbox Massive Multiplayer Online Role playing Game) = Eve, Ryzom, UO, Swg, Wurm

Who knows maybe over time it will stick.

I'd support that, although I've always thought we could do with a better name than "sandbox".  Something more marketable, with a more specific definition, like "virtual world" or "social simulation".  Although technically, Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game describes our type of game more than the other.

I think it would help a great deal to draw a distinction between the two game types.  Maybe we can even petition the mods here to make dedicated forums for the general discussion of each.  It would keep us all out of each other's way, anyways.

I have one for the linear since todays more popular MMOs seem like a Single player Rpg or adventure with a chat box.

LMMOAG = Linear Massive multiplayer Online Adventure game or just MMOAG would be ok if players didn't like the sound of linear.

I'm quite certain that Darkfall is vaporware, but I do agree that it's currently the most-wanted, as it is the only sandbox, skill-based game currently in (alleged) production.

      Maybe

Games like Earthrise, fallen earth and mortal online look interesting.

I posted a thread not too long ago posing these very same questions, and I was quite surprised how the majority of people did want sandbox games.  The few answers I got to the question of why players don't want it were mostly based on misconceptions, like that snadbox games take more time or skill to play, with very few being against the core idea.

I don't think we've really had a game that fully explores the concept, but the ones that came close were plenty popular in their day.  UO, despite all the issues at launch still today retains a cult following after all these years.  SWG was extremely buggy and often unbalanced, yet pre-CU it was much more popular than post-NGE.  As others have pointed out, Eve has more subscriptions than the vast majority of linear mmorpgs.

I think Raithe-Nor's observations in the thread I refered to were really spot on.  We essentially have different populations wanting completely different genres.  What do you think of the idea that we should have our own site (with blackjack and hookers)?

Also, like you already pointed out, there is Saga of Ryzom and EVE. Why are they a dying breed? EVE has more subs then many linear MMOs please look at mmorpg charts. Granted, it's not WoW numbers but its good

There is no reason to leave the site for the reasons you gave.

Please tell me, How are all those games going to survive with the majority of the community wanting WoW type instant gradification MMOs?

How can any unique mmo survive in this stage of "I have a real life so i can't use brain cells in games anymore" mmos?

Bro there are currently two games out that at least try to give the player base freedom Ryzom and Eve.

I played Eve and Ryzom both games are freaking awesome, these are niche games with small communities that are helpful (most of the time). the freedom in these games are amazing unlimited possibilities yet the majority of the MMO community don't bother playing these games.

They flock to WoW a basic feature, gear progression, limited world, unbalanced pvp, linear character progression mmo.

Unless Eve dumbs down its gameplay, takes away ffa pvp and turns the combat into starfox these people won't play it.

Unless Ryzom adds a ton of hand holding quests, makes its mobs retarded easy and ups the graphics to EQ2/WAR level and adds shiny loots to mobs these players will never play it.

      It's a shame really.

Where the hell did all the players go that wanted a large immersive game world? one that was effected by our actions? where are the players that wanted real risk in pvp? Where are the players that want unlimited customization when building that dream class? Where are the players that want a player driven economy that want to craft Items that are actually usable at endgame level, whatever that means.

Where are our roleplayers? Where are the players that used to spend five plus years building friendships, questing in hunting parties, truely having an adventure?

All these people want are dumbed down games that give rewards for every little thing. They all want to solo 100% of the time like MMO's are single player games with a chat box.

These people are who the new mmo companies are targetting for thier next projects.

Think about that for a second

      It freaking blows my mind.

Uh, I think they'll survive just fine.  It may be true that people who like that kind of game are in the minority, but you don't need to be in the majority to pay a monthly fee to support a game.

I do hear your frustration though.  I wish there were more games with features like that, but in the mean time there are plenty of people who support this type of gameplay.

Right now sandbox community is small and split between a handful of games.

Eve, ryzom, Wurm, UO and thenwe have the SWG vets that don't play anything cause Swg was epic.

You listed what Five new Sandox mmo's that are targeted toward 1 million+  players.

If not enough people play a game it dies am I wrong?

The MMO community as a whole should want MMO's with more features, they should want a MMO with freedom, They should want a game world that feels alive..... shouldn't they?

Are all these players that play WoW happy just waiting in front of an instance portal or for a pvp que all day? Are they happy with a world that doesn't change? that is freaking meaningless? Are they happy with a mostly Anti-social community?

Go to a WOW RP server all they do is poke fun at the real RPers that struggle to actually enjoy the lore and game world, is this the type of player that should be targeted for the majority of new MMOs?

Edit: sorry that turned into a rant... it may be harder than I thought to quite this site.....

I don't know which post you're responding too but I can answer you.

Eve has no skill cap, actually there isn't one person that has every skill yet and the game is five years old.

Ryzom has no skill cap, actually there isn't one person that has every skill and the game is four years old.

By your post I can see you want the current state of mmo's to change.

I just wanted to answer the question :)
