    • Have Developers gotten lazy?

    • It's definitely not laziness. I know World of Warcraft is overcited as being the root of all evil, I'm going to have to say that the problem is, indeed, World of Warcraft. Not because of any aspect of the game itself, but purely because it raised the stakes so high, that no company could afford not to copy it. I truly think that World of Warcraft and most of the mainstream titles that have followed it, or immediately proceeded it, form the second generation of this genre. There is no third, yet, but there will be, when, as ironore says, the market for World of Warcraft games crashes. Before the explosion of the genre, there was less money at stake. Now, it's impossible not to shoot for that market, because the rewards could be astronomical. It's ironic that all the titles that try are pretty much doomed to fail though, whereas the others that try to live outside that market, EVE Online for example, succeed quite nicely.
