If WAR isn't WOW, then why do I feel like I'm playing WoW with a bit more focus on pvp and a quarter the content of everything else?
I like WAR and play it often, but I don't delude myself by thinking this game is superior to wow. If it wasn't for the pvp focus, it wouldn't be more then a cheap knockoff.
I have leveled in so many linear mmos now that I frankly have next to no interest in leveling anymore. Like the OP said, we all know by now that max level is where the game really starts. Kyleran mentioned that the journey is part of the game and that we should enjoy our journey. I actually quite agree, but the problem is that how many mmos actually make the leveling process a fun journey anymore? It's all about go kill 10 boars or find the hidden book of epic 20-hour crappy story arc. The point here is that there's NO STORY in mmos. Why is it so hard to make an epic story-line ala Diablo 2, and then allow players to be close to max level and start the end-game?
It's tough to put into words how I feel that leveling would work best in a game, and each time I have to level I become more and more a fan of skill-based games, where there simply are no levels and your grind is in becoming the specific class you want to be. When I look at SWG (pre-cu skill-based), I think there is more that you can add to skills, such as achievements or even "leveling" of some sort in regards to character stat advancement. Naturally, I couldn't leve Eve out of the equation either, as they use a unique skill-based system that although is not perfect is regardless a breath of fresh air from another level-based game.
One would say that with wow still topping the charts in terms of subscribers that too many people love to level. Nonetheless, I think there are a lot of players completely new to mmos that play wow. How long until they bore of leveling in future games? Might perhaps the concept of leveling for the sake of leveling be outdated and on its way to obsolescence? If you would have asked me about this years ago, I would have told you you were a fool for believing that leveling was an obsolete gaming concept. Now, I just don't know...
Naturally, I agree entirely, as SWG's main failure was the lack of themepark elements and end-game content (no, I'm not talking raids). But how can you give wow the "large open, seemless world" nod when it's roughly a tenth of the size of SWG? I always felt a bit claustrophobic in wow...

How about the "it's too early to judge" option?
