I've expressed my views on this for awhile now, so i'll just keep it short this time.
I think Turbine should've opened up all the famous places that are known, like rohan, gondor, mordor, etc.... instead of restricting us to eriador only. I can understand why they restricted us though, they wanted us to go through the story in a linear fashion.
You have to remember The Original "Middle Earth Online" had 16 classes and you could write books in game of your ventures.
Alot has changed friend.
LOTRO and MEO are two different games, sadly LOTRO is what went live.

Agreed. An sandbox Middle-earth set in the Fourth Age would have been amazing and probably even more ambitious than LotRO. That said, I'm still quite happy with the game.
They're planning on one "full" expansion per year so if this next one is Eregion/Moria/Lorien then we can assume the next will be Rohan/Isengard/Helmsdeep and hopefully the next will be Gondor/Pelennor/Osgiliath and then finally Mordor. Mordor would be really cool because it will take place after the Battle at Morannon so basically Mordor will be wide open with Orcs and Trolls confused after the fall of Sauron.
If that's the case then we're looking at 2011.
It's fun to think about but a long ways away.

I've played a shitton of MMOGs and they're all pretty much the same. What has impressed me thus far about LotRO is that it's simply enjoyable to play. I never really feel like I'm striving to get my character to a certain level so that I can go do this or that and the game is rarely tedious. When I start to feel like I'm grinding I stop and chat with folks, play a son, or go play a different class. Shortly thereafter I'm reminded that this is a game to be savored and not hacked through. It will have a very familiar feel to WoW and some aspects are admittedly samey, but realize that it's just the packaging.
If you do like to just barge your way through these games there are plenty of tasks for you to do but it would be easy to burn out. Instead, follow the story and stay along for the ride. The xp and lewt come effortlessly, just enjoy being in Middle-earth. Who knows, it might inspire you to try the books again.
Yes, do yourself a favor and read the greatest fantasies written in the English language. At first I had a few gripes with the way Turbine handled some of the lore (loremasters especially) but as I've played through the game, and I'm only level 22, I'm seeing they did a fairly brilliant job incorporating all of the "gray areas" left by Tolkien.
If you're a terrible nerd like me and have found yourself wondering, "What did this part of the Shire look like or what's it like on this side of the river" then you have the opportunity to explore that in this game.
Gah! I have to stop reading these threads! My computer is down and I won't be able to get a new one (and thusly play LotRO) for at least another week! The torment!!
