Don't get too hyped. Just remember it's a game. And a super buggy mmo at that :) But it's a very decent game, possibly even good, which is what the industry needs right now. I just hope it lasts.
Humans are violent by nature, as are most creatures on this earth. Our civilization has developed to the point where violence is not necessary for us to function, whereas it used to be. Some violence is still necessary, but only by a limited amount of the population. Thus, our violent desires go mostly unfulfilled. That's why so much of our media is violent, because there is no other outlet us civilized people. Perhaps one day we will be able to curb the desire, and not just the actions, but I doubt it.
More on topic, I really don't have a lot of hope for this game at this point. The idea of a cops and robbers game sounds good, but there are so many ways it can go wrong. We'll have to see how it plays out.
I wouldn't mind seeing companies let you buy the cd's if you don't want to wait for the download. The real problem is that all of the assets are required at once, instead of streaming them. I would like to see games use more streaming technology so you don't need to download everything before you start playing. There are indie or low-tech games that do this, but the big boys can't handle it. Of course, the file sizes these days are insane as well. Developers don't care about keeping the sizes down, because nothing is forcing them too.
I always like seeing what demo hackers can accomplish with a couple free killobytes lying around, and wonder at the 18 gigs of game we are seeing in the latest games. I bet 1 gig is just for stupid cutscenes that barely add anything to the experience... But can you play without downloading the cutscenes? NOoooOooo.
The fallacy in playing something for what it might become, is why not play something fun while you wait? If what you see potential in will become fun someday, you might as well wait until then to play it :) Now if you think you can help it get there, that's different. Beta testing and the like, where you actually have a lot of say in what happens (well, at least you should have a lot of say) is where you can help shape the game into that potential you think you see. Playing a live mmo, sometimes you feel like you can help it get there also.
Also, if something is fun enough, even if the potential is the main draw, why not keep playing, eh? But if something is just trash, and you see potential, but it is not very likely to reach it, and there's nothing you can do to help it get there, then you are just punishing yourself for no reason.

Overall I think Cryptic is doing the best they can given that they do not want to reinvent the wheel. They have the engine which gives them the power to plug in scenarios and such. If they went the Bridge Commander route with player roles on a player ship, it will be much tougher to develop.
Watching the video at least it won't be a glorified Earth and Beyond. So I will watch and learn more as the game develops
You hit the nail on the head. They are doing the best they can at being lazy and uncreative :( If I were running their business, who knows, it's likely I would have went the same route. Being creative is too risky in this industry these days. But I can't help but feel this is a totally wasted opportunity at something that had potential to be revolutionary.
The emphasis on fleet battles feels like the opposite of what the franchise is about, while other aspects of the game sound pretty close to the direction I would go. At this point though, it sounds too much like "you are a ship" with some instances on the side. Will wait to see how it develops to know whether I like the game or not, but I think it could have been better.
On the plus side, at least my dream mmo idea is not stolen anymore. I was worried for a while :)
