I think the big reason they have not reverted all the way back is they want to make this change and evaluate the impact.
Before this change a lot of the named bosses where camped by higher level toons farming the drops. This was either to twink out an alt or make a big profit on the brokerage. Supposedly this was one of the way gold farmers farmed.
If I am in a dungeon with my lvl 17 alt and I finally make my way to the boss only to find a lvl 50 logging in and killing the boss and scooping up the loot, then logging out it kind of pisses me off.
I can understand that people want to do some legitimate farming of their own, but there has to be some kind of compromise. I have seen this problem in other games and I dont know if anyone has come up with a solution.

Yup Vanguard is not a console slasher game, so it won't appeal to the mass market (thank god)
It wont appeal to the mass market because the game just isn't good and its ugly as hell with it's poor art direction. Any game can be popular like Ninja Gaiden is a very very hard game and yet it still sells well. It's not that Vanguard is too hard or it's sooo much more elite than popular mmorpgs, because that's more of a play style but it's just because the game isn't good.
WOW can be sooo much harder than most mmorpgs with it's PVP because you're fighting other players and that's sooo much harder than fighting PVE in PVE only mmorpgs. Also if you want to get to top ranks and get all the best gear in the game then that requires constant play because the game is constantly changing and adding better items.
For me Vanguard is just a poor empty mmorpg with hardly anyone playing, the art style makes me wanna throw up and the character model and animations are some of the worst I've ever seen, specially for a new mmorpg. The standard of the game is subpar and SOE have proved that they just arn't going to put the resources into the game.
JustBe.. you have never actually played the game:

Wouldn't play that game for free, I got 60 days free and the new expension for free on EQ2 and played 5 mins and realised why I didn't like the game again. As soon as I download Vanguard again I'll see the character models and quit so nah.........
There are crafting quests which you can gain equipment/clothes and XP, but the big grind is through the work orders.
It is possible to have a character that is just a crafter. On a PvP server there are people that dont go above lvl 7, becuase they can not be killed and robbed of their possesions. The biggest difficulty I see is that you can not gather resources for your crafting unless you gain adventuring skills. The higer lvl recources are found in the high level difficult areas. If you are successful crafter and making coin, then you can just buy the resources you need.
The games difficulty depends on your situation. If you have a group of friends that you can regularly group with then this game will seem easy. If you have to rely on pick up groups (PUG) or you have to solo then I think the game is difficult. It also depends upon how close to the edge you get on the mobs you encounter. If you can be satisfied with soloing the same level 2-3 dot mobs, then the game wont be too hard. If you try to go after mobs that are 2-3 level higher than you, try to complete group quests, or try to poke around dungeons alone, then yes the game can be very difficult. I guess this is true of most MMORPG.
What I thought was interesting was Silius's second cryptic statement; That he was not going to be the one that created the portal between Norrath and Telon. Kind of sounded like it was going to be something put in on the EQ side.

LOL this is the best thread Ive seen in along time. Man this thread delivers lol. I really hope you are all joking around and no one actually believes Silius is making a portal between VG and eq1 lol.
Malagar is right I won't be the one making it.

Wow... let me know when that game you describe comes out. I am afraid it might be a while.
In the mean time I will play what I think is the best MMO on the market right now.
Which console would you like to see MMOs released for?
